Jada Pinkett-Smith has officially declared she will not be attending, nor watching, the 2016 Oscars due to the #OscarsSoWhite movement.
?Is it time that people of color recognize how much power, influence, that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to be invited anywhere?? Jada said in the video. ?Maybe it?s time that we recognize that if we love and respect and acknowledge ourselves in the way in which we are asking others to do, that that is the place of true power.?
Spike Lee also just announced that he will not be in attendance at the event.

Where there AWESOME performances by a black actor last year? just because there were some roles played by black actors doesnt mean SOME have to be nominated for the sake of "diversity".
Its about the best performances. Seems like some people dont get this yet.
Where are the asian actors nominations?
the latin ones?

what i don't understand is all the strong african americans voices talking about self love and pride, yet the community don't honour their movie/music nights with as much reverence, rather they vehemently demand white recognition from white entertainment institutions. that is after all what the grammys and oscars are.
all ethnics get a look in, but are not who those institutions are catering to/for.

Speaking at the Focus premiere in London, the actor hit back at claims and said: "I didn't even think about that really, I can't say I feel negatively about it. I don't really think that it's too much of a problem."
Just last year he didn't see racism in the industry as a problem and now his wife is boycotting the Oscars? Yeah, him and Jada are full of shit.

I don't think it's fear. Some black people genuinely don't care about these issues, especially if it doesn't affect them directly. And especially when it has to do with entertainment/modeling, etc.
I mean, at the end of the day it's no one's human or civil right to have a modeling contract, or a blockbuster movie deal, or an Oscar. These industries are openly discriminatory and it's accepted. If you get into this business it kind of comes with the territory.
I'm all for rooting for change but let it be genuine, not just when you're having a temper tantrum cuz Massa didn't give you a cookie this time around.

And with Will, I can't really get mad. That Fag is as A list as you can get and has no problems booking a film. I can't blame him if the issue rarely crosses his mind. Although I'm sure he's more than aware.

Well, have you gone out marching about mistreatment against blacks in our communities? Did you step out and protest about the "stop and frisk" law that they passed years ago that clearly targeted minorities in NYC, which in turn would affect you when you went out your door as a person of color?
Or were you somewhere else praising Taylor Swift and enjoying yourself?
This is the difference I am referring to. Just because you opted not to take action doesn't mean you were scared.

So I changed my approach and used the other usual expression, at least on europe. "people of color" is used A LOT on media and tv. If u havent seen/read it yet, then you must start reading some newspapers or watching some News shows.

i don't think the music industry is really much of a black thing
it's a genre thing
if you look at the 90s-early 00s
the billboard was dominated by R&B, which allowed more black artists to thrive.
the climate just changed, as it always does.
Idk babe because the blacks are doing the pop mess and are still flopping. I mean look at Usher, Chris, now Rihanna, Ciara, Jason used to at least get one hit but

I agree on the lawrence complain, tho. This is just marketing, the Academy LOVES to award certain people over and over. thats the nature of many industries, music one included. No way Taylor Swiftz deserves all those grammies. Same with other artists.
But it is how it is.
but thts not how it should remains
if we want real change we rlly gotta do sumthin
tha cycle of holl'wood is nasty
run by racist billionaires..we gotta stop buyin their products
kick them OUT of business, if we break tha cycle, we break an era of intol'rance toward blck actors n actresses!
u ev' hear tha story of tha man & his pale?
he walked up four hills each day jus to fill it but wen he finish tha walk back down the four hills; his pale was always empty
he did this n repeated this cycle for 4 yrs and eventually died
kno why?
cuz he never bother to check the pale!
there was a hole in tha bottom of it
well now ..us blck ppl see tht hole & we aint let this mess go no more
tht story touch me n it should wake up blck ppl

black actors taking it personal once again
Where there AWESOME performances by a black actor last year? just because there were some roles played by black actors doesnt mean SOME have to be nominated for the sake of "diversity".
Its about the best performances. Seems like some people dont get this yet.
Where are the asian actors nominations?
the latin ones?
the spanish ones?
Stop being so damm sensitive, lol. "Blacks are sidelined" "blacks this" "blacks that" pleaaaaaaaaase, lol.
i actually agree, thats why i asked were there any really great performances by african americans or any african american movies that warranted a nod? Ride Along 2 isnt gonna fckn cut it
nice to see someone actually getting the point.
Some people take opinions as shade or non sense or something.
Halle has gotten an Oscar, Denzel has gotten one, Lupita another one. Will Smith has been nominated if Im not wrong.
on Tv, Kerry has been nominated, Viola has been nominated for both tv and movie roles...
I mean.... where is exactly the boycott? :dead: :dead: :dead:
Now tell me who was the last asian actor nominated. I dont even know if one recieved a nom in the last 2 decades. So if there is a real boycott is to asian industry, same with latin actors.
And I dont have to be black to understand this issue. :dead: Im hispanic, so hey, Im on the minority too.
:plea:
wow...three or four niggers won an Oscar over the span of nearly one hundred years! let's pack it up and go home, guys.
:uhh:
And tell Julie Chen and nem to rally up the troops if the lack of diversity bothers them. This is about an issue affecting OUR community.

Wait a minute Spike Lee got his honorary Oscars in November. Of course he can boycott now. He def should've been nominated this year. ^o)
with usher, you gotta remember where his true fanship lies. the r&b girls are not going up for his pop.
chris... is just chris.
ci... she more gives you an urban lean and slays when it's her time.
rih... just a bad era
jason... he does get pop hits and is doing well with earning a Top 10 each time he releases
And the fact of the matter is people don't care about asians until black people complain about their lack of representation.
Why people can stomp all over asians, but people (usually none asians) don't try to cape for them until black people are complaining about mistreatment.

& tha oth' two actresses had scheduling issues
jada was tha ver' las pick
this is common tho
mosta tha blck roles u see on cable tv shows r las thought or throw in's tht will later be killed

So there u have it, its not just a black thing guys. Many different actors suffer, not just one minority.

i hate this too

ugh
j
You keep giving this 'not all white people...' spiel in every thread...
because it's hurtful
it's not fair
to group a race into one box, nor is it fair to do it to any other race
it's hurtful, especially when not everyone feels that way
but forget it

not even
:dead:
perceptions can be so off.
my only stance is...
not because someone is not a particular race, does not mean that person does not share the same desire for equality and change.
it doesn't mean that a white person knows what it feels like to be black, and vice versa...
it just means, perceive and welcome a person by their character... not their race. it's not fair to anyone. black, white, etc.
i don't understand how my comments in here, could make you think that?
that's so annoying
the injustices that black people face is not only a black person's problem
IT IS ALL OF OUR FUCKING PROBLEM
:uhh:
it needs to be fucking addressed. period.
i'm getting angry now
fuck this

black actors taking it personal once again

TV shows are different altogether. They are not nominated for Academy Awards. While there may be some need for more diversity at The Emmys, it is The Academy Awards that is known to purposefully shut out people of color. For instance, this year Straight Out of Compton was nominated, but only for the 2 white screenwriters, instead of any of the other people working on the same movie who just happened to be black. It seems intentional...
You probably don't see it because you don't know how it goes being that you aren't from the US and aren't black.

They need to start by creating more iconic and interesting roles. And not copy Anglo/Caucasian mess and paint it brown. Not here for it.

QuoteWhen did this become such an important issue to you, after your husband was "snubbed" from the nominations ? Because we should have taken this attitude years ago. Our dignity has been diminished since Hattie McDaniel won the first Oscar as a black actress. It was at this time that we began a quest to seek the approval of the academy on our artistic accomplishments . How many of you powerful , superstar black actors and actresses attend the NAACP Image awards yearly to support other black entertainers? only when you are receiving a "special" acknowledgement. So instead of talking about it because you feel that your body of work deserved an academy award nomination from an institution that was not even created to honor blacks in the film industry, support the institutions that were created to not diminish your dignity but to celebrate it. Yes I'm sure you may donate thousands of dollars but come to the awards show EVERY year so we know it's real

Him supporting her physically (even IF he doesn't show up) and him supporting her perspective are two totally different things. Just because you're married to someone doesn't mean you become one entity...at least that's what I thought.

I honestly dont understand "color" artists complaining for lack of support to their music.
n
Ur fcking racist
:kii:
You dont get sense of humour I see. Rig made a reply to me complaining I said "black" actors.
So I changed my approach and used the other usual expression, at least on europe. "people of color" is used A LOT on media and tv. If u havent seen/read it yet, then you must start reading some newspapers or watching some News shows.
I don't know you
so why do you accuse of racist someone that you DONT KNOW?
:dead: :dead: :kii:
this board is funny sometimes :justabit:
you just called us blacks and colored
arent all of you calling yourself blacks?
how do you want me to call u? brown?
:dead: :dead: :dead: :dead: :dead: :dead: :dead: :dead: :dead: :dead:
Did you forget that BET means Black Entertainment Tv?
:wellheythere:
When you refer to people as blacks, it's taken offensively. A black person would be better.
Let me put it this way, it's equivalent to me saying "you wetbacks sure do love your TACOS"
wtf transpired in here

Holaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

The only reason your speaking up is because Will hasnt been nominated, because this shit has been happening for YEARS, why all of a sudden you give a fuck? :uhh:
People only cry "racism!" "Blacks work together!" When its convienient for them, just like when Nicki was crying over that vma snub.
The kicker though is that The smiths HAVE a movie production company yet they dont even give black actors work. So miss me with the sympathy card jada punk-ass smith
It doesn't really matter when or why tbh

Felt the same about the Nicki/Taylor thing. Yes, Nicki only became Sojourner Truth after she felt slighted but some valid points were made! White people getting rewarded for mediocrity. And its the 1950s on radio all over again. Hardly a nigga in sight on pop radio and white artist are being played heavily on urban radio too.

Will and Jada(especially her) have spoken out against injustice several times. They have an organization devoted to helping ppl within marginalized groups...but yeah she's just speaking out because her husband wasn't nominated lolz
that makes Will's comment about diversity last year, that much more troubling and confusing
She may be genuine, but will ...
Im just curious why everyone keeps mentioning Will when Jada is speaking for herself...?
well, I doubt Will is gonna stroll down the red carpet in spite of his own wife declaring war on the academy's racism but yea...I'm sure he was in the other wing of the mansion picking out his tux while Jada was recording this video.
Him supporting her physically (even IF he doesn't show up) and him supporting her perspective are two totally different things. Just because you're married to someone doesn't mean you become one entity...at least that's what I thought.
In the eyes of most people, and the "eyes of God" , marriage symbolizes two becoming one. So it's no surprise people expect spouses to uphold the beliefs of their other half. Do I think that is "right"? No. But there is some logic in these expectations, given the country's social (and even religious/spiritual) definition of marriage.
This is all a mess
All of it
hey bvy :stressed:

The entertainment/modeling industry is the only place where whites can be unapologetically prejudice and oppressive, without laws in place to stop them from doing so. No affirmative action, no Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. I doubt that's getting a drastic change anytime soon.
Unless the government sees the pressing need and importance of handing out more Oscars and catwalks to minorities. We just had a Black President in office who hasn't looked into it. So yeah. :dead:
Every human deserves equal opportunity for education, and to equally compete for jobs so they can survive in a money driven country. Otherwise they will suffer -- homelessness, etc.. This is why it's clear why these laws are needed, even though even THOSE rules are broken under the table.
There's absolutely nothing to stop these industries because it's based on "talent". And I put that in quotations for a good fucking reason. Boycotting will help I guess. But are the Oscars really checking for black audiences? Do they put a black host in place to appease our pallets, and to draw us in, or as coon entertainment for their evening?

I wasn't referring to their personal beliefs, but why people may see the sense of "standing by your man". :dead: :dead: :dead: And why pretty much everyone in here is not expecting to see Will Smith on the red carpet simply because his wife made an MLK speech on Facebook, even though he wasn't by her side in the video.
Married couples are expected to roll as a unit. To an extent, they
do become one entity. That's pretty much the entire concept of marriage in America. You join names, bank accounts, families etc. etc. So I can't agree with Kur.
I just can't fucking clap.

QuoteGeorge Clooney: Let?s look back at some of the nominees. I think around 2004, certainly there were black nominees ? like Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman. And all of a sudden, you feel like we?re moving in the wrong direction. There were nominations left off the table. There were four films this year: ?Creed? could have gotten nominations; ?Concussion? could have gotten Will Smith a nomination; Idris Elba could have been nominated for ?Beasts of No Nation;? and ?Straight Outta Compton? could have been nominated. And certainly last year, with ?Selma? director Ava DuVernay ? I think that it?s just ridiculous not to nominate her.
But honestly, there should be more opportunity than that. There should be 20 or 30 or 40 films of the quality that people would consider for the Oscars. By the way, we?re talking about African Americans. For Hispanics, it?s even worse. We need to get better at this. We used to be better at it.

You guys may have already discussed this but I agree with Whoopi. Why get mad during Oscar time? Where was everyone all year? Don't get mad at the Oscars for skipping over POC. Get mad at these dumbass studios that don't produce or support POC driven films. The Oscars can't nominate shit that don't exist.
And before anyone screams 'Creed! Compton! Chi-Raq!' just know that all of that was basically sidelined by studios. Creed clearly could have done some damage but again turn your attitude to the studio that decided Stallone was the only thing worth support. Same thing applies to Compton. And Chi-Raq was distributed by Amazon so it was dead on arrival.
