Quotewhich is forking over the dough to lock up some of his best-known songs ... such as, "Ride Wit Me," "Dilemma" and of course, "Hot in Herre." Obviously they're getting more than just that ... but those tracks are, by and large, the ones Nelly's perhaps best-known for.

Doesn't look like it

This is kinda a book, I wonder what kind of income those songs are generating vs. the payout

this DUMB mf.

i don't understand why these artists aren't studying the model of companies that do this and implementing that model for their own music to generate that residual income for THEMSELVES

these companies ain't paying 50 mill for the mess if they aren't confident that they're going to get a NICE return on their investment. idk maybe i'm missing sumn

The Only BLACK Kalmyks

i think it could be a wise idea to sell an aging catalog - especially for pop-ish music that he did

the 50 mil he got is guaranteed but there's no guarantee on a specific amount of revenue generating from the music 10-20 years from now

if he invests the money wisely in something that's more likely to give a good return he's good

50 mil a bit low for him tbh. I'm sure his catalog worth much more than that.

im sure he has someone working on his behalf to make sure the valuation was more than fair

If he sold for 50 mill it's probably worth 50 million , or he coulda actually a great deal if it was valued at 48 and he has a great team that made them round it up to 50 lol

its kinda like selling a home. a home could "look" like its worth 2 million to people unfamiliar with the process and all contributing factors to value,  but once a professional assessment is performed and all contributing factors to value are considered, its actual/true value is 750K.

Selling your catalog actually makes sense today versus when physical sales were dominating. Most artists don't really see much of a profit from streams so this $50M sounds like way more than what he would've profited from the songs moving forward. The most important thing is to OWN your catalog to be able to make the decision to keep or sell at some point.

very true. just being able to make that decision of whether to hold it or an informed decision to sell it is where the power is.

It does seem low if it is his masters. The article makes it seem that he sold 50% of his masters but if it's his stake in his publishing then the figure would be determined on the percentage he owns of his songs.

The definition

A number of artists are selling their catalogs, like justin Bieber sold his for $200 million, MJ's estate wants to sell half of MJ's catalog for $900 million.... Seems like the forecast for these catalogs is that they won't earn so much in the future, but then again why are these companies investing in these catalogs if their future returns look bleak, that's the question

!!!!!!

that's what i'm saying. these companies wouldn't be dropping all this money on these catalogues if they didn't see VALUE in them. thats why i'm saying these artists need to study the model and start earning this income for THEMSELVES. the big instant one-time payout my be nice, but a STREAM of income is way better imo. these songs gon be around even after they die. keeping their catalogue mess and monetizing it could set their children's children up for life.
