I did Manhattan for a few. I don't like it in general, living wise.
Then Long Island City.
I considered North Bergen, NJ.
Or Hoboken.
The problem is, other places want to charge $1800+ for some roach infested, paint peeling mess. No, ma'am.
You feel forced to pay more just to get something CLEAN, renovated or new.

Camden, NJ
QuoteCamden has a national reputation for its violent crime rates, which consistently rank among the highest in the country, and in the developed world. Real estate analytics company NeighborhoodScout has named it within the top 5 "most dangerous" cities in the United States every year since it has compiled the list. Several times it has been ranked 1st on the list, most recently in 2015. In 2012, Camden set a new record by tallying 69 homicides[307], making for one of the highest murder rates ever recorded in an American city. In addition, since the FBI began uniformly reporting crime data in the mid 1980s, Camden has never seen its yearly violent crime rate drop below 2 per 100 residents. In comparison, the national rate is about 0.37 per 100 residents.[308] So, the lowest violent crime rate that Camden has ever had was still nearly six times the national average.

Here's a downtown Brooklyn apartment
Studio $2620
https://streeteasy.com/building/33-bond-street-brooklyn/920
GODtown BK >>>>>>>
I think that apartment is a bit more on the higher end though in price.
I haven't been there or researched it in a min but I remember the average for a studio being somewhere around 1400-1800.
The area slays. its fucking perfect.
I like it.
I think I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too, though.
I want a NEW, CLEAN, apartment that's like $1200-$1500, that's also rent stabilized.
:dead:
If it's not rent stabilized, landlords can increase your rent by $100+ a year.

Where are the good places to live and not get shot or robbed?
Northern areas of Queens (come to southside though if u feelin froggy :raycharles2urmess: ) , certain parts of BK..
I mean in most boroughs there are POCKETS of very nice area and POCKETS of pure mess.
When I was living in Brooklyn there was a park right next to me - one day I decided to walk on the other side of the park and ended up across the street from the fucking projects. I fucking panicked.ssf

Which borough are you in?
I did Manhattan for a few. I don't like it in general, living wise.
Then Long Island City.
I considered North Bergen, NJ.
Or Hoboken.
The problem is, other places want to charge $1800+ for some roach infested, paint peeling mess. No, ma'am.
You feel forced to pay more just to get something CLEAN, renovated or new.
You should try Downtown Brooklyn.
It's energetic and safe ....convenient
Nice mixture of people. Rent is reasonable.
it's perfect for young professionals tbh.
If it were closer to where I work I'd probably be perched there again.
Been there.

It's pretty strict here, except some places...
But you need to make 40x the rent to get in.

And for me... I don't care if I can afford it or not.

I always say shop based on your salary
And most landlords will check anyway.
You won't be making 20K a year tryna move into an apartment for 3K a month. :plzstop: :plzstop: They'll want receipts of your salary - paystubs, etc.
Nike Suit, Apple & Co. will happily allow you to live beyond your means but landlords will put a stop sign with the quickness.

When I read people bump into you without saying excuse you I just couldn't imagine. A bitch would get yanked for such a thing.
I felt like a straight up Country bumpkin when I visited to my cousin in Chicago last year. We went into a gas station and we ran into this couple and I said, "Hey, how y'all doing today"
And they looked at me like:

I might be PMing all of you tomorrow. I?m moving soon. And I have a LOT of questions. My job is helping me find a place and Jersey just seems like the most sensible option I?ve been presented with. But I?ll know more concrete info next week.

For the people in here who are students and live in an apartment, why don't y'all just live with your parents? I'm in 3rd year university rn and I live with my parents.
It just doesn't seem plausible how some of y'all are students yet are paying thousands of dollars a month for rent. I've also heard about how tuition is extremely expensive but I've always wondered how much?
Here where I live, I pay around $8,000 a year for my tuition (that's before my scholarship deducts the price). That number gets rounded up to $10,000 once you include textbooks, bus pass, etc.
The fact that some of y'alls 3-month rent is equivalent to my yearly tuition is kinda scary :uhh:

Manhattan is an arm and leg for some noise and a shitty landlord. You need to look into Brooklyn.
!!!
My coworkers live in harlem and pay crazy money - didn't have gas for months
And talk about not having hot water off and on like it's fucking normal and something you can get used to.
And the infestation in Manhattan is gross :uhh:
There's no reason I'd should be paying nearly two grand a month and have to deal with no hot water and Stuart Little perching in my damn cabinets
bitch omg
:x
I really admire anyone that can persevere through shit like that but I just couldn?t. I don?t make money like that yet anyway, and I sure as hell wouldn?t be wasting it on rent out there if I did
The sad part is...
Unless you have subsidized housing (reduced rent, and the government pays the difference), Even in the "hood" you're wasting money on rent, cause those apartments can easily go for $1300+. In the fucking hood.
My friends pays $385, but her apartment is really worth $1450 on paper.
And she lives in the projects.

It really is.
As a college student, you should try to stay home.
Not everyone has that luxury though. You have to factor that in.
$8,000 can last you a year's worth of rent in Florida.
In NYC, it may last you 3-4 months tops.

Nah.
It's tuition which comes down to around $8,000.
Then it's textbooks which could be anywhere from $800-$1,000.
Then it's U-Pass (bus pass for college/university kids) which is $385 or $395.

NY would have u at a 7 floor walk up, no elevator, laundry mat like 5 blocks away, kitchen combined with living room ass studio for like 2k smfh

Its the traffic here in NYC. There's almost no such thing as even driving comfortably unless you're in a more suburban area.
It can literally will take you 15-20 minutes to get past 3 blocks in Manhattan on a regularly mild traffic day.

That was a price from Brooklyn, actually.
I lived in Manhattan for 1 month. For a production, I was helping my friend with. I love socializing in the city, but I wouldn't live there.
I've lived in Brooklyn and Long Island City.
Both places with studios going for $1800-$2500 easily.
1 bedrooms are $2500-$3500+ easily.
Brooklyn is huge though, so if you go further down/up, you may find $1200+
But it's too far from work... I work in Manhattan.
And the sickening part is... the prices are becoming the NORM to most young professionals.
And I'm like bitches, WAKE UP!
My friends (a couple) just signed a lease in Brooklyn for $3850 for a 1 bedroom.
I just. That's $46,000 a year ALONE, not including utilities.
Yes, they're splitting the rent... Yes, they can afford it. But...
