Ur right. Neither. Yea, Monica
:dead:
Definitely Mya but ironically, she's like the best vocalist next to Brandy in 2018.
She's the one who has continuously worked at her art and whose growth is most apparent aside from always being the most skilled dancer among the four girls.

I'm always curious about Aaliyah's direction were she still alive. Out the four girls, she definitely was the most creative. She understood her art and evolved with it. She gave us "We Need a Resolution". Who tf else?

I do believe the label played a part, but I think accountability comes into play as well. Artists clash with labels all the time. I know Mya always had to fight for her creative voice whilst at Interscope and though not always executed with precision, artists like her can definitely look back and say I fought to go in said direction because that was where my volition lied. I agree with you AND I will say there's a complacency with Monica creatively. "Code Red" was...cute, but sis...who is Monica the artist?

Did you watch her Sway's interview? She said her label welcome/encourage her creative input from the get go.
Mya didn't even have a sound. And because she desperately wanted to prove how diverse of a dancer she was, she never focused on honing a specific type of dance genre that people could remenber her for. She really didn't even do shit

Idk about a sound. She could definitely SING and has the most down-to-earth personality, but Mya carved a lane for herself. '98 she literally became the girl who hopped on all the rappers hooks and was a part of some historical moments in culture i.e. Rugrats, Ghetto Superstar, Moulin Rouge, etc. Hip-Hop embraced Mya and she could kill an 8-count.

I hear this argument. Her vocabulary as a dance artist is so vast that it is a challenge for folks to pinpoint exactly her aesthetic and/or her appeal especially in Pop music. She's hit on every genre of dance with the exception of ballet and even then that's evident in the way she moves.

With Code Red she played with different sounds. But I agree I need a more signature sound from her .
I really want to see what she?s capable of away from RCA
There?s room for artistic growth big time with her
We all knew that was Mya! :kii: She's the only female voice on the song. And I don't disagree. Monica is way more culturally impactful. But to deny Mya's contribution to Pop music and to contemporary dance would be neglectful.

If you?ve been listening to R&B from new stars Tinashe, FKA twigs, and Jhen? Aiko, you might have heard the echo of a familiar kind of sound: the sultry, futuristic music of that small surge of R&B pop from around the turn of the century?girl groups like Blaque, 3LW, and 702, and the singer M?a. Though they have now mostly faded from the front row of pop culture, these artists are proof of a kind of inevitability of influence, with their sounds now palpable in the music of a whole new generation of musicians who grew up on their hits.
Quote
Influenced by the avant-popiness of their predecessors, these women elbowed out the crunchy catchiness of Britney Spears and aggression of Kid Rock with interesting, seductive music. It wasn?t neo-soul so much as neo-R&B?an innovative take on a beloved genre that promised a way forward. They collaged the dominant sounds of R&B production at the time (from innovators like Timb, Missy, Jermaine Dupri, and"Boy is Mine" producers Dallas Austin and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins) and made something peppy and poppy and radio-friendly that kept pace with the Britneys and the N ?Syncs without sacrificing experimentation.
Quote
But the DNA of M?a, 3LW, Blaque, and 702 is there in every smoky, steely note. Though the careers of the Y2K girls didn?t last?perhaps Destiny?s Child, who emerged around the same time, mopped up all the glory?it?s clear that their influence has.

Not seeing any links
Aaliyah was more known for the dancing than Mya. Her movement was specific to who she marketed as. Mya NEVER had that synchronicity with how she and her team packaged her "brand."
And she definitely does not have a sound

On this playlist of inspirations, shared below exclusively with Billboard, old-school Beyonc?, Mya, Lauryn Hill and Aaliyah blend with Rihanna and H.E.R. to paint a picture of a '90s R&B dream with a modern twist. Of course, Normani?s sultry collaboration with Khalid, ?Love Lies,? tops the list.
?I just want to take it back to the music I fell in love with, and what made me fall in love with music for the first time,? Normani said of the playlist. ?I grew up with my grandmother driving me to school and my mother listening to '90s music.?

Monica does have a few records she managed in her career relating to Hot 100 hits and her very young age. Plus the records she achieve with Brandy on TBIM. Lazarus on the other hand...
!!
Mya has nothing where it counts. An article can only prove so much. What that Hot 1 hunnid say? LMFAO!
