But who takes the blame? Is it the record labels and marketing execs or the consumers that are not supporting black artists.

It's actually some of both...think about it...compare the number of white pop stars to major black stars who coexist...they have Ariana, Megan Trainor, Taylor, Katy, Gaga etc...

We have beyonce, Rihanna, and to a lesser extent Nicki Minaj. SZA and Cardi B are rising starlets but will they be able to compete with the pop girls?

Her statement is so true but it?s also an issue we have with ourselves. Brandy and Monica are a prime example ...  we as fans get so caught up in she?s better because of this or she?s better because of that, instead of supporting because they are different and both very good af at what they do. Do some research on the label merges that happened at the turn of the last decade and how most Urban divisions were cut with Urban staffs completely fired.  Leaving R&B artists on labels with employees who probably had never even heard of them.

Mixed with iHeart and Clear Channel doing business deals that forced many Urban stations into Rhythmic stations or to close altogether.  In addition to rules set behind the scenes at Billboard giving advantage to Pop radio and changing the R&B Chart to no longer reflect airplay .... thus eliminating R&B out of the charts which directly impacts award shows which directly impacts visibility which directly impacts sales.

Black people have been supporting and "doing our part" for years.  That's why Demi Lovato can sell only 20k more than Tamar but still EAT.  Because she has an industry literally backing her 100%.

I have every right to be angry because I spend my $10.84 every other week on a new release from mostly black artists, but looking at the paradigm holistically is problematic and I won?t pacify the Adele?s of the world for breaking off a Grammy for a Beyonc? because it?s really goddamn larger than that.

Whites are still the majority population, so that means their purchasing power extends further to support several leading pop acts simultaneously. That's why you can have several of them churning out hits, pushing units and labels respond accordingly to that with their financial backing. Black people unfortunately don't have in spades that same luxury.
