Title: Gorls on here who are doing AncestryDNA...
Post by: Herb. on April 10, 2016, 04:13:45 PM
CONTACT YOUR COUSIN MATCHES.

I just got off the phone with my one of my maternal relatives that matched me thru DNA. He confirmed EVERYTHING that I guessed about my grandmother's heritage. Well, almost. She isn't of "Creole" ancestry, but of Melungeon ancestry, which is pretty much the same thing, a mix of French/Spanish, African and Native. But their roots are in North Carolina/VA, where most of my family is from, instead of Louisiana.

http://www.frenchcreoles.com/CreoleCulture/freepeopleofcolor/The%20Melungeons.html

I KNEW just by looking at my great great grandmother (in my sig), the fact that she appeared to be free and well off, and the significant levels of Spanish/Portuguese/Native ancestry (at 10%) in my own DNA , and my grandmother's DNA strain returning as "Dominican", that Creole or Melungeon was a strong possibility. HOWEVER, I honestly didn't find a lot of paper trail evidence to confirm that.

But I was looking at and researching the WRONG LINE of my family. I assumed that the heritage came from the "DeBerry" line of my family, but it actually comes from the "Lilly" line, who were related to the Dumas.

:receipts:

We matched relatives with one another, he confirmed the areas, the names, he also gave me names to check that were related to the Melungeon Dumas/Lilly family to see if there was a match in my DNA list. Every name he gave me popped up as a fucking match!!!!!!!!!!!

I finally got my fucking answers!!!! I was RIGHT. Well, almost. But I was definitely on the right track. I finally know who she was.  :loose2when:
And I finally really know who my grandmother is. And who her father was.  :loose2when:

I finally know her story!!!!!!

Get your money's worth. Don't just look at the percentages. Contact your matches and dig in. They're just as excited as you are to mess a bit. Make every penny count!!!!

It gives you percentages that estimate what your heritage is.
It's pretty spot on.

The cousin matches are flawless.

But honestly contact the cousin matches, and gathering DOCUMENTATION, that paper trail is everything to me. I really feel like I got my money's worth now. Up until now I was trying to research my mom's side on my own. And making very educated guesses.

But there could be a cousin that has more experience and time invested than you do. That's who I spoke with today. And I finally got what the fuck I've been looking for.  :plzstop:

Still good to know that I tried on my own though. And that I was making good guesses. :justabit: I kinda slay

Would that mean siblings get identical results?
Yes, kinda.
But you have to be careful.

Originally looking at Ancestry DNA results
it was like a sprinkle of Iberian Peninsula here, a sprinkle of Ireland there, "West Europe" here....it just seemed like it was spread out everywhere with a whole bunch of random European ancestors or something.

I assumed it was some slavery rape mess and kept it moving. :plzstop: :plzstop:
I was never gun ho about DIVING into the European portion.

But once I got into GEDMatch, I saw how it clustered "Iberian" (Spain/Portugal) into 7%, then followed by MesoAmerican at 2%, North Africa at 3% .... I was Like wait, these are similar to results that Dominicans and Puerto Ricans get  when they take these tests (in larger amounts for them of course).

It wasn't until yesterday when Theo dived into GEDMatch and it PERFECTLY matched his grandparents heritage ( http://brandy.4fans.net/index.php?topic=14879.msg418808#msg418808 ) that I felt confident that there was something to the "Dominican" result i kept getting for one of my grandparents (which I knew was my grandmother for sure.)

That's what made me reach out to my cousin match (who was trying to get @ me for a minute but I kept ignoring them) to get things popping today. I think I overlooked it because I just didn't expect Hispanic heritage to be a significant part of my makeup. But it is :uhh:

My grandmother's father was of Melungeon descent.

Siblings will get SIMILAR results but they won't get exactly the same.
So just because one sibling gets 12% Irish 35% Nigerian , their full blooded sibling shouldn't expect to get it the same. The sibling may get 13% Scandinavian 32% GHana. But this is where research, common sense and documentation would need to combine to form a logical explanation.

Many areas overlap one another. People in the Iberian Peninsula often return Irish results, etc. KNowing history and geography is definitely an advantage.

It makes sense of so much.

I know my great grandfather was not "white", but on documents I found he's listed as a white man.
My grandmother said he was very fair skinned with curly hair.

A lot of Hispanics can easily slip under the radar and pass for white if they wanted to. He was passing.

The coolest thing about this is that I didn't even know who Melungeons were before I began this journey. I actually like that it's not something I never knew about, or a group of people I never heard about rather. It's not a race but simply a way for them to simplify their multicultural heritage. And every single line of it, African (duh), Spain, France and Native are perched in every DNA kit I have.

I finally cracked this shit. Like REALLY cracked it. :plzstop: I had my guesses, for the most part I had already figured it out. But documentation makes me comfortable really CLAIMING it.

I really have to thank Theo. Just seeing how accurate his GEDMatch mess was, it gave me hope that there was something more for me to explore. Or something to confirm. This is the beauty of it all....I help you guys, you help me.

Honestly I never took interest in genealogy until I perched here in the SOuth for a while.

In NYC we could careless who's what, everyone's something.

But down here where it's more simple..more Black and White ... literally. If they see someone out of line with the "ordinary" they will single you out quick. And start asking questions  :uhh: "How do you get your hair like that? :uhh: "

My sister was puzzled as well as to why I suddenly got so interested in knowing my family history. But It's only so many times that you're questioned..... accused of perming your hair and mess that you begin to ask what's going on for yourself.

My grandmother never sat around and talked about her heritage. So this is why I was like  :uhh: :uhh: when people would ask if I was Haitian (two people on here asked me that), or say I looked Dominican, or whatever. But it all makes sense now.

The Dumas family has ancestral roots in Saint Dominigue, which is now Haiti/DR. I got my answers and I cannot tell you how good it feels to really know who I am. And who my grandmother is. :stressed:

My dad's family pretty much knows where they're from. Proud descendants of slaves. I tried to see if there was any story there but when I went back a couple generations, it stopped. Which is to be expected of a strictly African American family. Once you hit 1860 or so the trail stops. Unless you wanna learn the history of their slave masters. And I'm good on that :udontlookok:

There's no romantic stories on his side. But I am damn proud of them.

I love bragging about my father's grandfather though. :plzstop: :justabit: Everytime I go down to dad I'm kissing the land my strong Black great grandfather worked for and owned. They may not have glitz and glam, and ooh's and ahh's when it comes to their genealogy. but I get my heart from my father's side without a doubt.

Honestly, I was beginning to lose just a BIT of faith in the DNA tests.

But the more I read, the more I am amazed.
I am a descendant of the Dumas family, and when I searched the name I discovered many of them were directly from Saint Domingue (which is now the Dominican Republic.)

QuoteCommon names of Free People of Color:

Many came from St. Domingue in the West Indies:

Aleman, Allegre, Amothe/Lamothe, Bachemin, Bagneris, Baillie/Billie, Bajoliere, Baudin, Beaulieau, Beaumond(t), Beaureparie, Bedeau, Bellaire, Bellevue, Beltremieux, Benoit, Bernoudy, Berque, Bertonneau, Bic/Blique, Boise, Bon/Bonne, Bondaille, Boni, Bonseigneur, Boutine, Boutte, Boyer, Cabaret, Cambray, canelle, Caraby, Caresse, Cavalier, Cazenave, Chaigneau,

Chretien, Colvis/Clovis, Cornier, Courcelle, Cournand, Couvertier, Croque/Crocker, Cupidon, Dalcour, Dapremont, Daquin, Darcantel, Decourmant, Decuir, Dede/Dedaio, Dege, Dejan, Delatte, Delille, Deruisseau, Desdunes, Deslisle, Deslonde, Destrehan, Dreaux, Drouillard, Dubreauil, Dubuclet, Dumas[/b], Dumois, Duplanchier, Dupuy, Dusuau, Duval, Duvernay, Esteves, Faucheaux, Faure/Favre, Ferrand, Ferrer, Florian, Fondall

These are the grandparent results I got from GEDMatch.
It guesses the roots of all 4 of your grandparents.
Quoteafrican-american + brong + dominican + fang

My grandmother's roots are basically in what is now the Dominican Republic.

However, Melungeons have their own identity in the states, and do not call themselves "Dominican" but their heritage is pretty much the same. That unique mix of ethnicities (African + Spanish/Portuguese + French + Native ) is what the test picked up and labeled it "Dominican".

I'm a firm believer and stan for DNA testing again.  :plzstop: :plzstop: :stressed: We are so LUCKY to have this stuff available.

I am just in shambles. The more I read and look at my results.....
I already knew the North Africa and Southern Europe resuts (Spain+Portugal) came from this heritage.

But there's even more of their beginnings HUNDREDS of years ago is still lurking around in my bloodstream!  :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:

QuoteThe Melungeons are a people of apparent Mediterranean descent who may have settled in the Appalachian wilderness as early or possibly earlier than 1567. The Mediterrean includes areas of North Africa, southern Europe and Central Asia.
