Band-Aid launching racially diverse bandages




After years of petitions, Band-Aid will now launch a new line of bandages in a range of different skin tone colors — from beige to dark brown — to  "embrace the beauty of diverse skin," the firm announced Thursday.

The bandage brand, which is owned by Johnson & Johnson, said it plans to roll out the new product in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement amid protests against racial injustice and the death of George Floyd.

For years, advocates have petitioned the brand to produce a broad range of skin tones.

The company didn't say when the new Band-Aids would hit the shelves. In 2018, the multi-tone bandage company Tru-Colour, which celebrates different racial identities, made its way into Target stores nationwide.

And this isn't weird or extra or anything of the sort. This was one of the most basic displays of white privilege. There were many times in my life where I had to use a bandaid and wondered why did it have to stand out so much? Why couldn't it blend and be conspicuous? It looked silly and there was no option for my black ass. Growing up I never realized it was "flesh toned" for white people.
