Wtf is "nappy hair"?
:plzstop:
Is that even real thing?
:omgwatshappening:
I recently thought about how as a child I'd always hear jokes about nappy hair (pretty much used towards anyone not mixed or sporting 'baby hairs') and I was always just like woo yeah haha. Niggers.
But I didn't get it?
:udontlookok:
Because my family wasn't full of weird fucked up black people ( Well not in that sense Lolz) do it wasn't used in my home life. Just school.
Anywho. As an adult all I see is "normal" black hair from black people. All types of textures and types and colors and now I'm like "OMG, all those coons I went to school with were just brainwashed" :diddraispoot:
So, is it just that the word has a negative connotation to it? Because this is what Google brings up when I search nappy hair:
All I see is normalcy.
:everythingok:
Guh, wut?
:nowgorl:
jkngggg
Well most of the blacks at my school had fades, relaxers, and weaves so anything "natural" was considered Nappy unless it was soft wavy curls.
Why the fuck did I scroll down and see Blue
U kn wh
And now I'm even more offended Nicki used it in her song
:mmywheresddy:
Not sure I understand the thread exactly.
Nappy hair is just very kinky, coarse hair.
Nappy hair is a word used to described kinky hair. Kinky hair is actually a real thing, and a real category. It's the negative connotations that we attach to these descriptions or categories that make them a "bad thing".
e.g. "You nappy headed bitch." I don't like the word "nappy" (only because I know how many people use that word), and I'd never use it to describe someone else's head. It's quite offensive. Although I have seen people use it with pride. There are many people trying to REVERSE the negative feelings toward the name. And infuse it with pride and love.
The ones who are able to grow a proper Afro have nappy hair. The perfect hedge looking ones, no the ones where you can see curls.

Your hair, to me at least, is nappy or kinky, when you can't just comb it or when you can't change your hair style by simply adding water. You can literally cut it like a hedge and make shapes. That is nappy hair.
Isn't nappy hair very course and kinky hair? Like the type of hair you can't comb through easily. That's what I thought it meant at least.

A lot of white people LOVE African beauty.
My dad's side of the family are damn near fully African blood.
My cousins appearance are clear examples, nice dark skin, kinky hair...
And I always wondered why the hell they always went with these white women :uhh:
ALWAYS.
Never fails :usureuok: I thought they discriminated against their own kind or something.
But then it clicked. These white women will worship the African ground they walk on
they're sexy, gorgeous, handsome, exotic to these women.
while their own women are passing them over cuz they don't think they'll give their baby some "good hair".

When has she ever been regarded as such? :dead:
She literally cooned her way to the top of the charts.

That is just unkempt hair. I don't think people would ever call Chilli's hair nappy thought regardless of how "messy" it is.
and this is why i cringe when i see people LATHERINg their head in harmful chemicals just to achieve a "look". its not worth it.
i don't even really like the idea of straightening hair..hot combs and mess... but i do understand with proper caution and moderation its not as harmful as the chemical straightening and mess.
at the end of the day, we only get ONE head of natural hair. once u damage it beyond repair, it's gone. no do overs. and u walk around BALD headed for the rest of ur life :udontlookok: I think if people remembered that they'd slow down on the harmful stuff a little more.

Well actually that sounds more plausible.
Solange's hair is nappier than Beyonc?.
Word nappy in a context. But in general, I wouldn't even classify Solange's hair as "nappy", because she has clear curls as well.

True.
This all ties into the negative connotations. Nappy=bad hair to many people. Period.
So if something looks unsavory on top of your head, it's "nappy".

So if Chilli got up outta bed and wouldn't touch her hair, then people would call it nappy in the States. Then I guess it does have different meanings/definitions in different regions. Cause I would never use the word nappy, I would say unkempt or messy or frizzy maybe.

Siblings can definitely have different textures of hair.
This goes back to DNA's uneven and unpredictable distribution which switches up every time a new child is born, unless they are identical twins.
But is that Beyonce's hair, or a natural "looking" weave?
Because this would be nappy to me too but perfectly kempt.

I'm kinda biased in this entire discussion I suppose cuz u gorls know I'm in deep love with the whole natural mess.
I LOVE seeing our women proudly strutting across work and other environments with their natural manes.
This is one of them, I have the biggest crush on her LOL. Her hair is so big and beautiful.
And she's such a cutie pie on top of that.

So either it is messy/unkempt or kinky/very densely curled hair.
That's the problem with the word "nappy".
It's so subjective, and that's why I stray away from using it.
Kinky is pure definition, black and white.
Nappy has way too many "personal definitions" that are given to fit a scenario. Personally I just leave it out of my vocabulary, for that very reason. If you say it, you'll never know how it will be taken due to the varying beliefs of what it is.
