I don't think I've ever seen this many of the movies nominated. Viggo was very good in captain fantastic. I just watched Arrival and Hidden figures the other day, both very good. Moonlight was amazing. Fences was VERY good, viola got that in the bag. I thought LaLa Land was really good and i think emma and Ryan will probably both walk away with theirs. Ava needs to win for 13th. It was just a very good yr in movies
I watched loving while i was in L.A. and :overit:
Don't know why Ruth is getting all this love, luv her tho
Mahershala Ali, Moonlight

Surprised to see Nocturnal Animals only has one nod
YES :gorlonfire:
Why didn't Viola get a lead actress mess?
Viola Davis

Viola is gonna win..
It's nice to see all this pure talent in the mix
Wow
I didn't even realise 13th and I Am Not Your Negro were nominated too. Looks like Hollywood listened to the #OscarsSoWhite backlash from last year. Yes, Trump nah stop we :stressed:

No way they were gonna nominate Denzel and Viola.

lol I think its because eventhough she is the only woman her role was moreso supporting
but technically if we go by lines and screentime
it should count as lead
to me denzel was lead and viola was supporting
but since they were the main characters they both can be leads iono
She should've been nominated for lead. She carried the latter part of the film, imo.

I know Denzel was nominated for "Flight" and "Malcom X" and lost those. I can't remember if he's had more noms than that, outside of his wins.
Boris kodjoe explained on FB that Viola is up for supporting because the film's team believed she had better chances in that category... shoulda went with best actress still imo
And Lew is right about Viola in Fences. I saw it and she def was the supporting to Denzel's lead. Just cause she was the only prominent female in the picture doesn't mean she was a lead. Either way, I think it's hers to lose.
Oh and Kerry is NEVER winning an Oscar! Just wanted to remind everyone...

Yea i asked my friend and this is what he said. I knew it wasn't a "COLOR" thing but outsode of that i didn't know why. I asked myself the same question when she won the golden globe and essentially it sounds like its what the studio does to ensure her the best chance of winning

This is also what i was thinking. Just because an actress is the most prominent in the film doesn't mean that she's LEAD actress. In certain movies it can be like EVERYONE is support for one actor
Davis is billed and promoted as a Lead Actress in Fences and probably also payed as one. It's not rly about how much you contribute but how you are billed. If the song says Eminem feat. Rihanna, it doesn't matter who has the most (prominent) parts in the song.
Well apparently not because she's supporting actress, so there u go.

the reason shes more likeky to win supporting is because they are more lenient to Blacks
no one since Halle has won LEAD actress, but
Mo'Nique, J Hud, Octavia, Whoopi, Lupita etc can grab supporting
Or maybe they have gauged the reaction and know who they are leaning towards for lead actress and know that viola has better chances in supporting. Sorry but i dont buy this color thing. They don't HAVE to give anyone an award, hell even a nomination for that matter. :dead:

Viola may have been a lead actress but the studio decides which category they submit the actors under. Being submitted as supporting is strategic because it gives her a better shot at winning.

no one disagreed with that
however you're not addressing WHY shes more likely to win
which is because its the lesser award and shes Black
An Oscar is an Oscar :dead:
No one says "won an Oscar......but OH only supporting" thats stupid :kii:
QuoteA performance by an actor or actress in any role shall be eligible for nomination either for the leading
role or supporting role categories. If, however, all the dialogue has been dubbed by another actor,
the performance shall not be eligible for award consideration. Singing that is dubbed will not affect
the performer?s eligibility unless it constitutes the entire performance. The determination as to
whether a role is a leading or supporting role shall be made individually by members of the branch at
the time of balloting.
so its just coincidence that more Black ppl get the NON lead award?
if every award is the same, then there wouldnt need to be a stategy on submitting to ensure a win

i do think you are right and i do think the subcatagories are to only give more people a chance to win and a lane of their own
but there is a pattern of blacks getting supporting role oscars which could only mean we need more leading roles
but with fences it was a leading role but due to the stigma they are submitting it as supporting to i guess soften the blow so this girl can finally get her just due
its not quite right
but if she wins
the oscar would be an oscar

We already agreed that its strategy to give the the actor the best chance at winning. Based on who else is being buzzed about, what ur performance was, etc they submit u accordingly. Marisa didn't have a leading actress performance, other actresses are more buzzed about than viola to win, so WHATEVER the reason, they put u where they feel like u have the best odds. This has nothing to do with the caliber of the award. Uve literally never heard anyone break down what made someone an Oscar winner, just that they ARE one

So basically a black actress IS nominated in lead actress and putting viola in supporting actress essentially clinches her the win, strategic thru n thru. whites love to give it to africans for some reason
it snubs blacks while still giving them the non racist appeal

Basically, having Viola "strategically" submitted in a non lead category for an ensured win proves that the Lead category

I dont see how it ensures a win shes been in that category before
If they want to give it to any of those others once they sniff what they were trying to do hey

her character was a more educated version of her character in the help they love it
Taraji will have another film
Octavia is being used to snub the others imo
but shes still good

yes, she did her job. But I don't think it was anything extraordinary. If anyone should have been nominated it should have been Taraji. And even she wasn't OMG!

Viola should have been in the lead category though. Her performance was flawless. I haven't seen ANY of the Best Supporting Actresses performances though. I gotta get on that.

Taraji is a lot more diverse as an actor to me
and viola could improve
her peers are a lot more diverse as well
so...
nehoo I was moved a lot more by her performance in fences
I cried in both movies tho so I was moved
but viola had me feeling like troy was my daddy
im just gonna put this out there
octavias performances in the help as well as hf wasn't ocsar worthy (golden globe and soul train maybe)
dunno why they tried to pump ha up but its always used as a divisive ploy
on one hand we know the win is bogus
on the other we are excited somebody black won
meanwhile the star that really captivated audiences (viola in the help and taraji in hf ) get snubbed
but sis has been an unknown in films for years giving the same grandmotherly vibes in all her roles
and while her character was good in the help it definitely wasn't a breakout role for her
she acts like that all the time thats what shes casted for
same with jhud getting her oscar and giving terrible acting performance right after
but that was a big fuck you to beyonce thinking shes gonna treat the oscars like the grammys and rack up
but she didnt deserve it either
but were happy the film walked away with an oscar period
and of course bey haters loved it lol
but again divicive
in closing
octavias nothing special
G

Rly cus this is like the first time she's stepped out of her ghetto and/or damsel in distress roles
but that adds to her resume it doest detract from it
but like most ppul they get type casted
shes proven shes more than that though
and u havent seen her works if your basing her career off of empire babyboy and no good deed
shes done alot more than violas mammy and serious snot lady routines
when we discuss actors like jhonny depp and meryl streep
when you look at their works u see how diverse it is and how far they can go
animations musicals drama comedy voice work action .....uuuuu nammmmmee eht
then you will see taraji fits the bill a bit more than viola in that respect
if meryl didnt step out and do roles like mama mia august osage county or the devil wears prada
and she repeatedly did roles like doubt she would be great but she would be the white viola lol
But yea octavia didn't deserve this one and im not clapping tbh. The help i saw and understood why she would get recognized.
Oh so viola is the only black female with 3 oscar nominations. That don't make no damn sense :dead:
http://thatgrapejuice.net/entertainment/viola-davis-sets-new-historical-oscar-record/
It's a kii that usually great (dark skin) black actress have to be some unconventional type beauty with edgy daring looks and roles, while white Oscar winners get to be pretty barbies. They wouldn't dare let Gabrielle Union touch a nomination.
Iono why yall give all these bullshit ass theories. Meryl streep is oscar queen and looks like a damn HORSE! Halle Berry won best actress and she's pretty much a model. Dorothy Dandridge, Diahann Carol, taraji, etc. Gabby has yet to deliver an Oscar worthy performance and that's the crux of her problem, not her beauty
No shade to Gab, but playing an uppity bish ain't getting her an Oscar anytime soon.
Love Mary Jane though <3

I would love to see our black actresses in some different roles tho. I think thats probably why they look more homely if anything, the roles theyre recognized for. Anytime they get a nod is always some SLAVE mess. The "pretty" black actresses arent sought after for those roles. That's why the Charlize and Angelina Jolies can get nominated more. They have more opportunities and the roles variate

But my gripe is for every black actor we say has to step it up inorder to win there is a white one at the same level who has won or been nominated
So i dont think its based on performances soley
