Despite being black?
:ATLcameo:
Honestly, i see anyone with "black" skin as black. We just all have different backgrounds and circumstances but that's no different from the black guy from the hood vs the black guy from the burbs. Both of ya BLACK
Yes. The cultural separation is hard to ignore/overlook.

Of course.
I find there's segregation between Black British - African and Black British - Caribbean too.
People are always trying to make subgroups to make themselves feel superior.

Different cultures ofc
But at the end of the day we're all black and we're all beautiful people of the diaspora.
Iono, I don't
But I've always been told they do (Africans, and Afro-Carribeans)

Culturally yes. Everything else...nah.
it's tricky but you should def see Africans, African Americans, and other black and brown folk as separate people. Socially, I can see why we'd want to lump us all together, but culturally no. To me, accepting "Black" when you know otherwise is just subscribing to the White notion that we're all just niggers, you're all just Black. especially when this is coupled with "in their eyes..." Youre submitting to massa's viewpoint. You're doing yourself a disservice by accepting that and not representing/valuing/acknowledging your background. Why can a White person sport Irish, German, etc and be Irish or German..... but we can't be Dominican or whatever without one of US going "ch you're Black have a seat." It's very slave-like actually, that mentality. We're automatically jealous or threatened by one of us trying trying to embrace something "other." Don't get me wrong it's equally slave-like to embrace things when they don't really apply to you, to try to give special, exotic, whatever.

great point!
Absolutely. To me African American is a distinct ethnic group with w distinct history. It's like saying Black Cubans, Black Brazilians and Somalis are the same...
I think it comes from a lack of us not knowing anything past Jim Crow tbh
And African-Americans need to reclaim that power. White ppl can sit and talk about their heritage and ancestors all day long
I've been guilty of that at times tbh
"Oh such and such is claiming Puerto Rican, that nigger thinks she's better than"
Recent events on BSource really changed my views on it

It is. I also think when people use this same logic to "other" themselves or to be divisive, that also plays into white supremacy & colonialism.

It goes both ways german and irish still is white or caucasian
Black and afro caribean is still black or negroid
Ethnicity doesnt change race
But its good to aknowledge the cultural differences because they matter
And they each have their own set of history that will put u on one side or the other
Just like i dont wanna be lumped in with modern day africans cause we aint the fucking same
Im black.american
As far as the subgroups i think its really just a call to. Keep.blacks unified because all over the globe blacks have suffered oppression but some feel their struggle is a lil better than others lol
Great points guys. Whew.
Def' separate cultures, but I see some common denominators between all of us. The need for separatism between us needs to cease tho. I've come across quite a few non american blacks who look down on us because they think their ancestors weren't on anyone's plantation or possibly hanging from a tree.

yeah, To have pride in being AA means you first have to have pride in something you most likely have no knowledge of, your African roots. That alone is hard to achieve. Then, you'd have to have pride in the "American" part, which has and continues to mistreat us in ways, and has left an overall bad taste in our mouths. I can see why being AA isn't enough.

But if ur ignorant to what these people can look like in a place that doesn't have as much variety as NYC you'd probably assume that a dark skin person is rocking a jeri curl or perm.
That's the problem with people down south. They are not used to variety. I literally had this female AA barber tell me that it was interesting cuz usually she only sees light skin people with my type of hair texture. Examining my fucking roots to make sure it was mine.

Culturally yes.
I think alot of times people just like to ignore the diversity of blackness and act like we're all the same, but culturally some non black Americans don't understand why we do and say certain things and we likewise don't understand other black cultures like we want to beleive.
I also think it's interesting how we accept the term black as a signifier happily despite it being a colonial term like "Nigger, Negro, Colored", but Asians and Native Americans sure as hell won't accept being called Yellow and Red.
Great point. I've seen people from both "races" use the term to describe their people though.
I can't look at most people and tell what their ethnicity is. I can admit maybe we aren't really conditioned for that in the U.S, which is unfortunate.
White people will just be white people to me, all over the damn globe. Idc where they're from. When I used the term "Black" its more so talking about a lived experience although there are definitely variations in how that plays out based on culture. Basically what Lew and Vonc [unfortunately] said.
I also see you & Lonz point though and agree.
I think most people don't see black as being special either that's why nobody really cares.
I mean how many times do you hear people say they're mixed with British, Irish, Blackfoot, Choctaw, Japanese, Polynesian, Mexican...and black.
But idk I personally like researching different cultures so that's maybe why I like identifiying black identifities.

That's true. This is why I think people really want to be other'd from the term. I also recognize the importance of culture though, so I guess im ambivalent about the whole thing.
Culturally, yes. There is a difference.
Race. No.
But that's obvious, I think?
White ppl use it for themselves. And I think the classifications of white and black were bound to be made.
I find it just interesting that whiteness is exclusive and that's not questioned, but everybody gets to be black... There must be so many underlying issues to this.

it's all so weird, we talk about how the Asians are terrible when it comes to their perception of blacks, but the biracial ones, say that ish like its the icing on the cake. Well the Koreans who are clearly mostly asiatic, I know for sure. My bf is such, and there's a whole community of them who really take pride in having Black in their mix. it's like an a-ha! It's cute.

I don't get this thing that you guys say Afro-Caribbean gorls think they are better than you. If you come to the Caribbean it's the exact opposite. You come here with an American accent and you'll be treated a million times better than the locals are, no matter how black you are...

Well yeah...that's true. But the only country with any real violence against gays is Jamaica. In Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados, etc. you might be heckled or taunted, but no one would physically attack you. And even taunting and heckling rarely happens here in Guyana anymore. Attitudes are changing and the younger generation is leading the charge. The gorls walk down the streets holding hands, showing PDA and stuff like that these days. Jamaica is a nightmare though. I wouldn't be against nuking them and starting from scratch.

I just watched a doc about Jamaica and other homophobic African countries on "abominable" crime.S eeing all the narratives of SGL people trying to seek asylum in inclusive countries because people were trying and killing them left and right. It was sad. I felt so privileged but I also wanted to wipe Jamaica out.

I mean ... it's been imbedded in us
i remember growing up the girls were clamoring to find White/Indian/or even Mexican relatives
And that somehow made them prettier or more attractive than those of us who were just .... black :dead:
Coupled with the fact American history is littered with hints that "black" is bad (modern Christianity)
I remember visiting vacation bible school at like 8 and the teacher making the point that anything black was dark and ... evil
I kinda just shifted in my seat, but I felt bad lol
:hmph:
I don't think that's Christianity. That's the English language. The use of "black" as a synonym for evil and white with purity. It is pretty deep, though. "Black magic" "blackmail" ect...
