it's tricky but you should def see Africans and African Americans as separate people. Socially, I can see why we'd want to lump us all together, but culturally no. To me, accepting "Black" when you know otherwise is just subscribing to the White notion that we're all just niggers, you're all just Black. especially when this is coupled with "in their eyes..." Youre submitting to massa's viewpoint. You're doing yourself a disservice by accepting that and not representing/valuing/acknowledging your background. Why can a White person sport Irish, German, etc and be Irish or German..... but we can't be Dominican or whatever without one of US going "ch you're Black have a seat." It's very slave-like actually, that mentality. We're automatically jealous or threatened by one of us trying trying to embrace something "other." Don't get me wrong it's equally slave-like to embrace things when they don't really apply to you, to try to give special, exotic, whatever.

i remember growing up the girls were clamoring to find White/Indian/or even Mexican relatives

And that somehow made them prettier or more attractive than those of us who were just .... black

Coupled with the fact American history is littered with hints that "black" is bad (modern Christianity)

I remember visiting vacation bible school at like 8 and the teacher making the point that anything black was dark and ... evil

I kinda just shifted in my seat, but I felt bad lol

Over here American or maybe British is the best kind of black you can be. So many Africans will try and pass for American... By name, clothing etc.

my first true friend from college was Indian

I came from a small town, and I'm thinking he's black, everytime I see him we like "wassup nigga!"


so we go meet his family and his mom had a dot on her forehead, I was like
You're not black?


That threw me for a LOOP, but he was like .... we all black brother!
