I've been so busy on the spiritual and professional side that I haven't had much time to dive into my mess the way I want to.
But some things I really wanna know are :
How do you know if you're creole / Melungeon etc
What does it come up as n your DNA
Where does Cherokee show up in your DNA AND HOW
Because I'm seeing old photos and I think it's time for some mess
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o64/AllStar951/1674878_zps13029264.gif)
I have that feeling as well.
Theres alot of he say she say for some reason about the races of some of the people in my family:
My Maternal great grandmother has some weird looking people in her family im sorry sddsdsd
like they dont look fully black to me. but they are darker i guess you'd say.
I dont know their maiden names or how that whole trail goes because I think her married last name is davis. my great grandfather (her husband) was Irish they say..or half irish
he was something because I see it in my grandfather and his NOSE omg he pass that mess down to all of us :plzstop:
but i really wanna trace them and see what they really are and how everything played out. Especially on my grandmas side.
On my father's side he showed me his grandmother who was a black woman but then a grandfather that they said cherokee indian. You never know and i never wanna assume especially with the stigma of blacks and being indian :dead:
i really wanna get down to the bottom of all this.
and then of course my Japanese side has always been a huge part of my life. But i wanna get to know ALL of me like you were saying.
Like i wanna go to Ghana, Nigeria etc and feel the presence of my ancestors and things.
I know it will all be rewarding but it seems like it takes ALOT of work :dead:
the few things i know:
On the left is my great grandmother and her family
her son (my grandpa is on the right) thats where they got the last name davis. The Davis' i met on Ancestry are either black like me or white; is weird sdsddssd
BUt i dont know my Grandmother's maiden name mess

My advice is to start with what you know first, any clues that your family can give you.
Sometimes the whole "picture" thing can be a kii kii.
Example: "Ohhhh if you see my great great great grandmother and look at her hair and bone structure you can CLEARLY tell she was Indian :wellheythere: "
but sometimes they can be clues. that picture I posted had been in our livingroom since I was a child. but my grandmother didn't know the story. now she does :stressed: This is why I am claiming it so proudly because this isn't a story my grandmother already knew and decided to discard and ignore.
it's a story she didn't know and couldn't tell us. but I found a big chunk of my family's history and identity. why NOT claim that? :uhh:
use the stories pictures etc as clues and work from there. contact ur cousin matches as well.
lemme know if u need help :stressed:
my grandparents are sooooooo not texters or callers so i have to wait til im home to visit to ask these kinds of questions of names and things.
i cant wait.
and my parents dont know nor really care tbh :plzstop:
my mom is kinda interested but my dad, not so much
but i agree I find that there's alot missing or just not really talked about that i wanna find out and celebrate regardless of what it is because it makes me who i am ya know

If you feel there could be a Native connection, ask the names of the people in your dad's family that he said were Indian. It's quite simple -- usually natives had weird names. My grandmother's mother's name was Chief. Uncle was Badger, etc etc.
But
BUT sometimes Natives can have regular names too. My great grandmother's sister name was Judie. lol :plzstop: :plzstop: so another thing would be to check to see if they lived in a Native settlement area.
Natives settled in areas and ALWAYS stuck together. so if your ancestors are far from areas that Natives called home, and on top of that they don't have native names or other signs of Native culture, they may not have been native.
I think Native mess is a bit easier to confirm in that sense. :receipts:
i wanna say he did have a eird indian mess from what my grandmother said but i cant remember dsdssdsd
i need to ask her again
So Ancestry finally sent me my 10 links to download my raw DNA files and all them bitches are expired.
You know what.

it's not uncommon for us to have white cousin matches as AA's.
You have to remember that we have links to white people through previous intermarriage, or other stories that are a bit less savory/delightful. (slave rape)
Your great grandmother is gorgeous. I can see u in all of your family, that picture you posted of your great grandfather, I can definitely see you in him. He's gorgeous and he does give an Indian mess.
But we have to be careful when we assume based on features. A lot of people may see a brown skinned/dark skinned person with curly/wavy hair and a strong bone structure automatically think "oh they got Indian in their family" when the story could be more than that or something different.
That's the biggest thing I've learned. Definitely explore family stories but keep your mind OPEN. I mean that. The LAST place I would have looked is Haiti to uncover my family's roots.
I was so fixated on great grandma Chief that I thought I found all the answers I needed. But it's her husband who I look more like. :stressed:
I haven't seen his picture but he had to be the "stereotypical" Melungeon. He's listed as "White" on some documents I found (including the marriage cert below) even though he was not White. which tells me a lot about his appearance.

DNA is proving that a lot of our heritage lies in West Central Africa.
It's in line with slave voyage records.
62K Central Africans were sent to North America, while 793K were sent to the Caribbean.

:butwait!:
Cameroon/Congo is a very consistent marker for people of Haitian descent. Aligning with what's documented. :roflmao:
Yeah, so you are African. Original Haitians are Ta?no, luv.
I sent you the link which explained the history of black people in Haiti luv. I know when Haiti came to be.
The point is African American just like Black Haitian is a new found identity and none of the "original" tribes to go back to.

Also, diving closer into slave voyage records of Haiti specifically (listed as its original name, Saint Domingue in the chart below)
The largest amount of its African population came from Central Africa. :justabit: :justabit:
By a landslide of 46%. With Bight of Benin coming in second way down at 24% Every other area of Africa was bits and pieces.
:receipts:
This graphic basically shows the vast majority are from West Africa lol They all came from the same damn coast. Benin bight, Cameroon, Biafra, Guinea all West Africa.
While Haitians themselves probably look for their true ancestry, it is funny that other people stop there and think they got it.
I'm so curious why I have 4% Senegal and my mom has 1%.
The only issue is, yeah some of the Dumas gorls were "of color", but at the end of the day, the name is French, and they were subordinate to white people.

One more receipt. :justabit: A personal one.
Months ago, before I even knew of my connection to Haiti....
I had my DNA results analyzed by Fonte Felipe, creator of "Tracing African Roots"
and here is his analysis.
QuoteHi Herbert, these are my thoughts on your results, remember it's just my 2 cents wink. Your Ivory Coast/Ghana proportion is impressive and nearly one half of your African breakdown (36/81=44%). It's twice as high as the average i found for 350 AA's (19,5%) and actually only 13 other AA results i've seen scored higher for this region (proportionally speaking). So this is definitely a region worthy of exploring further to get a better grip on your African background. It's good to keep in mind that besides origins from firstmost Ghana and then Ivory Coast this category could also be suggestive of origins from Liberia and even (southern) Sierra Leone. Judging from the results of actual persons from those countries. (see also African results).
Your Cameroon/Congo score (18%) is also significant but much more in line with what seems to be common among AA's and especially from the Carolina's and Georgia. This region is ambigious as it might point towards origins from both the Bight of Biafra and Central Africa. Given that you also score a fair amount of Southeastern Bantu while your Nigerian contribution is rather small it's tempting to assume your Cameroon/Congo combines with SE Bantu and generally might point towards Central African origins in your case. However other options might still also be valid!
Looking more closely at your SE Bantu score (13%), it's clearly above the average i have found for 350 AA's. It makes up 16% (13/81) of your total African breakdown, while the average would be about 6,5%. It's good to keep in mind though that averages hide a great deal of variation around the mean. I have seen about 35 other AA's score higher SE Bantu proportions than yourself, while about 133 AA's had higher SE Bantu proportions than the average of 6,5%. This region has very wideranging potential implications across southern and eastern parts of Africa. We will have to wait for an update of Ancestry's referencepanel, involving heavier sampling from Angola and Mozambique, to get a clearer picture.
I find this category nonetheless very intriguing, my personal take on any possible interpretation is to go by whatever's been documented on the African origins for whichever nationality the person who's taking the test belongs to. In the case of AA's i therefore believe that a Central African (northern Angola & interior of Congo) explanation seems to be most plausible in a majority of cases (of course there's always individual variation). Because judging from the slave trade records this region supplied about 25% of all captives to the US while the share of Mozambique/Madagascar was no more than 2%. While it's true that the Portuguese were heavily present in this area, starting from the late 1600's they were mostly confined to Angola in the area around the capital Luanda and places to the south of it (Benguela). The captives they brought over to the Americas were destined almost exclusively towards Brazil in the 1700's/1800's while during earlier centuries (1500's/1600's) also other parts of Latin America received many of these captives. Because of incidental pirate attacks on Portuguese slave ships a small number of Angolans also ended up in the US in the late 1600's. Around the river Congo, near northern Angola, it was actually the Dutch, French, English and later on even American based slave traders who were predominant. This place centered around the kingdom of Loango had many interior connections, perhaps reaching as far as Zambia even. So i imagine any Southeastern Bantu scores among AA's and also West Indians (they also can score noticeable SE Bantu scores upto around 20%, even when it's more exceptional), might still be originating from this disembarkation region.
:receipts:
Again, Central Africa is consistent among those of Haitian descent. :justabit:

I said Haitians are basically West Africans and your own figure showed that. All the damn regions refer back to West Africa. I am sure some from Central Africa (the Western part lol) got mixed up in the shuffle but that is neither here or there, it is all from the same damn coast.
It was not really about West or Central African, as those are just fairly arbitrary categories, but about the fact that when you really want to go back to ANCESTRY, Haiti is irrelevant. Just like a result that would give you some mess like Alabama... That is a pit stop, but not the source.

Glen, do you know ALL 4 of your grandparents?
As in who they were and how they look?
Not necessarily a deep connection with them but basic information?
Are there any one of the 4 you know little to nothing about?
The only one I know little to nothing about is my dad's father because he left when my father was young. My grandparents on my mother's side were very light skinned with kinky hair. My great grand parents lived next door so I got to spend a lot of time with them. I think my Nanny (great-grandmother) had some Asian in her and my great-grandfather I'm not sure about. He was brown-skinned but on the lighter side.
My grandmother on my dad's side is brown skinned. I took my color from my dad's side of the family.

And the Afro Carribbean result is intriguing to me as well
usually a lot of Carribbean people return "Benin/Togo" as their top result. Not too many AA's.
for a lot of AA's, Benin Togo is further down the list. doesn't sound like a big deal but it is. it's comparing your results to different groups of people.
that's why I got excited when I saw your results.
there's something edgy brewing in your family. :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:

I encourage you to find out more about this ancestry Glen bvy
all of it, really. Talk to mom. wait...didn't you test her too? upload her mess to GEDMatch
that would be even better
Yaasssss. She was 38% European. I'll talk to her asap. I'll be seeing her soon.

Yeah I literally just revisited her results.
She came back damn near biracial.
actually many biracial people get results like hers. it's never a perfect 50/50
that's not how DNA operates.
its usually a bit more leaning to the european or african side.
(https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/v/t1.0-0/s526x395/12936577_10156893609125601_3440224894542253373_n.jpg?oh=77448f89fbb95cd1102e626971bf6e25&oe=57BAC02C)
This makes perfect sense. its definitely from your mom's side. your guess was right.
Ancestry's category of "Europe West" includes Germany.
http://dna.ancestry.com/ethnicity/europe-west
and the other categories under her European mess could simply be overlapping.
great britian is right next to "europe west".
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Omggggg :plzstop: :plzstop:

also interesting, I think you got your SE Bantu readings from her as well.
it's not usual that AA's score SE Bantu in high amounts like that, especially as the second result.
what were her trace regions in africa?
I don't know what her trace regions were. I'm trying to find it on Ancestry, but I can't. :plzstop: :plzstop:

And I do think somewhere in the back of my mind, I didn't want to claim Cherokee, because I mean, EVERYONE does. :dead: :dead: With not a receipt in sight. It's a joke now anytime someone says they're of Cherokee descent.
So I think that immediately when my grandmother said that her mother said we are Cherokee, it was like...Granny, lets find out the TRUTH. :traciandchelle: There was no doubt based on the evidence that my family has quite immediate Native ties, but it was like I was set out looking for evidence that we were something other than Cherokee. :plzstop: :plzstop:
I just didn't believe it. But that again goes back to the "joke" surrounding anyone who claims it. Even if it is my great grandmother. :bvy:
