true ... even tho I usually have this reaction to gaga-prime and Madonna performances. because they're really gay too, really cheesy in a raunch sorta way. I still want him to win.

cause if he was giving a bit more Janet where it flows and it's organic sexy, then yea .... he has to be careful of coming off as using gay for shock value is what I'm tryna say

but i guess the best thing about this is making the apes fume

Yeah and that's the thing for me too

I've heard a lot of gays outside gen-z say his music/performances don't do it for them

But:

- They appreciate him and what he represents +the hate he gets so they root for him

- They understand that they aren't the target demographic and this is music/content for the children

- They realize not every black artist has to be exceptional. If the Selena Gomezes and Justin Biebers of the world exist then so can he

And that just about sums up about how I feel about him tbh

The songs are ok. I'm rooting for him though. Him>>>>>>>

My initial thought was that this seems so contrived. Almost like his label wants to push the limits as much as possible because it will garner publicity, more IG followers, and buzz.

HOWEVER, most young artists these days are in the same boat doing what he's doing in their own way. So far that, I give little bro a pass and support him.

Why do they always have to express their lifestyle in such a stereotypical way? Last time I checked, gay was a sexual orientation , not an act.

but at the same time, it's like using "gay" as a shield from legit criticism
the same way Lizzo does with weight and justifying being a big slut as body appreciation, no girl you just wanna show your mess off and you're upset you don't give Chloe to do it  :uhh:
the same way Normani did with being darker, "oh look at me the underdog that came from a group FULL of white chicks with major label backing, I'm lazy as shit and annoying af but feel bad for me and stuff because I'm dark lolz!"  :uhh:
and I honestly hate when they do stuff like that

I mean ... I'm just saying, yes there are white artists that make it, but we have to remember, white IS mediocrity lol, when have you just seen a white person EXCEL over any and everything a minority can do. It's just not possible.

So yea we should support him and root for him, but he's got to start doing much better imo

I agree with Bent' tbh. He'll get my support for doing the thing as a black, gay boy but he's very underwhelming as an artist/performer at this point in his career.

When the novelty/shock value wears off, I hope he has more to offer.

What's interesting about Lil Nas is with all mess he does there's still a masculine energy to it

It's hard to explain
I honestly haven't seen anything like it since Prince

On the bright side, he's only 22 so i'm sure he'll have a long time to improve.

Hell, look @ Dua. Quee went from dancing like a corpse to doing a decent two step with some stage prescence.

I think it puts a spotlight on what's missing in the industry today vs back in the day. And that's artist development. The way a label would bust an artist into shape for years before they allowed them to debut and invest money into them>>>>>>

To me the only examples of artist development atm are the anomales that randomly blow up years later after having a budding career (Lizzo, Doja, etc)

& those K-Pop groups/solo stars. They literally have the zorls in group training camps as teens/young adults busting them into shape til they're "perfect". Although that's a lil controversial (and lowkey abusive) but that's a whole another topic.

I just dont get how we are okay with white ppl being mediocre but for black people we put this pressure on them to do exceptionally better. "Oh since ur the black gay one, u gotta be near perfect". None of these new artists today are REALLY giving us anything at all (black or white). The Britneys, Janets, Beyonce's, Usher's, etc., we dont have that in this new generation of artists. And for me, Lil Nas X doesnt need to be this amazing ass performer in my eyes. Like why?

If the masses are okay with Dua Lipa doing her two step and Taylor Swift being one of the biggest selling pop stars out now while doing the bare minimum when it comes to stage performance, Ariana is merely just okay, Bieber is pure shit and urine on stage, and the list goes on and on, why does the black artist gotta go above and beyond to prove they can sit with the rest, when he is pretty much alrdy sitting with the rest? I dont like that mentality at all. What if he doesnt want to be this big entertainer? Frank Ocean isn't. He sucks live. And the other white gay men sure arent exceptional either. Sam Smith's queen self aint nobody's performer.

I think we are prob just spoiled because of the artists we came up seeing in their prime. Nowadays, all an artist has to do is do a lil twirl and shimmy, and the new generation of music lovers start yelling "Queen! King! Icon! Legend!'. Those titles arent even revered or earned anymore. Its a new day guys. These young kids dont care about all that shit.

I agree

That's part of my earlier logic

These crackers coast on being mediocre

So why should we hold him to a standard above that

But of course black/queer artists are always tasked to be exceptional due to barriers of bigotry.

Franc' has a point about the new generation not really caring about the gorls giving a PERFORMANCE, while us the older generation do.

That's part of the reason none of these newer gorls really do it for me. 95% of them are lazy and unremarkable.

Most definitely. And pandemic or not, a majority of these new artists would NEVER see me buying a $200 ticket to attend any of their concerts. No way in hell. I'll leave that to the youngins. I'm more inclined to go to those Vegas shows to see the veterans.

And thats just my thing with Lil Nas X. If everyone else was serving, and he wasn't, then I'd go in. But he's actually attempting to do more than most. His visuals alone, the money and budget he uses to get it done and create thought provoking storylines, its to be applauded. Cause most arent doing it today at all. Overall, he's improving though from Old Town Road, so I'm willing to just give the man some time.

You girls pay attention, you know what's happening, but when I bring it to you directly, you deflect. Every time a black man comes out, he is overly effeminate or he ends up doing something effeminate like wearing a dress or putting on makeup and a wig. It's sad when white men do it to a lesser degree. It's like damn, no gay artists wants to come out and just be masculine? What's wrong with just being a fucking boy? Not to say it should matter, but a straight man will never relate cause they cannot see themselves in that shit and neither can I. Yes, like gay men, I have effeminate qualities, all men do, but I don't need to get in touch with my feminine side by donning a wig and heels to feel it.

Well perhaps the problem is that the gay men in the entertainment industry that arent more effeminate are the ones that find it easier to stay in the closet, keep their sexual orientation on the low and wont come out. Perhaps that is where ur attention should be directed.

ILoveMakkon, Frank Ocean, Lil Nas X and Kaytrnda  :dead:
Only one of them is flamboyant and feminine jdjdjd
Where's the fucking conspiracy?
Black men gay OR straight have been rocking flamboyant fashions and performances since the beginning of time, Prince, Andre 3000, Little Richard, James Brown and scores of indie artists
Lil Nas X is the first in years to do so and all of a sudden there's a conspiracy dnnsdndndndn
Sounds like a bunch of old used gay niggers pissed someone younger and more was brave enough to live free in a way they couldn't :dead:

Even IF that outlandish logic is true, there's really not enough openly black gay artists in the industry who have randomly femmed out to be successful to make that a theory. Hell, there isn't that many out black gay artists to begin with. Perhaps we should wait until there's a lot more that fit that category before we make such a blanket statement.

Lil Richard and Prince were fags.

The point still reminds. Gay men cannot afford it. We know why they do it. They think gay is synonymous with being female adjacent. That's the truth.

I repeat: gay ain't an act, it's a sexual orientation. One cannot act gay unless they're happy. That is a description, not a verb.

It's not just blacks, it's all of them, especially the recent ones.

This is how it goes:

Begins career, normal, music normal.

Come out, becomes overtly effeminate, playing up tropes and stereotypes

Keep shoving it down our throats...Gay this and gay that.

Glitter, make up, wigs to express being gay.

Why can't we have an artist like Chris Brown and he still gay¿  a ghetto, hood ass nigga, rolling blunts, hooping, hanging with his niggas¿ Why we gotta get effeminate, diva Beyonce wannabe, dresses, nails done, platform heels type of gays? who can us butch queens relate to¿ ok, we had enough of that. Now it's time to represent other type of gays and give them mainstream success. Step away, Billy Porter.  You know why they won't cause the world and the media thinks being gay is just that..a Billy Porter.

It reinforces so many negative stereotypes. Not all gays wanna be fckn Madonna or Gaga like damn. Then ppl wanna get mad if you don't identify with it "oh well you stick your dick in men don't you?! You're self hating!"

It's about proper representation, the same communities (trans and fags) that fight so hard cause they want somebody to understand them totally overlook a certain certain of homosexual ppl because they don't wear rainbows and do splits. It's so backwards.

Somewhere there's a masculine gay boy that's frightened as hell because he thinks being gay is automatically turning into a fruit up. It's really messed up how trans and gays dominate the conversation and use anything to legitimize their oppression lol

The question remains, would he have become this flamboyant if he hadn't have gotten famous! So all the "oh he's so brave mess" .. no ma'am "oh he's so RICH" is more like it, he feels he can do whatever now 😂

Well, I said it before and I'll say it again. The masculine gays are the ones that are hidden in the closet and not coming out. So blame THEM. Lil Nas X was a Nicki Minaj twitter stan in his teen. I expected this from him. I dont think he's this macho 50 Cent fanatic that decided to fag it up for attention. If anything, taking this route was even more of a risk for him.

Of course we all want more representation of what a gay man is like in entertainment. But the focus shouldn't be on telling the out gay men to camouflage who they are - it should be directed more towards why the masculine gay artists aren't coming out. Cause there are a lot of them in Hollywood. Shit, Call Me By Your Name is about a closeted gay man in the entertainment industry. So be mad that the other fags aren't coming out. And let's talk about why THEY choose to not come out.

yeah lil nas's transition is not very uncommon at all among men who are closeted and come out

I've seen it a lot . Men who go from peeking out of the closet to putting on lipstick , dressing in drag etc. from one end the spectrum to the other.

Like there's no middle ground for them. All or nothing either way. Bbbbbb

I def see what people in here are saying cuz sometimes , with that specific population and their transitions it's like omg calm down :calmdownsis: just chill .

But that's kinda easy for me to say cuz I've always been pretty comfortable with who I am and have always embraced my femininity . And def believe there's a certain "class" to my femininity in my regular everyday life ... I'm not gonnna be in the streets rolling my neck , wearing rainbows and screaming "hear ye hear ye!! Y'all im gay!!! 🗣 u heard dat?? I said I'm Gay!!!!! 🗣"

Jdbfnfnfnfncn

I think I take a lot after my older sister and stole her swag. She's super reserved , calm and lets her beauty speak for itself . No extras.

But at the same time I get these men . At some point it's like a volcano when they've kept their real selves suppressed for so long .

The super fem extreme they're showcasing may or may not be who they really are. But it's def a result of them hiding for so long . Only time will tell if they find a medium space between DL thug and rupaul.

I know I say this a lot, but I see both sides in this debate. :omf: great points

and this is gonna be one of my long posts so brace urselves. :omf:

some things are fucking CLICKING a bit  :plzstop: reading this thread and talking about this

it's like he kinda wants to be me or like me in a way.....

like he's always talking about hair and skin tone and mess....he's actually the guy I made that "Black women are not delusional" thread about....

http://www.brandysource.net/index.php?topic=99757.0

i didn't go TOO much into detail about the backstory and intentionally dodged Lonz's question on page 3 of the thread  :omf: because i honestly wanted the thread to be about the black women i was advocating for...and not derail it .

but he's always calling me "coolie" and mess.  and including himself in on it ...on some "ack! coolies in da house!" mess nsdnsndsddsd

he's (Black) Dominican, so at first i just kinda wrote it all off as typical behavior tbh and was just like ok lemme educate him on why it's not OK to say certain things.

to me, it just seemed like he has an innocent "guy crush" on me. like a "bromance" tea.

the other day we were in the park at night and this guy approached and tried to talk to me....he immediately intervened and let the guy know that i was his younger brother...in a semi-aggressive way. the guy backed off. and im happy about that cuz i had no interest in chatting with the guy. at all. and my friend could tell i wasn't.

but the guy said, "but yall dont even look alike  :uhh: " before he walked away.

but my str8 friend was seemed so excited and was like "he said we look alike! :woohoo: "
i said....he said we DONT look alike lol....without thinking anything of it

but i felt bad after correcting him cuz it's almost like he was disappointed
at first i thought he misheard the man, but then i was like..wait...did he just hear what he WANTED to hear?

and i was hoping he didnt take it any type of way cuz i would NEVER be offended if someone thought we were twins. he's very very handsome. VERY.  we just dont look alike

initially  my thoughts were , if gays can admire Beyonce and our other divas without it being something sexual or being accused  of being hetero...why can't straight men admire men without being gay or bi? or even curious?

but at the same time, we obsess over Beyonce and Naomi and Toni because we can in some way IDENTIFY with them. there's something about them that we CONNECT with.

i just thought he was one of those colorstruck straight guys who was obsessed with hair and mess....but this thread is making some things click for me and making me wonder. is he a future Lil Nas X mess owt?

sdsddsdds

ok end essay.

Well, I said it before and I'll say it again. The masculine gays are the ones that are hidden in the closet and not coming out. So blame THEM.

>>><<<

I hear you but I respectfully disagree with this statement and we have to stop pushing this narrative that masculinity equals closeted and afraid to come out. Because it's not always that. Especially recently. My experience with a lot of more masculine gay men is not that they have an issue coming out or accepting who they are or admitting who they are. They just don't feel the need to PROMOTE it or wear it in everything they say, do, or support. In other words, being gay doesn't define them. There's a difference between DL and just a masculine homosexual and we cannot always push this idea that one belongs to the other.

Do most gay men have feminine tendencies that may surface from time to time? Sure. Absolutely. But I don't believe we are one-trick ponies per say. And I agree with a previous post regarding Lil Nas and his fame being a way for him to come out and be himself.

Again, all for the freedom of expression. I just want more of a MIX in the midst. We fight so hard for people to not put us in boxes. For people to not stereotype us (black folks). For people to not think one size fits all. When you see a black men with his pants handing off his ass walking down the street, don't assume that I'm that same man; don't stereotype me. And then we as a black community fight for more representation OUTSIDE of that stereotype.

I believe the same thing applies to the gay community and quite honestly, I'm just tired of seeing the same ole folks carrying the torch.

I honestly look forward to the day where being gay is just a "oh yea and btw" not a "did you know? Can you believe?".

Why are some of putting pressure on this kid to represent the entire spectrum of the gay community? The gay community is a SPECTRUM. There are manly gays, fem gays, DL gays, hood gays, you name it. The only person he owes representation to is HIMSELF. If he's fem, or on some spectrum thereabouts, he doesn't owe shit to any of you. What the fuck is wrong with y'all? Stop projecting YOUR desires onto this kid and let him live HIS fucking truth. Damn.

Damn.

I was speaking specifically about black gay artists in the entertainment industry - not in general. And all Im saying is that based on what Ive seen, it's more likely for an artist like Khalid to come out as gay than an artist like Nate Dogg.

I get wanting more representation and diversity  for the LGBT community—particularly how Gay Black men are represented.

However that really has nothing to do with Lil Nas doing HIM.

Put pressure on some of these closeted gays in the industry now. I think the bigger issue is why don't they feel comfortable coming out?

The fumes seem a bit misplaced in here. I applaud him for his bravery—truly.

Lil nas is just doing him

Flamboyant gays will always get more media coverage cuz it's more "fun" .

And the comments in this thread are kinda why I was confused about why so many gay men were upset with Nipseys comments about gay feminine men being pushed in the media

Even as a gay non-masculine guy I could kinda see where he's coming from , just as I can understand where non-feminine gay men are coming from when they complain about the lack of representation

It's not a figment of the imagination that the media favors flamboyant gay representation over more relaxed or tamed teas.

It's not a figment of the imagination that a lot of people expect all gays to know how to do people's hair, have a great sense of fashion, do great interior decorating and be their best "girlfriends".  Which all can kinda be taken back to media representation.

I just think we tend to always see things from one side ... which is usually OUR side of it. As opposed to being open to reasonably consider ALL sides .

We get super emotional and our thinking cap is thrown to the backseat .

which is understandable. It's a touchy topic with a lot of mess, trauma and hurt involved . But I'm never offended if I see a masculine gay man saying he wishes he could see more of "him" on TV.

For the record, my comments were not asking Lil Nas to wear the burden of black gay representation on his shoulders. In fact, I said multiple times I'm all for freedom of expression and am happy he can express himself. I was speaking to the diversity, which isn't condemning him.

Wanting more of one thing does not mean you want less of  another. Very "yes add some more chicken to that rice". Not "nah that's too much rice, take some off and add some chicken." Stupid way to put it but yea, you get what I mean.

Not sure why the aggression about letting him live his life. I,for one, never said there was anything WRONG with how he chooses to express himself.

You see how your mind has been programmed?  You see gay and you automatically associate it with being soft, effeminate, and "girly". That's how gays, and society, see each other based on perception. The fact that one is gay period discredits them in our society no matter how masculine they appear to be. It's why gay men are so caught up on the elusive trade.

These mannish water drinking battygorls spoke the word in here

It's not about being mannish, it's about playing up tropes and stereotypes. You guys keep forgetting that gay is a sexual orientation, not an act.

Sidebar: IAmZo recently said something similar and gays were eating him up on Twitter, but I'm like, he is only admitting to how you guys really feel. Why are you guys upset¿

Wow the repressed gorls got stomped the fuck out in here

Wait, aren't  you the one that is always posting ugly , dusty straight guys¿ How about you practice what you fucking preach. You fags kill me quick to call out discrimination against gays by gays but you discriminate against gays based on your objects of affection, which ultimately says that you don't even find gay men attractive. This is why I can't with you fags cause you stay contradicting yourselves but shame me for calling it like it is. Is the man in your signature even gay¿  :uhh:
Im screaming at you immediately fuming and swinging at the sight of "CJ" in my username :plzstop:

JCJ posts the dusty men.

That's why I asked you. I have avatars and signatures turned off and some of you guys change your names all the time.

Her dusty ass up in here capping like she's right in head. The nerve of you, you and this transformer.

If he's genuinely expressing himself then I'm cool with it, but I'm not gonna pretend like these labels aren't known for exploiting young artists for marketing purposes.

I just feel like this boy is gonna get used up and tossed away, only to perch on a Behind the Music mess in 3-4 years crying about it.

I'd say that I hope I'm wrong, but I'm never wrong lolz.

I mean...since when are labels FORCING male artists to be flamboyant? You can't really name more than a few examples. Times have changed, but clearly not that much considering this thread and the pushback he's gotten  :dead:
