I think my grandmother just happens to be different. She's a tough woman who doesn't really have tolerance for nonsense. Now I know their marriage hasn't been flawless, but in each occurrence she's handled it quite accordingly.

At times I felt my grandfather was scared of her.

My grandmother wasn't having it. Maybe that's why I view these things this way.
She is a woman who believes that her husband is well....hers.
So I can't agree all women "back in the day" developed or encouraged this type of thinking.

If anything I'd agree that the old school mentality is that the man goes out and takes care of his FAMILY financially, while the woman tends to the kids and house.
Now that is something that I know was very popular and is also a way that my grandparents operated.

Definitely not all women, but a lot of them did.

And the man taking care of the family financially is why a lot of women turned their heads.

I mean, back in the day where would a single woman with 3 kids and no
work experience go if she decided to leave her husband?

Many of those women had no choice but to stay and just deal.

This is what irks me about people romanticising marriage. Most of those women stayed because divorce was grounds for public scrutiny and domestic violence wasn't even considered a crime.
