It's interesting how people all of a sudden buy albums when someone dies...

I don't think it is "all of a sudden". This is typically what happens when someone who actually made some contributions to music or was a major talent passes.

For instance, Natalie Cole didn't see a surge in sales after her passing and didn't get a #1 album either. David Bowie on the other hand is a legend who did this in 5 different decades. Their purchasing after their passing is a reminder of what they have been hearing and loving over the years but may not have actually purchased. Also the young kids may have only been introduced after the passing and encourages them to purchase also.

Genesis

It could go either way
Tlcs album flopped even with lefteye dying.

there was a small surge in Natalie's sales
of course the white man's sales surge was bigger though

Whats the criteria to become a legend though? That word has different definitions.

If by small surge, you mean VERY VERY VERY small surge, then yes. And let's not make this black or white. One is a legend and the other had a bad attitude and got by off of their famous father's name....

Not only when somebody dies, when somebody makes huge headlines and becomes a buzzing topic you tend to check out their music. Death just gives you maximum exposure.

IDK about attitude but Natalie is just as much a legend as David Bowie AND her father were

SouravMay

are u guys stupid? David Bowie died during RELEASE WEEK, that is much different from Natalie Cole. Had sis died right during album promo phase, she would also perch in the top ten.
