I went straight to RIAA to confirm that they are definitely "sales" oriented, Laz. You were wrong in saying that they wouldn't fall under a "sales" category.

There's not much more to it.

Technically they're "shipment" oriented though
Really? Here's how they describe their mission -

Are trying to debate terminology tho? dddd coz I mean
they can scream "sales!" all day long
but if they are literally saying (within the link I might add)

Then we can conclude that they determine "sales" based off shipments.

Nicki shipped 1 million albums but only sold 700k copies.
Let's use common sense :plzstop:

We know they track shipments.

Exactly, doesn't mean the artist SOLD what they shipped, just means they SHIPPED that amount.
Billboard/SoundScan records how much they've SOLD, RIAA records have much they've shipped.

Usher back in 2012 finally SOLD  10 million copies of Confessions, but he got a diamond plaque for it years prior.
and look what they used as it's source?

Usher's 2004 "Confessions" album hits a milestone sales achievement this week, surpassing 10 million in U.S. sales according to Nielsen SoundScan

But RIAA gave him a Diamond plaque even though he didn't

SHIP doesn't equal SALE

We know they track shipments - but they are generally sales oriented.

He moved to correct what I said by saying "No they are NOT sales oriented - they are shipment oriented."

That's not true. Maybe if he said both, I would have paid it no mind. But to say they aren't sales oriented doesn't make sense to me.
Every article and receipt we've pulled from the site has included their focus on sales.

That's why I prefaced my post with "technically"

because everyone is in here debating what "sales" are in RIAA's eyes

A TRUE sales tally would be for example:

Nicki has sold 781,942 copies thus far

When what RIAA has already said is that they base their "sales" off shipments

which is why you only see hard numbers  such ass 500,000 1,000,000 etc

So they technically only track "shipments" for their sales.

Which--they said in the lank a bit

Off topic but did anyone else notice that Tracy Chapman is higher on this list than Beyonce' ... I did.. And I also noticed a ton of you saying the other day that she is/was a no one until she sued Nicki Minaj. You all were so far off! I'm glad to see this proof

:-D

And I think context is important here as well - it seems as if some of you feel me saying that RIAA is sales focused was my way of defending Nicki's numbers.

I was just speaking in regards to "sales" conversations we've had on here before.

My intent wasn't to speak on their practices, procedures, criteria, shipments, etc. I never got into all of that. I strictly stuck to "certifications". The title of the thread speaks to the number of certifications Nicki has received. Not the number of sales she's actually gotten.

I realize that a platinum album could very well have sold 800K copies in reality. I think we all know that.

Then why'd u say this?
