Songs that were not physically released (CD, hard copy) could not chart at the time -- except on Airplay charts --- Prior to December 1998.

It's the reason why TOP OF THE WORLD (Brandy) never charted on the Hot 100 either.

But Aaliyah ultimately peaked at #1 (Hot 100) with just airplay alone in 2000... after the rule changed.

Record labels were ok with singles not charting ... because they wanted album sales instead >>>

And if you look back... ARE YOU THAT SOMEBODY barely charted (#21), because it peaked its airplay during the change (Dec 1998)...  Prior to the change, it wasn't charting (on the Hot 100). It could have easily been a Top 10 hit for her.

It appears that he may have wanted album sales, instead.
Which are more lucrative than singles.

Um yeah. A sale is a sale especially back then as these singles weren't going for 0.99. Most definitely could've capitalized.

But why not both?

He did make a lot of money, though.  If people wanted Try Again, they had to buy the whole album soundtrack.  :dead:

He saw what AYTS did for the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack.

Barry and Blackground was horrible for a lot of artists Aaliyah, Tank, Jojo, Toni etc
It?s no surprise they slacked on getting physical singles for Aaliyah to chart
It probably had a cost that they wanted to avoid

It does show how powerful RADIO AIRPLAY can be, tho.
Especially back then.
