Christina and other white girls who people think can sing have a throaty, strained sound that I hate.  I can't pinpoint who started it, but I think it was Christina and the other pop girls in the late 90's/early 2000s.   :uhh:

Earlier white weren't singing like that.

The others you mentioned are exceptions.  Kelly Clark' and others, too.  Not all do it, but it became pretty common.
