Aaliyah had a beautiful voice, but chose a certain style which set her apart from the other girls.
That style, while still beautiful was not the popular sound in the 90's. Back then the divas were expected to hoot and holler on every Diane Warren power ballad. If you didn't, haters would say you couldn't sing.
Aaliyah had a beautiful head and chest voice. Never understood why people said she couldn't sing.

I remember Aaliyah saying she didn't like the recording process with Darkchild. She said she likes to take her time and he tried to rush her.
I think Brandy X Darkchild was perfect for NSN. I know it really helped Bran to be the vocalist she is today.

Key word here is decent and I agree. Im not impressed by decent performances. And we cant blame ppl for judging her for what she gave when she was alive. She was decent live and very good in the studio.

and decent amount of power when she belted. I dont think she "held back" she just paced herself
its not good to compare with Bran because she was always exceptional vocally. Even during NSN when her voice got thin and hoarse a lot
she was still a smart enough musician and vocalist to sing around those issues and sound pleasant

That's what I was thinking. Brandy wasn't an appropriate comparison. Aaliyah always seemed to have great control of her voice though.

Every single singer out there has had bad vocal performances. The voice isn't always going to be a perfect instrument and that's the beauty of it. As an Adult, Brandy is a beast more often than anything else and that's a testament to her abilities and training

What I got from this is that Rodney thinks Aaliyah could sing.
I can see how Aaliyah may have not had as much chemistry with Rodney in the studio by stating that she likes to take her time and not be rushed. Brandy is very agile and can get her shit done spot on and quickly. Monica I can see singing a whole verse and being done with it. Aaliyah is not the most agile even as an adult. But I wish we coulda hear them do a couple tracks together.
