Let me school y'all for a quick minute. Contrary to what many in the public think, it's judges, not juries, that almost always determine sentencing for a convicted criminal defendant. It's pretty common for the judge to tell the jury not to consider punishment when determining whether a criminal defendant is guilty or not guilty.


So why were the jury given this power in this case?

It was a state case and Texas has a law where juries can decide sentencing, if requested. Her legal team ask for the jury to do the sentencing when they xame back with the not guilty verdict.
