This sounds dumb to me
let ppl wear stuff how they want. As long as they aren't burning it
or anything like that, just be glad ppl are embracing the culture of their ancestors

I think it is unfair to accuse black Americans of cultural appropriation. They are in a unique situation and it is not their fault. Is it cultural appropriation if whites do a St. Patrick's Day mess out or perch in Paris fashions.

The power paradigm is a different one. African Americans do not stand to benefit differently from Africans and do not escape stigma, because they basically look the same. And black Americans do not systemically oppress Africans.

I think its cool to honor our heritage but its a different story when u start playing dress up.

UNless you've done extensive research and know exactly what you're wearing stands for. And even still........it's about respect for culture.

i would never walk around like im str8 from africa or an indian reservation somewhere. at the end of the day we have our own culture and upbringing to be proud of.

but its always good to see ppl taking pride in Africa. i can see why some could be offended though.

This is such bullshit, she need to get a life!

I have a closet full of African clothes, made for me in Africa by the sister of my close friend because she is a seamtress in Cameroon, her mother was seamtress, they have been doing this for years and years. She did not lecture me on the history of the clothes, explain the orgin, the tribal marks etc, but she did want to give a part of their culture to me and I looked good in it. I went to an African wedding once and heard later that some of the people made comments about me wearing a traditional African outfit. Well where else am I going to wear this?  :dead:  The people in African loved to see me in the same outfit, sent me back with so much clothes, even for my sisters and nephews. Africans in America are a very judgemental group of people, and are very judgemental of African Americans, even though most have spent their entires lives wanting to be us, wanting to be a black person living in America, the irony.

People need to shut the fuck up. Better to wear than to not be worn at all. As long as they pay homage, let them be trendy.

I mean, the only reason I have ambivalent feelings about this is because some people may not be trying to be trendy. They may genuinely be trying to support their African roots in a way that is more practical.

Otherwise, valid points. Ultimately people have to respect others cultures. If someone belonging to a culture postulates that others are appropriating or dishonoring said culture, I can't debate that.
