Aaliyah wasn't on Jive during this time, she left Jive after the R. Kelly shit and was at Atlantic during the OIAM era

I think Background lost their Jive partnership because of that. Atlantic was like the only big label that took the risk but Aaliyah then had to do a lot on their own. I don't think Background was big enough or had big blockbuster singles in the budget so that's maybe why their singles was released that way.

It's crazy how this didn't perform well but is a huge r&b staple
So unforgettable and timeless

Changed r&b forever
It was a big hit. Just never sold and released for a single. They wanted people to buy the album so it didn't chart because at the time billboard only allowed songs that were released as singles to chart on Hot 100.

These are the things that don't get annotated in history and doesn't translate over time.

Same with Are You That Somebody except that wasn't even on a fkn album.

That's true about the Jive label thing. She was on a different big label for each album. But back then this was a tactic still utilized for majority of the industry and especially for the acts they wanted to move albums.

She was so much better than them.

She SERVED in her 7 years but so many things stifled her.

!!!!!!!

It's crazy to think how only If Your Girl Only Knew & The One I Gave My Heart To was the only Hot 100 successes off of that OIAM album...

Wow I really think Barry killed my sister

Chileeeee I wouldn't put it past him... heard a lot of money was invested into making that 3rd album and the goals Virgin had for it too after the success of Romeo Must Die/Try Again, only for WNAR to flop smh

The way that era played out after they dropped WNAR is so weird to me still

I doubt that. Black ground wasn't paying Static and those other boys nothing. They pretty much did it for free. That's why Missy and Timberland didn't want to come back.

That still didn't mean kill the damn girl. It had to be something else or people jump from A to z when they say this.

That was money where they was somewhat saving at but I'm sure they gave Static & Black a decent check... Also, them studio sessions and housing in Australia for her creative team while she was filming Queen ain't pay for themselves... that marketing and music video budgets weren't cheap either... Li made Dave Meyers go over budget for the MTAW video shoot in LA in order to achieve the concept... money was put out and they wasn't seeing the success back w/ the singles released... I'm sure there was a lot of behind the scenes mess we unaware of

Harlem

To be clear, not saying Barry killed her but how the way it all played out it's still weird or just a bad coincidence
