We're an eclectic lil e-family here. I always wondered what is it that makes people go UP for a song???
Vocals? Verses? Beat? A video? (You musical terminologists can help me with terms lolz)
A combination of beat, vocals, and lyrics for the most part
The beat, overall.
Production>
The vocal would have be completely terr to ruin the production
I typically go up for how the song ends and how it begins. The atmosphere it creates. The things I can feel/imagine while listening. I think that comes from the melody and flow more than anything.
Vocals and lyrics usually come last.

Usually if a songs can trigger my imagination. No matter the genre.
It could be the dumbest trap song imaginable. But if it my mind start to create a whole world for it with images n mess.
Like I start to envision the song.

Im like this with bjork. I dont always know wtf her mumble mouth ass is saying but the imagery and atmosphere her voice and music creates is amazing
The production. The mood. Mostly what bre said
For me it's a combination of beat and vocals.
I'm an atmosphere gorl as well. I love music that really captures a mood and makes me feel it, even if I can't understand a word they are singing.
For example...
I love this song, but I have no idea what they are saying.
However, I can still feel the song and interpret it the way I want.
I love music that stimulates me, no matter how basic or complex it may be.
Im thinking and it really is everything for me. I have heard songs where I like the beat but the voice is terrible, liked the voice but the lyrics are dumb, or I simply cant get beyond the music. Ive written songs off for all of them. This is kinda my problem with Brandy's Afrodisiac. Of course Brandy SINGS, but between those corny ass lyrics and that production, I just think it's a terrible song. Im very voice heavy tho so when she performed it live I actually was able to get in a lil more

well I like Rihanna's voice and its all about my preference so, yea. Afrodisiac is a TERRIBLE song but u dont have to share that opinion lolz

For you lyrical or mood folks, do you listen to music because it helps you feel something that you haven't expressed or become aware of?
I think for me it's the melody of the vocals and the beat.
And then the lyrics....
OVERALL, the beginning (of the beat/vocals) has to catch me and then the vocal arrangement and melody should keep me interested.
If not, I'll turn it off and try to relisten later (if it's someone worth retrying. ddd or unless I'm listening to an album)

that and nostalgia
It depends on the genre.
If it's something outside of R&B/pop, I can ignore something like shrill vocals or sparse production.
the beat first.. before i can even get into the lyrics i need to be invited in by some nice instruments or a beat.. then ill listen to the words too
Maybe not something that I havent expressed or become aware of but I just wanna connect with the song and what ur saying. I need to empathize, sympathize, SOMETHING! That's why I dont like alot of younger R&B. They usually aint talking about shit or the lyric is so damn basic
production is one thing. the melody (consistent or otherwise) has to be GOOD, period.
The vocal is important if im listening to a singer no matter the genre, and then eventually i get into the lyrics. If i really really like a song, THEN i start tuning into the lyrical conent, unless its a basic song and pretty straight forward, obviously.
I just realized I don't pay attention to lyrics half the time. I usually get caught up in the melody and production.
I've actually read lyrics to a song before and developed a new appreciation for it after I listen again with lyrics in mind. :ohwow:

I just started smoking recently. I was against it for the longest time, but it really does help to relax me and the music sounds soooo much better.

I love dawn's "champion"
I used to sing it all the time
The whole tale tell heart mixtape >
For me, it's the beat (production) and how the melody or vocal (tone) RIDES the fuck over it. I love catchiness.
Tone wise, an example would be "I Been That Girl" by Melanie Fiona.
Something has to resonate within me and intrigue me
Whether it's the best, melody, lyrics or vocal

the beat and the vocals...and the singer's approach on the song

Lastly,
I love how A song begins or ends. It kinda go up when certain artists let out a moan or lil signature rift to let ppl know it's them. Brit was kinda IT for that.
Songs ending like these....SEND me off proper dammnit!

the beat draw me in and the way she tackled that beat made me gravitate to the song instantly
If I can visualize it and create a scenario in my head.
Much more than lyrics and a cute beat.

I'm an atmosphere gorl as well. I love music that really captures a mood and makes me feel it, even if I can't understand a word they are singing.
I love music that stimulates me, no matter how basic or complex it may be.

Usually I focus mostly on the vocal
how the person sounds (tone/timbre the ad-libs, the bgvs/harmonies)
then the lyrics next, usually Im just hoping it makes sense and its some repetitive mess
then the production, but I pay most attention to that for rap/hip-hop since they dont really care
how they "sing"
