I agree with the original post, to an extent.  Most black people are dark-skinned, yet don't want to be considered such.

But we come in too many complexions to not be more descriptive than light or dark.  To whites, we're pretty much all dark.  Amongst ourselves, there are a ton of variations.


Let's say you're describing an unfamiliar black person.  Saying light or dark doesn't give enough description, so I can understand it on that basis.
