I've learned that being wealthy is relative.
If you're used to living on 500k salary, making 100k may seem daunting.
If you're used to living on a 20k salary, making 100k may be the fucking business.

Although there is the obvious poverty vs. rich spectrum.

Um, ultimately, money isn't everything - although a powerful tool.
But RESOURCES and EXPOSURE are everything.
And resources can come in many different ways.

Did you have caregivers who instilled education? That's a resource.
Were you taught to work, earn and manage your keep, no matter how rich or poor your family was? That's a resource.
It shapes who you are and what you end up doing later in life IF YOU PAY ATTENTION.

Well I grew up in a financially stable family who kept me on the right path educational wise even though I use to skip school to smoke blunts with friends and stuff. Now I'm an independent, career oriented guy who works hard as fuck for what he wants. Friends wise I'm surrounded with good people and I'm married to my 2 jobs and coins...fuck a nigga at this point

I grew up in the projects and in the hood
Often times homeless ..
But my mother worked very hard to get us from one side of town to another
I appreciate everything I've worked hard for because I remember not having food.. Not knowing where id sleep and things..
And I respect my mother for showing us the meaning of climbing from the bottom up..
That's why I was so determined to graduate college.. It was for her ...
And anyone that dates me hears my story and is so shocked .. I guess because of the way i carry myself and shit..
It just helped me appreciate ppl as well..

Middle class.

Even though I grew up in a family of 8 (6 children), there weren't a lot of things myself and my siblings wanted that we didn't get.

I grew up by Redbud Park. Wasn't the best neighborhood, but it wasn't the worst. My mother was a teacher's assistant and that monthly check wasn't enough to do shit with. I don't see how we made it but we did. But she later quit that job and she's now been working for the US Postal Service for like 19 years. We didn't always have EVERYTHING, but my mom made it her BUSINESS to make sure we were well taken care of even if she had to go without.

Yea, this.  I went to pretty good schools as well which is what i think has given me an appreciation for intelligence, different ethnicities, and different views. Some of the bigot style comments here are :uhh: to me at times tbh. I think it has had an impact on who i hang out with.  Most of my friends are pretty successful,  college graduates, etc. I wouldnt turn my nose up at "urban" friends tho. im all for accepting people but what I can't deal with are idiots.......or someone i deem so.  Intelligent conversation and SOMETHING going for urself if im gonna hang out with u.

This is an interesting topic.

I grew up in the 1% . My father was a doctor in private practice and he owned a hotel. We lived in a small Midwestern town so income was high and expense was low. That meant everything was paid for: foreign travel, clothes, cars, college, apartment after college, everything.

I don't think it was the best thing for me.

I spent alot of time being a complete fuck-up. I was aimless and spoiled. I was afraid of coming out of the closet and being cut off financially. I was afraid of telling my parents I wanted to be an artist. Since they paid for everything, I felt like they OWNED me.

I'm slowly making moves in my career and I think that's partly because I cut myself off. They still help me with things, but since I moved to L.A., I've been doing it on my own. I live in a modest apartment in the valley. I budget myself. I'm focused on making something for myself and hopefully one day I'll be at their level.

But in terms of relationships: I have ALWAYS been drawn to people who grew up lower-middle-class. I don't know why. Maybe because I really admire people who work their way up, and I think we can learn alot from each other.

Beautiful. I do think that growing up with money can cripple u. I think just enough money to be able to live comfortably but not enough that makes u forget the value of things is best. I feel like my youngest brother is spoiled a bit and it's to his detriment tbh. I went to school and figured out how to do things. I was very hands on with paperwork, buying my first car,  etc.  He got alot of things handed to him and it has done him a disservice imhfo

Well-off middle class and it made me naive asf but my upbringing prepared me to be a man. Deal with responsibility and stuff. My parents are always there for me.

I think the hardest thing that I've had to deal with and still do deal with everyday is being gay. I'm the only fag in my household and out of 5 brothers.

I'm definitely coming into a better space in my life though.

I always wondered how things would've been if I went to private school, verses the public schools I went to. And plus I come from a small town, where ALL of us in the city went to the same elementary, middle and high schools. Each and EVERY ONE of us.

And I come from a family of educators (on my mom's side). Most of my aunts and cousins are all teachers.

Middle class/wealthy for your standards but for the bush... I was RICH.

A Pool, my mom had a 540 Benz and I had a Compaq computer in 2000 + its modem! 😂 In the bush, THAT was MAJOR at this point.

Wealth is a double-edged sword. One of my closest friends tried to kill herself by overdosing on meds.

I remember visiting her in the hospital and her mom was in complete denial. In fact she left for a couple hours to go "shopping".

She was taking pictures of us in the room because she thought we looked "cute"  :uhh:

Her father completely dismissed any ideas of mental illness or depression and simply said she "should have taken her CPA exam. If she had a good job she wouldn't feel this way."

Her sisters, jealous because she lived in the high-rise condo her parents bought, said, "why would she try to kill herself when she lives in such a nice building?"

I was appalled. I had never seen a family so out-of-touch with reality.

My upbringing was similar to hewritez minus being in the 1%. I grew up in a nice, quiet neighborhood. Middle class. My dad has a really good job and my mom doesn't have to work but she just does to keep herself busy and buy extra stuff ;fff Spoiled. Got all the latest mess growing up. Dressed nice etc. I grew up getting all I ever wanted so imagine hearing "no" as I got older :uhh: and had to cut myself off in my 20's. Well not really cut off cause my parents still helps omf but yea... I think it's safe to say I don't know yet what it's like to be completely independent. And yea, growing up with giving parents can make you really naive and a different mentality from other more independent ppl. Like some ppl side eye you if you're not all like "Independent womuh! struggling! 3 jobs!" :uhh:

Honestly, I always wanted to grow up in the hood :ohwow: I remember when my parents used to drive by the projects in south part of Dallas I used to be all like :ohwow: and the all black schools seemed edgy as fuck. I think a tough upbringing builds character and gives you more stories to tell. And there seemed to be more unity.

My African parents def. do. In fact, it took my mom taking a psych class to figure out why her older brother was a nut ;fff I swear foreigners think they're immune to mental illness.

I'm a firm believer that where you grow up dictates how you see life.

I recently found out the town I live in is below the poverty line, but when people told me I couldn't believe it because my family has always lived comfortable. I attended a private school and lived in a beautiful neighborhood, but when I really thought about it, it did make sense.

I went to a private school up until my 9th grade year. The private school stopped at the 8th grade and the only way I'd be able to continue private school education would have been for me to move to a different town or go to the white school. I began attending public schooling and Lord it was DEPLORABLE. The students there were dumb as rocks. I remember when took a reading test when we were in the 10th grade and literally half my class results came back said that they read on 5th levels and below.

So I honestly don't blame "ghetto" people for how they act. They can't help it.

I am and yes soo true!

I think foreigners, especially those from India and countries in Africa, can't imagine why one would be depressed when there's so much opportunity to be had in America. But they don't realize that growing up with immigrant parents can create a whole slew of other problems.

What part of Africa? My parents, though Indian, are actually from Kenya and Tanzania.

The older I get the more I see this

My dad thinks as long as I have a good job nothing else matters. Feelings, friends, my fcking dog. He always told me growing up that I just needed to make money.

Then he constantly reminds me of how as a kid he walked 2 miles to school daily if I ever complained about needing a ride from school

Then, when I asked him WHY he's with his current wife, he says "she cooks and she works (and sucks his dick I'm sure)"

Like  :uhh:

He once said if a man isn't working he didn't need to live

Sssssssssss

I don't get it.

I can somewhat agree with this.  Your environment and who you're surrounded by can have a helluva impact on ur psyche. If u don't know better,  sometimes its hard to do better or believe that something better is coming.  I don't know better, all i know is what I've seen.  It's terrible

And alot of public schools just let anyone teach.

I remember my Biology class consisted of everyone just coming to talk and hang. Everydamn body would be in biology class just sitting chilling on the phone, humping and touching each other, or going on field trips to McDonalds for our teacher and whoever else wanted something to eat.

The teacher was nice and I loved her but she should not have been teaching. I'm glad I went to private school before public school or I would have been in special ED.

Right. The older I got and when I moved and started being around ppl like that. I learned that the odds were always against them since they popped out their my mom's womb. So I get their mentality. They can't shake it. I mean, it's sad and I will never understand it but it's just them and how they were born and raised. But IMO, it's toxic af. I can never see life on a "day to day" basis or having a hustler mentality. Trying to one up some damn body. Yuck.

and speaking of reading levels, it's incredibly sad how many black adults out here can barely read or spell. But whenever I look back I feel like those teachers intentionally didn't focus on the black, ghetto kids because of their race and vernacular. It's like they want to just damn them already. Hell, I saw it even in the 'good' schools and had issues with some teachers who tried it with me and my sister. It's like they WANT you to be dumb. There was a point when they TRIED to put me in ESL cause my parents are African :kii: I remember several instance when teachers would be petty give a negative mark over miniscule shit and my mom gathered their asses.

Are you Indian? I feel like foreigners in general have this mentality.

My African parents def. do. In fact, it took my mom taking a psych class to figure out why her older brother was a nut ;fff I swear foreigners think they're immune to mental illness.

"We give you everthing, the fuck you mean depression? Depressed about what?"   :plzstop: and don't get them started cause they will start rambling about their own childhoods. And it's crazy how the communities try to HIDE suicides. And claim they're accidents. I really can't.

East Africa, Ethiopia to be exact.

I grew up well, financially/stability/support wise.
I also grew up spoiled.
But I wasn't a brat. I was always grateful. And MINDFUL of what was what.

I also had an extremely-almost odd diverse family, in terms of culture, race, etc.
It impacted me tremendously, almost to a fault -- cause although I could never fully identify with a culture that wasn't mine, I had a different more-connected view/interest cause it was in front of me through family. And we also traveled the world a lot and I was exposed to many things.
That led to me having a diverse group of friends.
From one socio-economic group to another, all races mixed in between on all spectrums.

Although I could have been a spoiled young adult, I chose to pay attention to my upbringing and what my parents instilled in me (education, knowing what resources you have available, respect of yourself and others, etc.), and really took control of my life through spiritual guidance and dedication.

I wouldn't be surprised.

I live in a segregated town where the public schools are 98% Black and 2%other and the private schools are 98% white and 2% other. So I'm sure the white schools got everything they needed. I got lucky because there is one private school that is majority black but I don't think most of the black people in my town can afford it so it's been losing funding steadily as the years go by.

What is that? First time ever hearing of it.

A program that was designed for high school students in the 9th grade.

Quote
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Quote
Upward Bound is a nationwide, federally funded educational program, authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1965, for high school students. The Upward Bound Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County was initiated in 1989. The Program?s design promotes the development and enhancement of students? basic skills, academic and cultural enrichment, and the motivation necessary to matriculate at and graduate from college. To insure students? complete development, participation in  program activities is mandatory.

Upward Bound serves students who have demonstrated academic potential and who meet the income and first generation to obtain a four year college degree criteria established by the U.S. Department of Education. The Program provides students and their parents with an opportunity to invest in students? futures and thus realize their potential and goals.

This is the gist of it. In the summer you lived on campus of the university you were assigned to for like 8 weeks but I believe you could go home in the weekends. Great experience. Freedom from parents. Woo!

What is private a school like?

I attended public schools and I loved it. I was exposed to so many different types of people.

And when I started taking AP classes that's when the mess really got good. It was always the same 10-15 in each class.  :plzstop:

Private schools have such a bad rep where I am from, it means you are not smart enough to get by and need your parents to pay you through, it is funny how the impressions seems to be different stateside.

Nah it wasn't a private school. It was a program designed to prepare high school students for college and let them experience living on campus while doing academic activities.

I grew up in a pretty rough neighborhood in the Bronx (thanks to gentrification, it's damn near the suburbs now). Both of my parents are immigrants who came to the states looking for a better opportunity. I saw my mother work a part-time job, earn a college degree and raise a family, so that definitely fuels me to push myself as far as I can. Growing up I saw money/wealth as the end goal, we're all pretty much programmed to believe that the "american dream" is to end up rich and/or working a "good job" in corporate america (which is what I'm doing now :bvy: ).

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I want for a career or what my ultimate goal is and it's frustrating.

I think it depends on where you grew up at. I was raised in NYC, I first went to public school in 7th grade and it was a HUGE difference. I had to adjust to diversity, people (even teachers) cursing, and openly saying that they don't care if we learned or not cuz they're getting paid regardless. :uhh: :uhh:

It was crazy.

It made sense that my grandmother sheltered us from that environment as long as she could. But when my big sis went to college, she couldn't afford to support her and keep us in private school at the same time.

So she put us in the best public schools in NYC. Literally, I went to the best public schools FAR away from my neighborhood. I used to wonder why she went out of her way to put us in schools so far from where we lived, the travel was horrendous.  :plzstop:

And it STILL was a mess in comparison.  :plzstop: :plzstop:

But that's NYC. I think if you live in a different city/state ,it could be different. For instance, there are many public schools in Long Island that are just as good as the private schools. Not every child needs to head to a private mess.

vvvkldkfllddmdmf

I used to hear that so much from teachers in middle school and high school

"I get paid either way  :letsmessfag: y'all wanna end up in summer school or getting left back, than oh well lmao!"

but it's understandable to lash out when you're trying to teach a classroom with over twenty students and half of them wanna talk and interrupt the learning environment. I have the utmost respect for teachers who work in shitty public schools because that requires a world of dedication and patience.

Yeah, I realized that a while ago. Growing up in the crevices of the hood gives you a different perspective on wealth and personal success.

I had to unlearn a lot of the things I was taught about what equates to happiness and not measuring my goals alongside someone else's.

My ongoing goal... as I don't believe of any "end" type of a goal, more-so "one-stepping-stone-to-another"... is maintaining/growing my financial income and working less hours to do so. I'll have the opportunity to do that maybe in the next 5 years. Also, am I making an impact? And am I being impacted by others? And what am I doing with that to help shape myself and those around me for the better.

But the biggest ongoing goal is my continued PEACE and CONTENTment, and solidification of my spiritual connection.
Without that, obstacles-setbacks and all of life's crazy can really throw you off.

I had never seen a family so out-of-touch with reality.
wow. this is why I never understood why people think everyone with that kind of money is so happy and thrilled to be alive lol this world is fucked up either way

Even with someone obviously sheltered from reality like your friend is, it doesn't mean they won't eventually experience what real love and support should feel and look like, being around friends like you who likely have supportive friends and family.

Once they experience that, it's pretty hard to be happy going home to a place of NO love and cold hearts like what you described. I really can't imagine

We grew up lower middle class, I dunno, I wouldn't say poor only because my parents worked very hard. I did eat syrup sandwiches tho very young, or days when I would eat and mom wouldn't. Didn't understand why.

They had a vision tho, I used to go sit outside the class while mama was in her college courses when she went back.
Somehow they managed to reach their goals and still allow us the opportunity to reach ours. We lived in the hood, but We moved to a home on the hills when I was young after it got too bad.

We all had to sacrifice when my older bro went off to school, but somehow all 4 of us managed to graduate college and even get graduate degrees. My folks are upper middle class now tho, they really did well and closed the gap and I hope to do the same in my life. As a ppl we were so behind, both my grandmothers couldn't read, grandfathers worked their asses off; but now over time my parents are business owners. I just hope I can continue and keep growing.

I identify best with ppl who have ambition and have a strong sense of motivation. I don't do well around ppl who are entitled, but also don't do well with ppl who are defeated and blame their surroundings for their current or future state.

I just learned to appreciate everything and everyone, I love ppl who don't take themselves too seriously which is why I joke in here all the time. All my closets friends are very humorous and all described as ppl with big hearts, if you don't reach back, you gotta pay it forward.

Love this.

Like literally there were kids who should not have been in special ED there was nothing wrong with them their grades were just so awful they placed them in special ED
fbnff gggggg

That's true for so many public schools in certain areas. Fucking sad

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I want for a career or what my ultimate goal is and it's frustrating.
with a brain like yours, you'll find what works for you eventually. I can't imagine it any other way :dead:

I used to not care about that, until the past year or so

Ralf you hurt my feelings earlier bby.

I'm sorry, was not my intention.

I don't why me telling you "Bent, enough".
Would cause u shade me right after. You knew what u were doing.
And so I had to finally address u, cause u've been taking shots for a little while now.
I didn't shade you boy.
You are always late or busy :dead:

I wasn't taking Jay serious at all lol
when ppl are threatening my life I just need you to be fully engaged and making sure I'm safe. Not attacking me bby.

I'm not the only one who is late or busy.
You have people like Rig who comes MUCH LATER and does a recap of every thread.
:dead:

You did it in a shady way, IMO.
That's how I feel about it.

And once I saw Jay's "killing" comments I closed the thread.
It's all good. Lol.
Much love.
n

Why are you bringing me up

Yea,  that was pretty inappropriate, ESPECIALLY considering that he's the only one that uses that excuse.
So bus' LIFE!
Rig knows what's going on usually.  Never heard him say he's busy living this super full life.  Luv Ralf tho btw

I'm just tired of people making it seem like I MUST be in the KNOW of every thing that goes on here. Like it's some of kind of embarrassment not to know who shaded who on 5/12/16 @ 3:41pm 33 seconds.

It's annoying.

Stop giving me shit about it.
And let me be.

And no Rig doesn't give that excuse, cause RIG comes in and reads thru the threads. Most of them.

I don't.

But he ain't at home perched on no damn computer. Nobody parading a "oh busy life!" tea. That's just what life is, you go out and live it. No specialty to it.

I forgot what it was... but there was something people were talking about. And I didn't know what happened. And it was confusing. And IMAN posted "What happened?"... I was happy for her saying that, cause people told her with no problem. Had I asked, I would have gotten an "n" and no response.

Why do you always come off condescending when you get upset tho?

Like "oh yawl are here all the time! I'm wealthy"

That's not right Ralf
:howfestive:

I have NEVER said those words.
:uhh:
The hell.

Stop projecting your stuff on me. Plz.
That's not even who I am.
stop getting upset Ralf
I'm not attacking you

I'm just saying how you come off

This is a thread about personal experience and you came in here talking about being wealthy and the benefits of helping ppl :dead:

Im sorry but !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :kii:

Honestly, I'm sorry that's happening, and/or that's the experience.
Not my intention.

I'm just annoyed that no one can understand why I may not be ON IT all the time (BSource stuff). And GET ATTACKED for it. Give me a break.

Going to college was def a culture shock for me. I went to an art school in an... urban area. I'm used to it now but that first year omg.  :ohwow: :ohwow:

Like, I was never used to seeing homeless people begging for money while out and about until I came to college.  :uhh: :uhh:

I think going to college helped me see how privileged I was in a lot of ways. For years I was comparing myself to these ultra rich kids only to find out that I had it pretty damn good myself.  :-/ ^o)

I can kinda relate.

When I was in elementary, I would wonder why the kids who lived right across the street from the school just didn't come to my school instead of boarding the bus to go somewhere else every morning. (I'd see them every morning we had to stand outside and do the pledge of allegiance before entering the building, and be sprinkled with "holy water" :dead: )

Being older I appreciated my grandmother's sacrifice even more. Things that are normal life for you, just an everyday routine, things that you took for granted, may be seen as a privilege to others .

!!!!

It's all relative!!!

It's not that I don't date my race, it's that there was only like 3 black guys that went to my entire school and only a few black girls as well. I just wasn't given many options. Don't get me wrong, I think black men are very attractive  :supluv:

Middle class.

Even though I grew up in a family of 6 (4 children), there weren't a lot of things myself and my siblings wanted that we didn't get.

What I meant was, though, even if you didn't grow up middle class, wealthy or rich, but if you present yourself as such then you could be perceived as such. Not a huge deal, but I'm just saying I think it's a natural thing to be attracted to someone who is similar or seems similar to you.  :uhh:

upper middle class. Most people in my hometown were in the same boat, so it didnt really have an impact on me and I never thought anything of it until I went off to college... Seeing friends go through struggles that you never even have to think about makes you appreciate everything your parents have done for you.

You told the board in that one thread, that everyone should be ganging up on Ralf.
I read that. And I didn't address u THEN. But I addressed u NOW for another reason, in this thread cause it was unnecessary.
You like to instigate things at times. Lol.

Your perception is just THAT. It's not always TRUTH, Bent.
Remember that. And I addressed that situation, not even concerned.

You are WRONG for trying to take DIGS and not think that someone will not eventually POP the fuck back. Simple. I don't know why you're getting upset. Clearly I RESPONDed to your COMMENTS, that u POSTED first.

There's a lot of misconceptions about me on here.
And I think a lot of it is generalizations and perceptions.

There is one thing I want to address though.

Talking about "work" IMO is a common topic amongst us young adults.
We are starting careers, making changes, figuring out our next move with education, etc.
These are the stuff my friends and I discuss. And it's natural. We're in that space in our lives.

I'm tired of people trying to TWIST and TURN that into something else. It's not right...
Especially when "working" and having limited time to do relaxing things is not just exclusive to me. :uhh:
We ALL have to do it.
There's people on here who can identify with that.

I'm just in a career-orientated space and stacking RIGHT NOW. So of course, my comments would reflect that. And I find interest in those threads, like the one Afro posted recently. I love those conversations. That simple. I'm just trying to connect to someone who may be interested in that too.

Now, when I get attacked for not knowing what happened (especially since I don't read thru long-ass threads like that when I sign back on), of course I'm gonna BLAME my schedule, cause that's the reason why I haven't been able to chill and mess. And the reason why I may say it so much, is because I get SHADED SO MUCH. I don't see why I should be condemned for that.

Well my parents are immigrants and they grew up in West Africa, and they are the first from each of their families to actually settle OUT  of their respective countries, they've both came from higher positions of employments back home to lower paid ones here in order to make it work in England, there was a time my mum was working 3 jobs :uhh:
we didn't grow up poor but we grew up mindful and grateful lol my parents especially my father never let us forget how it was for him growing up :dead:
So I guess it made my bothers and sisters all appreciative and value education
Like my older brothers have actually left London and started business in Africa and my two younger sisters are starting up ventures of their own and want to expand them back on in West Africa, and my mother when she retires is going back to open an Orphanage
So in all us appreciative I guess
