1) Melungeons were actually known for being darker skinned. And lighter as well. Something acknowledged to this very day:

2) Melungeons have roots in Africa. Why wouldn't anyone see Black features if that's truly their heritage.

3) there were no whipping posts. the Angolan Africans who created the Melungeon identity were all freeborn and independent thinkers.
