Gilgamesh.

My single choice for Afro era:

Afro > TAOL > WIS2U remix (ONLY if Usher's team allowed him to be in the video, if not) > I Tried (with a full month of European promo)

WYWB as a promo single.

Quote from: United Nations Barbie 🇺🇳 on Today at 05:21:11 PMThe song Afro should've been given a big budget and push bc it has hit written all over it. That as a lead would've made a big splash since it would've easily fit with hits at the time. I Tried has such a big sound and would've been to release at the time as the album. TAOL shortly after with Kanye would've reignited more interest after release and then WIS2U to close out the era and maybe even a fifth single.

Afrodisiac (the song) needed a big budget Hype Williams video for sure to sell that type of record... something like Jay-Z's Big Pimpin video, at a carnival, Caribbean or South America location, beautiful Black women & men just dancing, sensuality, colors, sun, sweat, and having a good time. A male love interest of like a Tyson Beckford looking dude tryna pursue her too

And again Brandy would've needed to keep them new mami titties she had at the '02 VMAs.

I don't think the video concept was bad I think the way it was filmed was. I def agree, Hype would have had her looking like a million bucks...instead of drowning in a shallow pool with a bad wig.

Quote from: Vonc2002 on Today at 05:44:34 PMAfrodisiac is a terrible song. If that was a first single I would've thrown the album away RIGHT away. That song was released over in the UK because that's more a UK vibe. That's not a US song
You're listening with 2026 ears. It was perfect for 2004
I hated it even more then.  The only reason I kinda like it now is live performances.  It isn't a good single AT ANY POINT! I hate they wasted any money on it at all when they could've pushed a 3rd single over here

:plzstop: I also didn't like it the first FEW listens but it grew on me quickly and as lead single for what was essentially a new Brandy, it made sense.

It's flirty but not overly sexual, it's urban but the hook is very Pop. And sonically, there's a through line with WAU and Afro.

TAOL doesn't sound like anything Bran had done before, and not in a good way

Gilgamesh.

I Tried with the right push would earned Bran her 2nd Grammy or at least a nomination. I'll die on that hill.

TAOL fit the more darker sound she was doing with timbaland tbh. All of the album has a DARKER feel to it.  Focus, Finally, Necessary, etc. Afrodisiac ACTUALLY didnt fit at all because of how poppy it sounded. Taol didnt really need to sound like anything she had done before because that album didnt sound like anything Brandy had done before.  I understand why u like afrodisiac tho.  I think that sound is VERY UK/Europe. Even when she started singing it at the concert my friend and I looked at each other like :-/  :plzstop:
This is my pass to say WHATEVER tf I wanna say about the mess she releases so I don't wanna hear SHIT! Baby mama is a mess of a song btw

That song has such an EVERYONE sound to it and definitely woulda got recognized.  I remember hearing the snippet before the album had came out and being blown tf AWAY! She had never sung like that before. The way Brandy hops over obvious singles is so baffling to me. The way SLOWER shoulda came out on 2/11........I just......whatever lemme get outta here before I fume

!!!

Afro the song had all of the necessary elements for a hit. A predecessor for the Promiscuous era singles tbh. A perfect way to usher in uptempo Brandy singles.

Now this!!! I'm sorry once they saw TAOL had only moderate success, they should've just pushed to I Tried looking back... it had the universal big moment that would've ate TRL and 106 & Park up!

Harlem

Even though this a highly praised deep cut but I think Focus could've worked as a 3rd single after I Tried to sell a "theme or mood" for the era

Where You Wanna Be as well but since I know the backstory now I doubt Brandy would've let that happen

Andthecategoryis...

The project was never gonna work because the label didn't believe in her or her choices and didn't know how to market her...bad styling, bad wigs and a cheap budget. Songs that were obvious choices to make the cut were fvcked over....I wonder what some of the other unreleased sounded like.
I'm bossy/I'm the first girl to scream on a track
