Snoop Dogg Asks Fans to Boycott ?Roots?: ?Let?s Create Our Own S?t Based on Today?
Snoop Dogg has no plans to watch the Roots remake, and he?s telling his fans to also boycott the show.
The rapper sent out his message over social media on Monday (May 30).?I?m sick of this shit. How the f? are they going to put Roots on, on Memorial Day?? Snoop said in an Instagram video. ?They going to just to keep beating that shit into our heads about how they did us, huh??
The History channel?s revival is a four-part, eight-hour series that debuts Monday.
Snoop said he has no interest in new shows and movies ? specifically mentioning 12 Years a Slave ? that ?keep showing the abuse we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago.?
?I ain?t watching that shit, and I advise you motherf?ers as real n?-s like myself; f? them television shows,? Snoop said. ?Let?s create our own shit based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what?s real. F? that old shit.?
The original series, based on Alex Haley?s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, debuted on ABC in 1977.

He has a point
Maybe poorly worded, but a fucking point
I get what he's saying even though he could've cleaned it up without the usage of foul language
I think this is kinda ignorant tbh. Discrimination and prejudices are not a thing of the past, so why forget our history? Why not keep our stories relevant? White people arent gonna forget theirs, why sweep ours under the rug? It wasn't pretty, so what. Racism is still prevalent to this very day and stories like this keep people woke and can also be empowering. Lets not forget what our ancestors went thru and what tons fought for. It definitely wasnt to act an ass on instagram. Im offended. Faggot, u boycotting roots but posting pics online of u smoking weed with ur son. People always wanna complain about some shit but aint doing shit to provoke a change, pls

I get where he's coming from but a lot of "today" is based on mess that went down during the era of slavery. :dead: He talks as if remnants of its foundation have completely disappeared from society or something.
I MEAN!!!!!!
I agree.
They need to make a movie about Black Wall Street.
I wasnt going to be checking it out anyway.
I'd be ok with it if it weren't for the fact that the only way for multiple black actors to be cast in a movie where they take center stage is if it's about slavery, jim crow, gang violence, or Motown.
We need variety. I don't think we need to stop slave movies I just think we need more variety.

His wording was kinda off
But yeah I said what I said.
Not clapping for this slave / civil rights mess anymore until they start praising and promoting us in other lights as well
Been tired of the slave mess tbh
Like there's so many more black stories that hollywood can tell
:sevynstreeter:
I agree
Blacks have alot of positive history that's been either erased or whitewashed in textbooks. Inventions, discoveries, etc and it needs to be talked about.
I can do without the influx of slave movies/shows as well
but why don't blacks start trying to create the movies they want to see
or the depictions of us they want out there
instead of complaining about how the white man is portraying us?
YOU DO IT! Be proactive and not just reactive

I'm just sick of remakes. Should have let Roots keep it's ICONIC status and left it alone.
I don't mind a slave mess if it's done right. Example: Underground

I understand that these stories need to be told
But I am honestly tired of seeing black actors in these roles
Give them the same roles that Streep gets, etc. and lets start changing the world through storytelling as much as we can (allowing it to play a part to the many ways of changing the world)... I feel like that's missing... most people don't get to see different AA characters in movies.
These professional writers can't make up shit; they always gotta base their stories on shit that happened in the past. Not every story that gets publicized has to be factual :uhh: unoriginality and money hunger at its finest. White writers aren't gonna go out of their way to create stories about other races unless oppression is somehow involved. That's his point.
I feel like he was shading black people's past, by trying to hold on to today. Nothing wrong with a historical film, but maybe something not in relation to whites for one fckn time.
You don't see Lewis & Clark movies getting greenlit. What about the fckin Alamo? Don't nobody care about or remember that shit. Why do these producers think it's so important to pigeonholed us to a specific spot in history?

And what you said was so important. Through storytelling, we learn new things, especially younger kids. We don't need to be givin historical background checks in films, tv series as much as we do when we can be using these ethnic artists to tell brand new stories that have yet to be told, possibly inspiring black and all types of youth to aspire for something greater. What is a remake of Roots going to truly inspire a young person to do, or an older one for that matter? To not be racist? Ppl should've been known that

No compensation for the businesses and land loss. No recognition. It's a mess.

I'd love to see a movie on the Free People of Color too.
Not all Blacks in the pre-Civil War era and shortly thereafter were downtrodden and in despair, many came to Louisiana from their homeland on their own terms with their own tea.
Built businesses, schools , and all.
They used their education and influence to help jumpstart the Civil Rights movement.
Kids should learn about and be exposed to them IMO.
I love you dearly...
But it's missing the mark.
Some how, some way.
These movies are not telling anyone anything different than what they may experience today in 2016. Eric Garner, anyone?
Tell NEW stories... with rich (personality wise) characters living all types of lives... give inspiration and knowledge through that. My former supervisor, white man, told me that he used to watch The Cosby Show (I know, Bill is a mess, but...) and he said that that family played a role in helping him to be inspired to achieve in life ...
Just show young black, white, asian kids the possibilities with AA faces.
Let's do something different.
I don't know.
As a matter of fact... I looked around on TV the other day.
And AA television is replaced with AA REALITY shows... The basketball wives, The housewives...
That, is a problem, within itself.
Even if I wanted my younger family members to be well-rounded... is that all of what I have to show them? Where is the Family Matters? Where is Moesha? It's not good.
Omg. I actually do wanna see a movie about this. It could definitely motivate and wake us up.
Quote
The date was June 1, 1921, when "Black Wall Street," the name fittingly given to one of the most affluent all-Black communities in America, was bombed from the air and burned to the ground by mobs of envious whites. In a period spanning fewer than 12 hours, a once thriving 36-Black business district in northern Tulsa lay smoldering--a model community destroyed, and a major African-American economic movement resoundingly defused.
The night's carnage left some 3,000 African Americans dead, and over 600 successful businesses lost. Among these were 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 grocery stores and two movie theaters, plus a hospital, a bank, a post office, libraries, schools, law offices, a half dozen private airplanes and even a bus system. As could have been expected the impetus behind it all was the infamous Ku Klux Klan, working in consort with ranking city officials, and many other sympathizers.
Quote from: Dumas. on May 31, 2016, 10:08:59 PM
I still think there's a need for slavery movies because that part of America's history should NEVER be swept under the rug or forgotten. But I definitely align with what you guys are saying as well. Snoop encourages everyone to create their own stories, you can start by doing your research and saying "no thnx" to exclusively feeding on whatever the whites serve to us on a platter. And unsubscribing to white man's theory, such as one drop rules, and all that other mess.
Snoop is onto something but there's a lot of internal work that needs to be done within the community so these beautiful stories can really begin to sprout.
to me, it's like they're glorifying slavery because they know black audiences will run to support it.
Yeah it's not as easy as people think to just go out and create your own. People are going out and creating their own, it's just they aren't getting the funding and backing that they need.
We are not unaware.
But it's not enough.
Slave movies outnumber these shows right now.
And the OSCARS only support those kind of Slave-like films.
2 black shows are not nothing compared to what our generation or uncle/aunts generations had growing up.
Afro... no one is saying get rid of slave movies.
We need to know our history.
That goes without saying.
BUT are we gonna talk about HISTORY all day long and NOT portray new AA characters?
The AA people I know are not slaved up.
They are perched, educated, condo-living downe, and slaying the scene.
I mean. Come on.
But I bet, my little cousins (innocently) would correlate an AA person to slave or living in the "hood" before they correlate an AA person with being perched in some fancy high-rise.
That's a problem. And it's annoying me.
And those movies are not always helping the WAY people think they are.
I'm sorry. I'm getting a bit frustrated.
Still love you.

Well if we're talking about simply putting out "new, fresh" stories, we already have EMPIRE. We also have "Black-Ish", which definitely introduces the new concept of Black family in a wholesome setting, etc.
Are we unaware of these shows?
Well, the title black-ish is proof whites will generally only write in a minority character for superficial, stereotypical reasons. It is definitely a great show though.

Let them take a step into the shoes of a slave who was locked in a basement and writing about how much they miss their children. Or how their husband was just sold off. Or the desperation and hopelessness that came with emancipation; being free and not knowing where to go. Not knowing where your family is. No way to contact them. There was no Facebook, or IM, or phones, or AncestryDNA to help.

Well, if we want to be technical...
Anne Frank was a true story, right? Supposedly?
Unless someone is hiding the diary of a slave, if a slave was even allowed to write/read and possess papers to store away... a slave diary would have to be fictitious, no? Maybe there are no slave diaries to print. In all fairness.
A diary of a black person living in a world of discrimination is most likely to be found... But guess what, that could be a diary written in 2016...
But bottom line, it's important to have the history told.
But NOT TO THE POINT where it drowns all the other AA lives that are completely different than that of a slave. You know what I mean?
I, for one, am tired of black films only getting nominated if you are doing a BIO-movie or a slave-precious type movie.

Slave diaries are real, and they are plentiful.

So There's your "new story" . Something new to someone is something that they had never known to exist.
Thank you for giving me this NEW STORY. I appreciate that. You learn something new every day. I'll look into that.
But I have to say... I'm not THRILLED to read/watch another AA Slave Saga... I think that's just MY point. No matter how you twist and turn it... it's still
AA SLAVES. When I'm hungry for new AA characters of TODAY. With all due respect.
I agree with that.
And to be FAIR... I posed it as a question. Not a fact. Regarding the slave diary. So I'm all for learning. And I NEVER said there wasn't a NEED for the history to be told. I'm saying there needs to be fucking balance.
wow Snoop dogg got dragged in here n stuff
And no offense to anyone...
But most of these slave movies are useless WITHOUT a REAL discussion before and afterwards within the family/friends setting.
I've seen many AA people make fun of the ROOTS movie. And the main character's name. What are they really learning?
Afro, you are intelligent. Many years under your belt. You have more in depth insight. You are connected/you are DRAWN to this.
Not every young AA cares to or will.
So there needs to be some sort of medium that allows people to DISCUSS these films. And soak in the nutrients for growth and better insight.
These films should be treated like the bible.
A "Preacher" to help interpret the word/the film.
Cause more is needed than just the creation of these films/stories to REALLY make a difference.
It STARTS AT HOME to be honest.
But AFRO, no one is disagreeing with the FACT that HISTORY needs to be TOLD.
But you can't get so wrapped up to the point where all you want to take in are these SLAVE-TOPIC films. That's not a healthy balance.
And no one with a brain is agreeing with SNOOP, Afro.

One day the world will know about the WARRIORS of the black race. Those who fought to preserve their bloodline. Their history. And a whip wasn't involved unless it was on a white man's back!

There's so much more than that.
AFRO, please do not insult my intelligence.

That is not true.
Don't do that.
There's a difference of telling a NEW AA driven story without the concept of "freedom". Which is what I got from the "Free People of Color of Louisiana".
Black people are free, that goes without saying. I don't need to KNOW that in the entertainment I'm WATCHING.
Just give me a regular DAMN fucking film. of AA characters.

But you can't get so wrapped up to the point where all you want to take in are these SLAVE-TOPIC films. That's not a healthy balance.
You keep saying I wanted more slave topic films
I said I wanted stories about the Free People of Color of Louisiana.
Honey, they arrived from Haiti on their OWN terms, no shackles, coined up and were FABULOUS.

I'm just trying to understand because the Free People of Color in Louisiana were not slaves but yet you still say they were closely related to slavery.
It was a time period where slavery existed but if someone did a movie on their history in
America there wouldn't be a shackle in sight on any of them or their descendants.
This is why I'm confused like?????
But the story would be based on people who were FREE, during a time of
SLAVERY... and there goes that word again... and oh yeah, another film in that vein, but with a TWIST!

Kids are still perched in middle/high school reading about some little Jewish girl hiding in an attic, what about the slave diaries that have been published? Let them take a step into the shoes of a slave who was locked in a basement and writing about how much they miss their children. Or how their husband was just sold off. Or the desperation and hopelessness that came with emancipation; being free and not knowing where to go. Not knowing where your family is. No way to contact them. There was no Facebook, or IM, or phones, or AncestryDNA to help.
Fuck that little girl.
Ok, is this Anne Frank.
And you're saying there should be a diary of a slave as well, right?
Forgive me if I'm not catching the point.
Right. Its not about saying "we had it worse!!"
But we're forced to spend so much time and energy reading the diary of some little girl that wasn't even from this country but yet the diaries of slaves are not introduced into the classroom. They would be JUST as educational and relevant. If not more.
Well, if we want to be technical...
Anne Frank was a true story, right? Supposedly?
Unless someone is hiding the diary of a slave, if a slave was even allowed to write/read and possess papers to store away... a slave diary would have to be fictitious, no?
See, this is WHY we need this.
I made a topic about this months ago, which flopped.
Slave diaries are real, and they are plentiful.

From a time when there was:
Martin, Moesha, The Parkers, Girlfriends, Fresh Prince, Family Matters, Wayans Brothers, Living Single, Sister Sister... just to name a few.
To now just: Empire and Blackish?
Oh yea. We're in great times.
I only watch How To Get Away With Murder and I don't even really consider that a black show.
So many black movies could be done
I could see a movie set based on Marie Laveu akin to Harry Potter
Movies set in Nubia
Movies set in Haiti about the revolution
Akan and Yourba royalty movies (where most of you nigs come from, not Egypt)
Movies based on Voudon and Magic
A PROPER Egyptian movie, not that whitewashed Cleopatra movie
I'm still holding out for an A list all star all black thriller movie like the Oceans series :dead:
There should have a been a spin off Marie Lavues character from AHS, I don't know why Angela Bassest hasn't been angling for that
Idk about a boycott but I'm over the slave/oppression depictions as well.
To be honest after "The Butler" I was kind of over it.
Black culture is extremely rich and there are so many more stories that can be told about struggle and strife aside from being whipped by Massa. Even if racism is something they want to depict we have sooooo many examples in modern times and those things need to be placed in proper context.
"Higher Learning" is a great example of depicting a modern struggle for blacks that didn't have an exclusive cast. It was diverse and depicted kids striving for education while batteling racism in a very fresh way.
I agree if they're stuck on slavery and oppression, at least let's make it relevant to this day and age
So many examples of racial injustice going on today
It's like they are saying 'this happened 100 years ago, get over it'
I'm sick of this slavery mess though. It's really giving white folks the impression that that was the be-all and end-all, nothing happened after. I see it on my timeline.
There needs to be more movies about all of the ripple effects of slavery. I wanna see a Jim Crow mess that doesn't include MLK, cause I know people that think racism ended when he was assassinated :hmph:

Iman did ask a fair question though, and I have been very curious about it myself for a few weeks. But Ralf, why are you seemingly so invested in African American issues? Afr' I've seen the pic in your siggy before.
I remember when used to lurk on anthropology forums that pic would get posted as Haitians and then the girls would fume and drag and say those children were too mixed looking to represent the majority of Haitians. :plzstop:

Iman did ask a fair question though, and I have been very curious about it myself for a few weeks. But Ralf, why are you seemingly so invested in African American issues? I actually thought you said you would be refraining from these discussions since you don't feel comfortable disclosing your race?
It's not that you say intentionally negative things, but your level of interest and personal investment in some topics just comes off as very peculiar since it's not your experience.
I guess I just wanna know where it stems from and why you feel so inclined to speak on these things but don't share your culture.
Yeah, to be fair, I do remember him saying he'd no longer participate

Hi Loves. Regardless of race.
I grew up in the 90s.
And NEWS flash, the 90s were dominated by AA entertainment, IMO.
So of course I will connect with those artists, actors, etc. and TV shows like Family Matters, Martin, groups like SWV, etc. Especially if I'm on a site that discusses those people. We don't have discussions about Wynona Ryder and what's she's up to? :dead: Like, give me a break.
Also, I don't disclose ANYTHING on here. I've never said anything. You guys only notice it when it comes to topic of race... and furthermore, in this thread I was talking about entertainment and AA characters on TV, which is something I think EVERYONE needs to discuss, cause it's a world issue. And it's not just about AA, it's about Indians, Asians, Hispanics, as well. But this is a predominately black website and so we are... that's the discussion members are presented with here. :uhh: Not abnormal.
And I'm not apologizing for that either. Don't really care what anyone says. Lol.
You don't have to acknowledge anything I post. That's fine. It's all love on my end.
Thanks.

That's quite obvious. I'm asking why he as a non-black person seems to care about that so much. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, im just trying to understand why. I could even understand just saying there should be more people of color, or even black people.....but to zero in specifically on dark people is just odd to me personally and I wanna understand. Because I don't just wanna assume that it's not genuine, which is how it comes off at times.

Shit, even Monkenstef slays me with their one hit wonder selves. :dead: So I set myself up, thinking I was gonna get a full-on black girl group. Cause I IDENTIFY successful girl groups with the AA women I grew up on. Regardless of RACE. You have to understand that.
So when I saw the trailer and they DIDN'T give me a COKO, SWV, 90s slay mess. I was like... ch...
Simple as that. Now, will I not watch the show because of that? No. But it was a honest feeling. Not that deep. These artists you love, I love them too. Give me that breathing room, plz. Regardless of race. This is not about the AA experience. That's ignorant to think you can identify with another race. Stupidity. Don't mix the two.

Real, I honestly can't apologize for how you feel.
I think it should NORMAL for different races to show interest/ or dare I say, even CARE, about other races. That should be the norm.
Not whites only showing interests for whites.
Blacks only showing interest for blacks.
Although I believe minorities should uplift their communities from within as much as possible. That's a different topic in itself.
Like... that's a problem for us to be disconnected. I have a different upbringing and I wasn't raised like that. So I'll leave it at that.

If you go back, I said that I could understand it. If you put it under the umbrella of "black people" or POC, but to specifically point out dark skinned black people is what muddies the waters for me personally. That's why I asked the question. I'm legit trying to understand why that specifically is important to you, as someone that #1 isn't dark skinned, but 2, isn't even black.
That's like me saying there aren't enough Koreans on TV. I could just say Asians in general. But for me to specify Koreans.....it would seem that there's a reason why I single that group out.

It's not just about BLACK people, hun. There are dark skin people in most races and they end up getting white-washed in entertainment. EX: They found the whitest looking-mexican girl for that role on HTGAWM.
You'd have to be blind to not see the way dark-skinned performers get the scraps in the business of art.

I'm not attacking you. Nor did I say you were wrong. When you posted that, I simply asked "why?"
Like, if you were a dark skinned AA female and made that statement, I would immediately understand why. You would feel under represented. But as a man of another race completely, I didn't understand why you felt that way. So I asked.

when you infer and assume shit, you come up with faulty results. If it's documented, go back and read the shit so you can formulate an opinion on what's actually there. An inference based off something you already don't have full clarity on is not gonna help you get the clarity. at all :dead:

obviously, hun. & yet lighter-skinned ethnic people are presented with more opportunities than darker-skinned ones all of the time. In order to get rid of a cycle, ppl need to shed light on those that were once oppressed; that's why BET exists.
I applaud the Black Panther casting directors for getting three darker-skinned actors to play the leads, because the shit never happens and if it has, please post the productions of the same caliber that have done it.
Regardless of race... I can only speak on my interests and what helped mold me.
I'm only going to discuss the Lee Daniels shows, since that's whats going brought up.
I'll say it ONCE again. I LOVE SWV. Period. Regardless of RACE. Or even GENDER, since u mentioned AA female.
When I heard Lee Daniels mention that show... I immediately thought "Oh, I see them doing an early 90s slay with a black girl group slaying the scene". Guess why? That's what I GREW UP ON. That SIMPLE.
That away RACE. And just focus on my interests and experience with that.
You don't have to be the same race to want that race to be represented.
You can't be the close minded.
And you also have to remember, I am posting on a predominately black website. If I didn't have the same interests, or artists that we connect with, I would have left a long time ago. But we all seem to have common interests in music, film, tv... I love that.
And I can't apologize for thinking I was gonna see a SWV group instead of a 3LW group.
Cause it won't real or genuine. And I FEEL THAT WAY because I grew up that way. Regardless of race.
Your UP-BRINGING and what YOU'RE EXPOSED TO makes all the difference.
I've seen interracial relationships throughout my family for DECADES. And I have seen many culturals connect and BLEND to the best of their abilities. That's WHAT I KNOW. That's MY experience. It shaped me, I'm sure, for having a diverse, more open minded outlook. I don't know?
Maybe if this was "One Direction Source" and I was on a board with a different demographic, I'd be discussing Leo Dicap, or Wyona Ryder more often... cause I love them too. But here I get to talk about Angela Bassett and Nia Long, who I love to. It's just a common area of interests for the demographic I'm in. RACE doesn't have to determine who you connect to. That's how it you're making it seem. But I could be wrong.

no, you read something he said and insinuated what I quoted. Please find the post where someone explicitly states, "because they arent dark skinned, they aren't recognized as an AA girl group."

I never said it.
well, you said something that dealt with dark skin people (that I agreed with) and from that, he somehow thought it meant dark skin people are the only ones who can represent real African Americans. & that's something no one has ever said or would ever even agree with :dead:

I actually thought you said you would be refraining from these discussions since you don't feel comfortable disclosing your race?
It's not that you say intentionally negative things, but your level of interest and personal investment in some topics just comes off as very peculiar since it's not your experience.
I guess I just wanna know where it stems from and why you feel so inclined to speak on these things but don't share your culture.

When the comment was dissected further, that's when the conversation expanded. I'm not confused about the frequency of you referencing dark skinned, because tbh, even that one time was enough.
