I mean i think materialism and braggadocio is still gonna be there
but hip hop is moving on a bit
this is a cliche read
I wished we fucking stopped caring how white people perceive us, because at the end of the day, we still will be called niggers and get the cops called on us for stupid shit
but it's a derivative message from rappers though but if they continue to make bops, keep at it then Kings

I think Tyrone?s situation was a little different. I would consider it a sub-category of materialism, the means of obtainment. His idea of ?securing the bag? by any means necessary is troubling. Seeing him posted up with his designer clothes, bags, etc reinforced this ?flex culture? or idea in some black people that they need to uphold a certain image, look like money, keep up with the joneses. When it was alleged that he was paying for these luxury items with aid for other students, he was doomed. Proof wasn?t needed. I do believe some blacks don?t like to see other blacks do better than them, especially if they consider the methods illegitimate, which somewhat underlined that crabs in a barrel mentality. Unfortunately, the speech for that teachable moment on materialism fell on deaf ears once people saw him as the keynote speaker of scamming.

Yh maybe back in 2004, the main rappers we have now are all past that
The popular "IN" rappers, Drake, Kendrick, J.Cole especially, Big Sean don't even rap about that mess
All of Jay Z, Kanye & Nas most recent albums have been more socially conscious.

Girl. J. Cole just had a super successful album and his songs did well but they?re not the most popular rap songs nor did the masses know these songs like a Migos song.

Nicki called someone a nappy headed hoe whilst she's perched blonde wigs and blue contacts, rapping about sex in exchange for lux goods and cars, collaborating with child molesters, is she included in this list

and I didn't say NO rappers were rapping about this stuff I said the MAIN and popular ones out aren't even on that type of wave.
Why are we acting like we're in the era of G-Unit and Murder Inc :dead:
If your name isn?t Drake, Kendrick, Cole (one of the elite rappers): then you have a better chance of getting a hit if you rap about being flashy, drugs, killing, etc.
We don?t even have to go back that far. The #1 album right now is Travis Scott.

I don't think Eric is coming at ALL rappers, because clearly it doesn't apply to all of them. He's saying "IF" your "art" promotes the following things....

But I'm actually mindful of what I'm listening to and aware that it won't really affect me. I see it for what it is.
I still don't know what Percocet is and I don't intend on finding out.
But there are young, impressionable Black boys out there growing up in the hood listening who may not have that same awareness as they're listening. This music glamorizes and even normalizes illegal, self-destructive and dangerous behavior.
Which is why I kii'ed when Snoop called Kanye an Uncle Tom :omf:

I was very disturbed when I actually thought about the message Anaconda sent out....
My anaconda don't want none
Unless you got buns, hun
As she swung her inflated boovy around in the video :plzstop: :plzstop:
Basically letting girls know, if you wanna bag a nigga you need some ASS and if you don't got it, GET it.
I love her but it's really disappointing.
People credit Kim for being this pioneer and mess, but what she basically started was the outright objectification of women in rap.
Biggie basically told her "Nice rap. You got skills....
But take off your shirt and find new and exciting ways to say that you suck dick and take it raw. :woohoo: "
Meanwhile the AIDS epidemic was slicing and dicing the Black community the fuck up.
Men in rap, especially gangsta rap, were already objectifying women years before Kim. Kim helped pioneer the objectification of men in rap. A slut walk, a Lemonade. She?s actually regarded as a feminist in regards to her role in rap.
?Got buffoons eating my pussy while I watch cartoons?
?I don?t want dick tonight, eat my pussy right?
?The moral of the story is this, if you ain?t licking this, you ain?t sticking this, and I got witnesses.?
Sure she told men how good her sex is, but she was mostly telling men what they could do for HER while being that free with her sexuality to even go there. She was using men for sex. ?While you count your jewels thinking Ima cheat you, the only one thing I wanna do is freak you. Keep ya stone sets I got my own baguettes?
And also capitalizing off of what men were willing to give up, to get what they wanted. Further objectifying them by focusing on their wallets and labeling them ?tricks.? If you want to look at women as objects, then they?re gonna cost, like objects.
It still looks ?wrong? because it?s a ?use what you got, to get what you want? message in the most explicit way. But it countered what was already going on in rap from the other side.
just some fun facts :supluv:
Didn?t Kim get slutted out by the entire junior mafia ? :omgwatshappening:

An article about black feminism without Jans? Throw it away.
If you wanna call her a slut, skeeze w/e but her raunchy lyrics and sexually charged image flipped the script for black women in music, they were finally in charge of their sexuality and how they could show it and Lil Kim was at the forefront at that movement :dead:
Madonna is cited for doing that for 80's and 90's pop no one discredits her or reduces her for it
I know Lil Kim isn't in her prime anymore and isn't what she used to be, but whilst she was ON she wasn't a "slut" for shits and giggles
Kim was def the new wave feminist.
Before Kim you had to throw on some baggy jeans and a sweater to demand the respect.
Hardcore will always be the most iconic era in female rap.

If ya'll want to say Kim was best known for feminism
No one said that.
:-/
Women have been using their sexuality to get themselves over on men, owning it and reveling in it.
Janet, Madonna & Lil Kim were known for that
Female sexuality is empowering and they knew that.
QuoteIt can?t be a mere coincidence how much more openly sexual the female rap stars of the late Nineties became as well. Lil Kim and Missy Elliott were not only embodying bravado their male peers could get away with but were doing so with the confidence in ownership that Jackson exuded and demanded. It was the dawn of a new era where sex and sexuality could move to the center of the pop-music conversation.

I'm sure if someone asked Future what his intentions were with the release of "Mask Off", or his goal as an artist overall, he'd say he was looking to empower everyone , or inspire , or whatever. :omf:
But the bottom line is that he has a song out there glorifying the use of Percocet. It'd be safe to say that one would really need to dig DEEP to unearth any deeper message he has. As "AmbrosiaForHeads" did for Kim when they focused on her "overlooked" feminism
Are your straws plastic or have you gotten on the paper straw wave????
And this statement is absolutely void. Not when Hip-Hop is set the precedent for so much black creativity and art you won?t. Much like jazz, much like the Blues Hip-Hop has been on the frontlines of so much social and political change when it comes to black liberation work. This is so unintelligible coming from an artist as profound as Eric Bender. It?s disappointing actually.

Kim was a shining example to young Black women everywhere with lines like "You know we about...sex drugs and cash!"
She was a great influence on the Black community and should be respected as such.
Look up feminism bby.

There is an imagined way in which folk think feminism works and it just doesn?t work that way especially when it comes to black feminism. I get your point.
I definitely believe in supply vs demand as well, regardless of situation. Which is why I don't extremely bent out of shape about POC being included in EVERYTHING in the mainstream.....We're ultimately still in a White country. Makes sense that we'd see a lot of well...White people. :omf: The buying public is what corporations are most interested in regardless of color. If there's an opportunity they're going to take it.
But with that being said, look at Kanye's catalog. Kendrick. Consumers are definitely open to things other than gang, drugs, and sex mess.
When it comes to CONTENT (and content is the discussion here, as opposed to representation of a minority group), I think it's different.
Music is very fashionable. These artists SET trends. What's cool to say, what's cool to do. So it's definitely a different conversation than discussing underrepresentation. These are individuals with the power to literally pull an audience in whichever direction they choose.
You?re right, but I think everybody is conscious of race nowadays and enlightenment with all the racial tension going on. White people will support a Kendrick Lamar, but not to the same degree they?ll support someone like Drake for obvious reasons and I don?t expect them to support someone who is ultimately against their agenda. It?s up to blacks to want to be enlightened. White people can afford to be stupid.
I think the difference then vs now is, the consumers tell radio what they want to hear via what they choose to support online. Back in the day, songs were played on the radio and you had no choice but to like them regardless of their subject matter. But since the turn of the century, people have largely cared for mindless music and have been affected by it. It?s to the point now where there is no variety and all you hear about is sex and drugs and getting money. So a lot of black people and white people and brown people grow up with that mindset. But it really takes a toll on us.

Folk really that lazy huh? Pronouncing feminism is not the discussion at hand. What liberated person does that? :uhh: Feminism is full embodiment which what activism ultimately is. Looking at Kim?s body of work and the way she cultivated her art and aesthetic was indeed an act of feminism. Reclaiming her own sexual identity, delivering lyrical prose that challenged her male colleagues and reimagined the way women could or could not be portrayed in Hip-Hop.

He?s right. However, I?m iffy about stuff like this because at the end of the day, it is what the consumers want. It?s like when LGBT cry for representation in a Marvel movie but the general public doesn?t care to see it. If there wasn?t a market for it, it wouldn?t exist and thats the honest truth.
I'd agree wholeheartedly with the bolded sentence if we were talking about only adults.
Kids are the biggest consumers of music like this. Do you think their biggest concern is being "woke"? No, it's being "cool". Priority is not standing out too much, and following the trends.
That's what concerning to me.
I'm sure an adult would be able to see the "feminism" in Lil Shim's raunchy antics and think more critically about what these other artists are throwing out...but, at the risk of sounding cliche, what about the kids?
They're highly impressionable and absorb EVERYTHING they see and hear like a sponge - with little to no thought of the purpose behind what they see or the consequences of repeating it.
A pic I literally just scrolled by on my timeline.
You?re right. Children are impressionable, but it?s the adults that are letting their kids listen to the radio and playing that bullshit around their kids. And those people were raised on that same garbage. At the end of the day, it?s up to you as the parent to raise your children and set boundaries. A rapper star shouldn?t be raising your kids in the first place. It?s cute to listen to and bop to, but when you start to emulate what you hear and choose a darker path in life, whose fault is that? The parents!

I mean STRICT.
Did that stop me? Chile please. I was getting my Lil Shim and Fox the fuck AWN . :omf:
I grew up in the hood. THere was only SO much she could do to keep me away from it. Once I stepped out that door, her rules were at the mercy of peer influence and pressure.
Yet you turned out to be a respectable adult despite that.
I feel like teens know what the fuck is what. If they become whores its because its in their nature, not because Kim said fuck for car keys and double digit figures. Some people are just naturally sexually CHARGED. Its only human. Has nothing to do with entertainment in most cases, IMO
All I got from that was Afro was a young whore of the hood
Lazy niggas pressed cause they got clocked with history and not some micro ass opionion based on they feelings being hurt. I got time today. Get at me though when you want to discuss music and actual history. We too developed for "stan wars." You know who you are.

Added what later?
You're grasping at straws at this point.
You came in here shuckin' and jivin' - thinking that I would hold or present an OPINION piece as fact in a debate...when I was shading the fact that those Shim articles were presented in here as such.
The shit went over your head. Deal.
You been grasping at them tho.
You added that you ?don?t think she?s a feminist.? When you?re constantly editing extra mess into your posts after people have already read them... I mean :shannonsmissing:
Lilkim the feminist icon of the golden era of hiphop. Damn

Unless that line was added AFTER you came in here shuckin' and jivin' about me wanting Nicki included as a feminist, you have no point.
It was added AFTER I?d read it the first time. The original had no indication that you didn?t feel that way about her. Until AFTER I clicked on.

I?ve also made it very clear that these articles aren?t the reason why I believe such about Kim. They support my stance, so does the college course, but I?m relying on what I know about the subject and how Kim?s impact and moves in the game aligned with that. This is why I criticized Bath for needing to see others say it, or hear others speak it, for it to be worth considering.
Whoops wrong thread

I was corrected in the same thread and I accepted ggggg

My stance was made clear before you came in here.
Stance being, "I do NOT see Nicki as a feminist". There was literally no room for misinterpretation.
Feminism wasn?t a part of the conversation UNTIL I came in here so how Sway?

I was clearly referencing a specific post that I made after the feminism convo began, luv. Re-read and take note of the quoted.
"Before you came in here" is referencing you shuckin' n jivin' yesterday morning about me wanting Nicki included as a feminist. :omf:
Nigga WHAT?!
:kii:
Do you toss and turn through the night as well sis because .:;;;
Oh and when I said I introduced the fem convo, I meant that I would love to ride in a hot air balloon one day
You think Kim and Nicki are bad role models and therefore can?t be feminists, which is untrue, and also where you started off wrong.
You saying ?my stance was clear on Nicki and feminism yesterday morning before you even brought up feminism? makes no sense and/or illustrates how misinformed you are about the subject. Which then begs the question why am I debating the best way to season meat with a vegan?
You had a clear stance on sex, drugs, and cash but no handle on the subject I introduced. Fix a flat butts having nothing to do with feminism whether you edited your post before, after, or WHILE I was reading it. So whatever sarcasm you tried still falls short because all you?ve said is that you think Nicki is a bad influence just like Kim. You can?t have a clear stance on something you don?t have a clear understanding of. Maybe that?s where the disconnect lies.
Shit...the way Bath got demolished in here is just....ack-a!
