Melungeons are not the offspring of white southern plantation owners and helpless black slaves. Most of the African ancestors of Melungeons were never chattel slaves. They were frequently black men freed from indentured servitude just like many white servants of the 17th century.

So let me make it known...this is a BIG reason why I feel the need to celebrate my Melungeon heritage. By doing so, people on here now know the FACT that firstly, we did NOT all arrive here as slaves, our African heritage is NOT 100% slavery. And Melungeons, even though they began to mix with other races, were NOT the product of slave rape.

And do you even know what indentured servitude is?

Both white and blacks were brought over as indentured servants. They worked to pay their passage way into the New World, until their debt was paid off. It was CONTRACTUAL. Once they served enough to pay their debt they were able to go and build their own identities.

Never did I say every line of my family is Melungeon. 

But the woman who raised me is.
it's a big part of who I am. 1/4th. I was raised by my mother's family (which did not include my biological grandfather btw --- my grandmother remarried before I was born and I barely had contact with him, if you're wondering),  and I have every right to celebrate who we are.

Me celebrating Melungeon is celebrating Blacks who were free and had their own identities. And I can print receipts to prove that. Anyone who takes issue with that needs to reevaluate themselves. Not me.
