Anyone who wants to know more about Melungeons:
As in, the history, legacy and prestige behind it, and not simply focusing on a racial admixture (ignorance):
Here's some literature. Take some time to RESEARCH before casting stones.
An article my cousin created:
http://thethackerchronicles.blogspot.com/search?q=melungeonOur African roots:
http://www.eclectica.org/v5n3/hashaw.htmlAnd this is worth reiterating: (taken from the above article)
Quote
1. The very first black ancestors of Melungeons appeared in tidewater Virginia, not in the 18th century, but in 1619.
2. Not one single Melungeon family can be traced to a white plantation owner and his black female slave. The vast majority of the African ancestors of Melungia were freeborn for more than three hundred years.
Thomas Alexander Dumas, the highest ranking man of African descent in the European army:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas-Alexandre_Dumas Get into the HISTORY. Yes I'm on here playing around with Beyonce videos and mess but I am READING about my family's rich history right here in the states. Gathering literature, educating myself. It is something I take quite seriously. I'm blessed to have a history that I can read about, names I can research and people I can connect with. I am so proud and serious. Don't let the playful mess fool you.
What you didn't see is me breaking down crying once I finally figured everything out this weekend.
Yes, I have the "African. Spanish. French. Indian." breakdown of Melungeon heritage in my signature but that shouldn't be taken as "I'm MIXED!" like many Black people do or insecurely interpret things. It's knowing the history behind each line of heritage that makes the Melungeons who they are. It's being educated on how these people intersected to make Melungeon ancestry and being proud of it.
Know the difference. talk 2 u guys later
