Andrew Jackson Foundation CEO says removal of portrait from Oval Office 'disappointing'NASHVILLE, Tenn.--The President & CEO of the Andrew Jackson Foundation says the removal of an Andrew Jackson portrait from the Oval Office by President Joe Biden is "disappointing but no surprising."
On Thursday, the Associated Press and other media outlets reported President Biden removed a portrait of the Tennessean who served as America's 7th president. Jackson's Indian Removal Act of 1830 and his slave laborers have been a source of contention amid the national movement for social justice.
FOX 17 News Nashville contacted the Andrew Jackson Foundation for comment, CEO Howard J. Kittell issued the following statement in response:
The news that President Biden has removed the portrait of our 7th President Andrew Jackson from the Oval Office is disappointing but not surprising. In recent years as our nation's social values have shifted and historians and the media made more critical evaluations of our historic figures, opinions about Jackson have become quite unfavorable. We do need to look at him objectively, considering both his flaws and his strengths. Jackson was a consequential American president and a complex human being of his time.https://fox17.com/news/local/andrew-jackson-foundation-ceo-says-removal-of-portrait-from-oval-office-disappointing-white-house-president-joe-biden-social-justice-tennessee-politics-us-news
