Some of these responses are... depressing.

I think you guys are coming from emotional place and trying to justify how your parents lashed you as a child. To say, what else can discipline a child is just You're a human being with a functioning brain. The brain is malleable and can easily adapt and adjust to situations. Pain doesn't fix anyone.

Yes, I was spanked as a child but I feel like had my mom just talked me she wouldn't have had to waste her energy. My dad on the other hand preferred to just talk to us. I think moms in general get emotional when it comes to raising their kids "right."

I have an aunt who does more than spankings and I can tell (based on convos with my mom) that it effects the kids mentally.

i got my ass beat. and i believe that it kept me from doing many dumb things... i would just be scared of the lashings my parents would give me once  they found out or if i got home. i think after middle school its kinda not worth it. cause children shld have their values instilled in them by then.

Well luckily my parents were sane and always wanted us to make the best decisions, promoted education, and actually showed us they loved us and cared. I think without those other factors as reinforcement it would be different.

I do feel like some parent's physically discipline before love and other things and that defeats the purpose

"Oh Timmy don't set your sisters hair on fire, go sit down for 3 minutes with no snacks"

You raise serial killers or manipulative narcissistic fcks that way

Children aren't developed, all this new age mess like letting them control their punishments and talking it out is a joke to them to an extent.

The purpose of a solid spanking is to deeply instill the lesson that poor choices create harmful consequences.

I think the KEY is to just be unpredictable. Im not saying give the children a surprise ambush lashing, but NO form of discipline should become routine. I dont care what it is.

Routines and predictability is what can make it all a running joke after a while. The punishments have to fit the crime, and, again, it depends on the human being you're raising and dealing with. Its all case by case

Even if im raising 3 kids, there's no way in the world im going to handle all three of them in the exact same way

that "my way or the highway" mentality is late and WEAK as hell. Parents like that are completely lazy

there has to be adjustments made on both ends when you see something just isn't quite working. it doesn't all have to be so extreme
