Reed Hastings, the Netflix CEO, said that he has no interest in adding inclusion riders into contracts to get cast and crews more diverse.
After Frances McDormand?s influential speech about ?inclusion riders? being added into Hollywood contracts, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings responds directly by saying he and the company have no interest in doing such a thing.
?We?re not so big on doing everything through agreements,? said Reed Hastings at a press meeting inside his office. ?We?re trying to do things creatively.? Instead of using the inclusion rider as hoped for by the elites in Hollywood, Hastings would rather his staff speak with filmmakers about how many women and people of color are working on the project before shooting begins. ?That?s how we look at it,? he said.
An ?inclusion rider,? for those not in the know, is a sentence included in a contract where actors and actresses can require hiring of a diverse cast and crew. Netflix, a billion-dollar company with 117 million subscribers, plays an increasingly influential role in Hollywood. For them to take a stance against the inclusion of such language in a contract is interesting to say the least. With production on shows and movies increasingly be led by black-and-brown creatives on Netflix, the company even signed a deal with Shonda Rhimes, who has built an empire of black-themed TV shows.
Maybe this decision stems from the Netflix board, which consists of mainly white men and a few white women. Blacks only make up 4% of staff and leadership, while Latinos comprise 6% of staff and 5% of leadership. ?Suffice to say, you won?t find Netflix on the Black Enterprise ?50 Best Companies for Diversity? list, noted the popular entrepreneurial magazine recently.

We know Hollywood DEFINITELY has a long way to go in the inclusion department and obviously NetFlix needs to make some changes, but we can?t run around calling everyone racist or even hinting at it, really.
You better make sure you have the bold hard facts to back up those statements when you do, because NetFlix has done nothing but impress me with all of their black content and the freedom they?ve given those same black producers and writers like Ava DuVernay and Lena Waithe to do their own thing.
Now if this were a case of NetFlix simply giving us ?black shows? here and there and paying us a nice little chunk while their white creators and writers continue to run the proverbial show, then I?d have an issue.
That isn?t the case here. Black writers and producers are doing their fuckin THING over at NetFlix and have even left the biggest conglomerate out there in Disney/ABC to do so.

We're so worried about Netflix being inclusive but in the next breath will call networks actually designed to include us "EBT" or call the ceremonies "nigger awards", etc.
I don't get it.
Speaking personally, I hate the BET awards because I think they only support one type of black person. I watch all the time and tbh The BET awards still end up being one of the better award shows of the year, but I wish they showed more diversity in blackness instead of just one version.
