Bey alone would have not been able to compete with Monica, Brandy and Aaliyah...
she did though
tbh she went solo around the time those 3 were at their best artistically
Monica in 03 with So Gone
Full Moon was 1 year prior and Aaliyah's after death hype was still crazy
It's not like in the group ppl looked at them as just a group
Y'all stay complaining about Bey being the focus, but now wanna backtrack
and act like it was a group focus and no one paid her directly any attention

Brandy was pregnant and laid low and Monica had become an R&B only singer, she had no crossover appeal or desire. Bey's only competition as far as pop/R&B were Mya and Ashanti. And she crushed them.

R&B was still mainstream in 03. Monica showed up to the VMAs with that pitbull on a leash
and Bran showed up the year before with her tits out, she didn't lay low until after Sy'Rai was born
these aren't valid arguments

A story of the lead singer of the group becoming an even bigger solo artist is just a better a story.

There are only a few that have done it and all of them are legends.

This is why I never got the theory that DC was always just a vehicle in Matthew's master plan for Bee's rise to solo superstardom. There wasn't much precedent for girl group members turned solo superstars back then for him to place all of his eggs in that basket, I mean there was Diana...who else?

Their very first single literally proclaims them as the "young Supremes" bey was supposed to be the Diana

All that line means is that Wyclef thought of them as  a young Supremes. If it were the original plan it was  a much bigger gamble than just launching her solo because the Diana story is very rare. And unlike Bee Diana was the weakest vocalist of the Supremes with and unconventional look, she needed the group to get her foot in.

She wouldn't have made it in the Bran Monica Aaliyah world. Her pops followed the MJ and Diana Ross formula plain and simple. Think dat was the plan from the jump. How is she da  "motha" of da group if she's allegedly the youngest?

She was never the youngest. Latavia was. And they were all 4 Born in 1981.
No idea about THE obviously older Michelle.

And lol @ mj/Diana  formula as if it's an easy feat. For every Bey N Justin there's a nick carter and tboz / coko and latocha Scott who failed.

Very true. Ppl try to act like Bey became the "it" black girl after going solo in 2003, truth is she was the "it"  and most talked about Pop/R&B girl pretty much from 2000 onward, that's she was hot enough to get a Loreal contract, a Pepsi deal, roles in Carmen, Austin Powers, and The Fighting Temptation as well before DIL ever hit shelves.

If you can use a group to launch a solo career Nicole scherzinger and whorebey allday would've happened.  :sobusyjetsetter:

Being in Destiny's Child helped her as a performer
If Bey came out solo in 1997  :dead: it would have been a flop
Her voice was MESS then, her country ass accent, she was mediocre and cute in 97'.
But at the same time better than everyone in her group

Bey progressed over the years in Destiny's Child, in every aspect.
It took her a good 5 years to become the "Beyonc?" solo artist and performer we see today.

Not Carmen  :dead:

Hey the movie wasn't a masterpiece but it was heavily hyped and promoted on MTV back then, and it was a big sucess ratings wise.

Where's the rule that you have to come out the gate swinging?
Janet had 2 flop albums before she found herself and what works for her.
