Empire depicts successful black ppl tho. ROOTS is disgusting. Period.
Success built from drug empires, murder and theft.

Only to then turn it over to a predominately white board who eventually votes him out.

Yeah, it's just dripping with Black reverence and respect for our intelligence.
fdfgggg yea Roots is much more inspiring than a damn Empire

IF this remake is done the way I'm hoping, there'll be no comparison. Empire no longer inspires me not one bit smh mess

I like the character Madea, I just don't like the world and other mess Tyler paints around her.

What do you like about the character? just curious

she can be funny but the whole aesthetic is just... :hmph:

I just like the fact that she's a hot mess intentionally. The things she says and does is meant to be funny, and not taken seriously. I kind of see her as a subversion to the mammy trope.

It's just when Tyler tries to give DRAMA and social commentary he fucks up and ends up looking foolish.
!!!

Although he's nailed the drama lane a couple of times in his earlier days IMO. "The family that preys" is EVERYTHING

Idk about a boycott but I'm over the slave/oppression depictions as well.

To be honest after "The Butler" I was kind of over it.

Black culture is extremely rich and there are so many more stories that can be told about struggle and strife aside from being whipped by Massa. Even if racism is something they want to depict we have sooooo many examples in modern times and those things need to be placed in proper context.

"Higher Learning" is a great example of depicting a modern struggle for blacks that didn't have an exclusive cast. It was diverse and depicted kids striving for education while batteling racism in a very fresh way.
love this post

I'm sick of this slavery mess though. It's really giving white folks the impression that that was the be-all and end-all, nothing happened after. I see it on my timeline.

There needs to be more movies about all of the ripple effects of slavery. I wanna see a Jim Crow mess that doesn't include MLK, cause I know people that think racism ended when he was assassinated :hmph:
!!!!!!!!!!!  :kii:

Vonc2002

I do agree that I'd love more stories in hollywood movies. ROOTS is not a movie like that imo. I guess I just view roots in a totally different way
This is my pass to say WHATEVER tf I wanna say about the mess she releases so I don't wanna hear SHIT! Baby mama is a mess of a song btw

That movie was the first Tyler Perry film where I was thoroughly impressed. Must be because he didn't direct it. That and Diary of a Mad Black Woman slayed actually

Real

Iman did ask a fair question though, and I have been very curious about it myself for a few weeks. But Ralf, why are you seemingly so invested in African American issues? I actually thought you said you would be refraining from these discussions since you don't feel comfortable disclosing your race?

It's not that you say intentionally negative things, but your level of interest and personal investment in some topics just comes off as very peculiar since it's not your experience.

I guess I just wanna know where it stems from and why you feel so inclined to speak on these things but don't share your culture.

Real

Kids are still perched in middle/high school reading about some little Jewish girl hiding in an attic, what about the slave diaries that have been published? Let them take a step into the shoes of a slave who was locked in a basement and writing about how much they miss their children. Or how their husband was just sold off. Or the desperation and hopelessness that came with emancipation; being free and not knowing where to go. Not knowing where your family is. No way to contact them. There was no Facebook, or IM, or phones, or AncestryDNA to help.

Fuck that little girl.

Ok, is this Anne Frank.
And you're saying there should be a diary of a slave as well, right?

Forgive me if I'm not catching the point.
Right. Its not about saying "we had it worse!!"

But we're forced to spend so much time and energy reading the diary of some little girl that wasn't even from this country but yet the diaries of slaves are not introduced into the classroom. They would be JUST as educational and relevant. If not more.
omffff
I wonder how we could get access to them
Probably somewhere in ATL in Porsha's care?
"Fuck that little girl" has me kicking and screaming
