Who had the bigger impact on R&B?
Option 1: Mariah
votes: 9
Option 2: Mary
votes: 40
Coz I'm listening to both girls back to back and :guys:
Mary
I honestly don't see alot of Mariah impact in music tbh
Can't choose. They both are kinda QUEENS
I was listening to "I Can Love You" :stressed:
but then Mariah's "Breakdown" swooped me!
but then Mary's "You Are Everything" just started and....
:stressed:
Mary
Mariah outside of it though. But as Far as R&B goes, Mary is like top 2. Probably only Aretha had the bigger impact
Both, tbh.
On the genre itself, Mary.

The singer is also credited for introducing R&B and hip hop into mainstream pop culture, and for popularizing rap as a featuring act through her post-1995 songs. Sasha Frere-Jones, editor of The New Yorker commented, "It became standard for R&B/hip-hop stars like Missy Elliott and Beyoncé, to combine melodies with rapped verses. And young white pop stars—including Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, and 'N Sync—have spent much of the past ten years making pop music that is unmistakably R&B." Moreover Jones concludes that "[Carey's] idea of pairing a female songbird with the leading male MCs of hip-hop changed R&B and, eventually, all of pop. Although now anyone is free to use this idea, the success of The Emancipation of Mimi suggests that it still belongs to Carey."[69]

Both, tbh.
!!!!
Both kinda defined hip-hop R&B. Mary is Queen, but Mariah was integral herself with her R&B ballads and remixes. She popularized the staccato rap-singing style that Beyonce cultivated years later.
Mary
Mary pretty much is the definition of R&B
Mariah is a great vocalist/ songwriter her influence is stronger in the POP world IMO
Mariah obviously. Much bigger and better artist.
Mary is a legend in her own right as well! Love her

Mary
If we're talking about R&B, perhaps Mary. But as far as musical impact period, oh that's Mariah hands down. She's inspired people of all different genres.
Mariah could never get the reaction a mary medley performance got at the bet awards or elsewhere.
Not to even mention the pop and rock legends that go the fuck up for mary and this was pre the breakthrough.
Mariah is the first industry plant.

Mary of course. She defines R&B. Let us not act like Mariah didn't become R&B until after Mary J. Blige. Every song Mariah released before MJB was POP.

Okay, now listen, when I think of artists that are DIRECTLY inspired by Mary J, I think of Keyshia Cole and K Michelle.
With Mariah, she DIRECTLY influenced a lot of female VOCALISTS, including Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, Christina Aguilera, JoJo, Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, all these ladies grew up listening to and has always spoken highly of MC being a huge influence. Let's really not undermine her influence. Cause if it wasn't Whitney to a lot of these 2000s girls, it was definitely Mariah.

Like I said, generally speaking, I honestly believe Mary influenced the 2000s R&B girls more than MC cause that's the core of her music, but MC has influenced a much more WIDER crop of girls. And one of the biggest things she influenced artists to do is to pick up a damn pen and pad, and write & produce your work. Her whistle register alone is legendary, got these young girls tryna mimic her, tryna hit those big notes. Oh shit, I even forgot about Leona Lewis and Jordin Sparks and how they stan for her ass. C'mon now. And Mariah's music has been sampled way more than Mary's have. Her Christmas album is a staple and the amount of covers of All I Want For Xmas by artists of all genres. Y'all betta keep it the fuck cute on MC's influence. Mary may be #1 in Keyshia Cole's eyes, but MC influenced VOCALISTS.

In an interview with NPR's Debbie Elliott about her latest album, 'The Breakthrough', Mary J. Blige cites Mariah Carey as a source of inspiration in her early singing career.
NPR: I read that you started singing as a kid in church and that you would also sing in talent shows. Was there some performance along the way where you started to think "Hey, I think I can do this, I like this"?
MJB: Let me see, I had performed at a club when I was a teenager. I sang one of Mariah Carey's songs. I think it was 'Love Takes Time' 'cause I'm a fan of Mariah Carey's. I love her. So it was that performance at the club that night. The club was called Arthur's. [sings a verse of 'Love Takes Time'] That one. Her songs gave us a lot of hope and I finally got a chance to tell her, "You played a part in saving our lives, little project kids – we had nothing. You know, sometimes the lift for it felt like and it was your music that saved our lives and made us want to sing 'cause you were an angel and still are to us."

No matter the lies you tell yourself, Mary music became a major influence on Mariah Carey's sound. When Uptown Records dropped Mary's first #1 singles, "You Remind Me" and "Real Love," she kicked open the door on a new sound that would forever influence the way R&B was approached, especially for female artists like Mariah "whistleblowing" Carey.

Reading really is fundamental. I've expressed TWO times in this thread already that Mary has a bigger influence than MC when it comes to R&B. And this will be my 3rd. What I have said is that MC's influence is more widespread. And the only reason I brought that up is because folks was tryna undermine MC's influence by saying she doesn't have any impact at all (see pages 1 through 3) and she doesnt inspire other artists or music. Like she's just some girl who sings hit songs. Thats what I am responding to. I said all the things I said and I'm sticking to it. For those who cant comprehend and see that I already stated Mary takes the cake in this regard, then it aint my fault y'all dont have a brain.
This comparison on a whole is dumb anyways cause MC doesnt sing just one genre like Mary does. Half her catalogue y'all gon say is Pop anyways.

People really try to keep Mary in a box but truly have no ideas of her impact across genres. I'm never knocking Mariah "Whistleblower" Carey, but there is a reason why MJB is the ONLYYYY artist with a Grammy in R&B, Rap, Pop, and Gospel.

That's because Mariah was never R&B. She was a Pop artist who desperately wanted to be liked and respected in the Hip Hop & R&B lane....she envied Mary for the acceptance that she had amongst her peers. That's why you saw a huge shift in Mariah music AFTER MJB...she wanted out of that Pop world that she was boxed into.

Wasn't Mariah jealous of Mary's street cred?
She said she'd trade all her sales for that
QuoteRooney: One night, we went to dinner at Sylvia's in Harlem -- me, Tommy, and Mariah. On our way back, we were riding in the limo and every club, every car was bumping "Fantasy." Mariah put her sunglasses on, and tears came down her cheeks, because she couldn't believe her record was getting played all through the hood. That was the beginning of her not turning back to pop.
She once told me though she was grateful for her success, she would trade in all of her record sales to get the respect that Mary J. Blige got. She said, "Mary doesn't have to sell 28 million records to be respected -- people respect Mary, and I just want to be respected like her."

Called the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul", Blige is credited with influencing the musical marriage of hip hop and R&B.
Ethan Brown of The New Yorker says that albums "What's the 411?" and "My Life", in hindsight, invented "the sample-heavy sound that reinvigorated urban radio and became a blueprint for nineties hip-hop and R&B".
Brown further concludes that Mary's "duets with the Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man and Ghostface Killah set the trend for collaborations between rappers and R&B songbirds like Mariah Carey".
Tom Horan of The Daily Telegraph comments that Blige, being a hugely influential figure in popular music, "invented what is now called R&B by successfully combining female vocals with muscular hip hop rhythm tracks. All over the world, that recipe dominates today's charts.
"Called one of the "most explosive, coming-out displays of pure singing prowess" and "one of the most important albums of the nineties",
What's the 411? saw Blige pioneer "the movement that would later become neo soul, generating gripping songs that were also massive radio hits".

I always look back to Mary's first Grammy performance in which she performed No More Drama. The passion in that performance was due to the countless years of being deprived of all of her accomplishments, including paving the way for so many artists...even the pop favorites. Since her debut you could not and still can't turn on the the radio without hearing her influence. The lady is legendary, influential and transcendent from the cookie cutter norm at the time (Whitney, Mariah and Toni). There is and always will be something about Mary.

Mary is number one in many people's eyes. Shut the fuck up.
