Whoopi Goldberg sparks outrage after saying on 'The View' that 'the Holocaust isn't about race'

During the roundtable discussion, Goldberg said she was surprised that the nudity in "Maus" -- and not the Holocaust itself -- is what appeared to concern the school board, while co-host Joy Behar replied that the nudity concerns were likely "a canard to throw you off from the fact that they don't like history that makes White people look bad."


"Well, this is White people doing it to White people, so y'all gonna fight amongst yourselves," Goldberg said, referring to the Holocaust.


While none of the co-hosts pushed back after that statement, the conversation then turned to how some are attempting to ban problematic parts of the nation's history, particularly history dealing with race and racism, from being taught in schools.


Goldberg responded: "If you're going to do this, then let's be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn't about race." She added that the Holocaust, which saw an estimated 6 million Jews and 5 million others killed as a result of the Nazis' racist ideology, was about "man's inhumanity to man" and said it involved "two White groups of people."


While many Jewish people today are seen as White because of their skin tone, whether they should be characterized this way remains a subject of debate given that Jews across the world continue to face blatant anti-Semitism. In Nazi Germany, Jewish people were considered a "race" -- the Nazis attributed many negative stereotypes about Jews to "an unchanging biologically determined heritage," according to the US Holocaust Museum.
When Goldberg again insisted that the Holocaust wasn't about race, some of her co-hosts began challenging her statements.


Behar responded that the Nazis considered Jews to be a different race, while Ana Navarro noted that the Holocaust was "about White supremacy" with the Nazis killing both Jewish and Roma people. Sara Haines added that the Nazis did not view Jews as White.


Still, Goldberg continued to insist that the underlying issue was one of "how people treat each other" and the segment concluded shortly after.
The segment captured the attention of the internet, with many Jewish leaders and institutions refuting Goldberg's statements.


"Racism was central to Nazi ideology," the US Holocaust Museum wrote in a tweet shortly after Goldberg's comments began circulating. "Jews were not defined by religion, but by race. Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and mass murder."


Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, also condemned Goldberg's comments.


"No @WhoopiGoldberg, the #Holocaust was about the Nazi's systematic annihilation of the Jewish people -- who they deemed to be an inferior race," he said. "They dehumanized them and used this racist propaganda to justify slaughtering 6 million Jews. Holocaust distortion is dangerous."

Jewish people (those who are genetically Jewish and not just religiously) are not "White".

they are of Middle Eastern descent with some Eastern European genetics (Russia/Lithuania, etc. which are "White" but that's only PART of their genetic makeup).

there was some study where they kinda STRETCHED it a bit

other groups who were killed were gay people and people with mental and/ or physical disabilities.

This doesn't even make sense. There are five races, and most Jewish people self-identify as white. People from Sudan and South Africa often have different features, yet they may all be black.

You're basing this off of the concept of the "Aryan" Race. There are no real sub races; this is a fallacy. The Aryan race is not a real concept; this "sub-race" was made up.   The Holocaust was not about race because there were far more components and people persecuted that were also white.

The Holocaust was centered on white supremacy and purifying the white race. This was the goal. So they created this ideal that Indo-Europeans and it's various ethnic groups were of a superior sub-race. They even separated The Nordics as being more "pure" than Northern Germans based on their features. So even the Nazis agreed that people could have different features and still be white. So why can't Jewish people also be white with different features?

Because Jewish is not a race; it's a religion and ethnic group.

Bruce it's not about whether or not these "sub races" are real or not . I think we all know white "aryan" men created that mess to distinguish themselves as an upper tier of whiteness.

What matters is that their concept of RACE was used to justify the killings of millions of Jews. Which means "RACE" played a factor in this. To eliminate that word from the conversation is to ignore the ideals that ultimately cost millions of Jews their lives.

Does that make sense?

And yes there are distinguishable differences in Jewish people that stem from their added Middle Eastern/North African ancestry ... most notably their "hook nose" and curly hair and/or "Jewfros" . It's a stereotype but there's some truth to it .

For the most part genetically Ashkenazi people (with significant/recent genetic Jewish ancestry) look like wtf they are ... Middle Eastern/Israeli

I do would like to say a lot of victims in the World War were from Germany and the Netherlands. It really had a terrible impact on our country and some of family members were forced to go to work in factories for Germans. They were not Jewish, it's just that most German men went to the army so they needed men to help create weapons. I have read a diary from a family member and they tried to sabotage production a lot. They almost died because they were depressed and didn't have much to eat. The war was terrible for a lot of people. My grandmother survived the bombings on her city. There are multiple cities completely destroyed because of bombs. The grandfather on my dad's side tried to fight the Germans but eventually had to surrender to them, just terrifying.

The conflict in Israel is completely different to me. I don't like what's going on there at all. I also think they are seen as holy at times..even tho they clearly caused deaths.

But I just wanted to say the Jews during the World War really suffered and it was horrible. But those families are not the ones living in Israel, starting shit right now. I have seen reports about rich entitled Jewish people from all over the world (also New York) buying land there and it's a big problem for the people who lived there for decades.

Many Ashkenazim are descendants of people who left the middle east HUNDREDS and hundreds of years ago.

To later settle in Rhineland and ultimately in Eastern European countries. ...then migrating to America and other places.  Which explains their more unique and distinctive genetic makeup - a mix of Middle Eastern and Eastern European. They were AWAY from Israel so long that Europe became a significant part of their overall genetic makeup as a group.

A lot of people who died  (and fled for their lives) during the Holocaust never stepped foot into Israel in their lives, nor did their parents, or grandparents, or great grandparents.  They had genetic ties to Israel but no social/political ties. To lump all Jews from that era into one box with that mess that's going down in Israel is crazy.

Hitler was a racist and he is responsible for millions of deaths. He also believed if Aryan people, for example children, would have children with black people the race would get destroyed. Yes and politicians are also a big problem because some of them had grandparents that had slaves and I'm so sick of these excuses 'but the slaves liked working there'. Like wtf..very bizarre that they can't fully admit that it was evil.

I have seen a doc about the camps in the USA for Japanese people. The Cats of Mirikitani (2006) about a painter who survived. A lot of people died in those camps and were treated like animals (also children). They were forced to give up their American passport even tho they were born in America. It's just a very very dark history...I'm very happy the Americans helped free us from Nazis but they also destroyed a lot of innocent lives in those camps. It is good to talk about history.. we often hear about the 'heroes' but it is time to educate people on mistakes and dark history as well.

great point Annie .. Americans put a LOT of expectation on celebs and we tend to look to them for their opinions on mess and put a LOT of weight on them.

we expect them to be leaders and social activists. when in reality many of them simply don't have the range to do more than copy/paste activist catch phrases and recycle mess they've seen others say.

this actually works in Whoopi's favor because without Americans caring so much about what celebs have to say on serious world issues, she wouldn't have a seat at the table to begin with.

BUT this incident is where that actually backfires on her. she finds herself in a situation where she wasn't educated on a situation, approached the convo as if she was talking about it with her friends at brunch ...and made a HUGE mistake with her words.

I haven't read the comments yet in here but the struggle of a Jew, who can literally  pass as white, (and in my opinion pretty much are white, especially Corporate America or in other spaces where wealth is easily obtained) cannot compare to that of a black person, who has no choice about the color of their skin and perceived social standing.  Yes, Jews were massacred during the Holocaust but how can we blame Whoopie, as a black woman, for feeling like the suffering of black people was far more significant, even up until this day?
