It appears that many of us assume that all Africans were slaves.
Mind you, I never mentioned slavery being a part of Melungeon history, but it was ASSumed that it was part of it.
And maybe that I was celebrating mixed slave rape blood :uhh: :uhh: :uhh:
And apparently, we think it's a kii.

How much do you guys actually know about what you're talking about?
QuoteMelungeons are not the offspring of white southern plantation owners and helpless black slaves. Most of the African ancestors of Melungeons were never chattel slaves. They were frequently black men freed from indentured servitude just like many white servants of the 17th century.

:justabit:
So let me make it known...this is a BIG reason why I feel the need to celebrate my Melungeon heritage. By doing so, people on here now know the FACT that firstly, we did NOT all arrive here as slaves, our African heritage is NOT 100% slavery. And Melungeons, even though they began to mix with other races, were NOT the product of slave rape.
Let's get that clear. Some of you who are calling others out on their mess are showing how TRULY ignorant you are. Try the mess you're pulling with someone who's claiming mess for the hell of it without researching. Not me. Cuz Imma fact check that ass every time you do. Idiot.

Don't try to spin it now, hun.
Because when I told you that Angolans FREELY mixed with other races you said I was being delusional. When it's fact. They are not the products of slave rape and NEVER were.
Quote2. Not one single Melungeon family can be traced to a white plantation owner and his black female slave. The vast majority of the African ancestors of Melungia were freeborn for more than three hundred years.
you were wrong. Accept it and move on.

And do you even know what indentured servitude is?
Both white and blacks were brought over as indentured servants. They worked to pay their passage way into the New World, until their debt was paid off. It was CONTRACTUAL. Once they served enough to pay their debt they were able to go and build their own identities.

I didn't really take another gander at my results from a test until I saw how accurate Theo's were.
My grandmother came back as Dominican. The Dumas family is originally from Saint Domingue (which is now the Dominican Republic/Haiti).
Don't forget hun, and don't get it twisted. this is something I had ALREADY had an idea bout months ago.
Check how I was ALREADY piecing together clues. This didn't come out of nowhere.
http://brandy.4fans.net/index.php?topic=8946.msg247372;topicseen#msg247372
Melungeons and Creoles are very similar. So I was 80% there. I just got the name wrong.
So I reached out to one of my maternal matches and he confirmed that I am of Dumas descent.
I matched his Dumas relatives.
It's the accuracy of THeo's results that made me question whether or not I WAS overlooking something significant. notice that the contact with my DNA match occurred this weekend, the same time Theo posted his surprisingly accurate results. It renewed my dwindling faith in DNA testing. I'm actually thankful to Theo.
Honestly the 2% Native has to be attached to the Melungeon heritage. They usually come back with a TRACE of Native. Since the Natives mixed with them, but it was still majority Africans Spanish and French, my DNA reflects that.
My great grandmother is Coharie. I know all of my Native relatives names and they lived on the Coharie settlement. But as I said BEFORE (again, nothing new), many of the Native tribes have refused to offer their DNA for testing. And strictly go by your family charts.
But anything that has to do with my grandmother, is 1/4th of who I am. Anything.
Again, to anyone who thinks this came out of nowhere, I guessed this months ago.
http://brandy.4fans.net/index.php?topic=8946.msg247372;topicseen#msg247372
Now it's confirmed. NOW I feel comfortable really claiming it. :justabit:
Jjjj who thought all Africans were slaves?
Maybe their ancestors were, not mine!
What's happening
I can really understand Afro because as African Americans they are just so detached from their history, so I can understand that he would go looking for it and embrace it so strongly, however, I don't see why it is soooo very important for him to claim Lemba, Melungeon, Native etc ever so prominently, when those cultures didn't really impact him growing up. I feel like it is cute to know where your grand-grandparents hail from but at the end of the day that should not define you.
Keep doing your research, Herb and do what makes you happy, but whatever you find I don't think it changes who you are, it is just a cute fun fact IMO, to quench your curiosity. Not a new identity to take on.

I'm honestly just very excited right now finding everything out. Give me a couple months or so. :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: It's such a rich and beautiful history in my own family. Why wouldn't I want to claim that. This is the reason why people do ancestry tests, it's more than a "fun fact". It's finding out what blood runs through your veins. It creates a great sense of pride and self awareness. And even provides clarity and direction.
Everyone shakes and shivers when they open their results. These aren't just "fun facts" to many of us. Especially African Americans. My grandmother's family slays, I'm sorry. :plzstop: :plzstop: And she's the woman who raised me so I feel comfortable saying it, who's booking?!
However I do see what you mean. But there is a such thing as reclaiming identity. And if it's your truth, you reserve the right to do so or not.
I appreciate that. And you should be allowed to celebrate your findings. But personally I think it takes much more than blood to truly be apart of a culture or ethnic group. Yes, I am 50% Palestinian, and also am I of 50% Igbo descent, but do I really know the true experience and struggle that comes with being Palestinian or Igbo Nigerian, have I internalized life as a Palestinian, being perceived as such... It would be convenient to steadily claim it for exotifying purposes, but really I am kid from Munich Germany with parts of that culture influencing me. Even me, who I have frequently visited my parental home nations and also speak the languages to a degree and have direct relatives from there whom I communicate with on a weekly basis, feel like I'd have to do so much more research to warrant for me to shout it from the rooftop... Also to know if that is an identity I'd truly like to take on.
But agains you said you are just so excited and thrilled for now, so enjoy that, I just believe switching/taking on national/ethnic identity is not that easily and conveniently done and also not that relevant for who you are as a person anyway, unless people perceive you that way or you truly grew up within that culture, it is indeed just a pleasant fun fact to have and also a trigger to start doing more research and becoming a more knowledgable and well-versed person.
That's a strong
opinion to state that anyone would claim heritage to simply "exotify" themselves. Personally I'm more interested and heavily invested in the history and strength behind the stories.
I'd already figured that I was Creole/Melungeon descent.
People have thought that I looked Haitian. Or Caribbean, etc. Melungeons origins are in Saint Domingue which is now Haiti/Dominican Republic. Two people who swore I was Haitian are right on this board. So my Caribbean roots are very much readable.
Check this thread I made in
December, before I confirmed it this weekend, it includes the clues I collected.
When I saw "Haiti" in the Free People of Color's history, alarm bells rang off because I kept hearing it.

Taron:
Quoteyour features remind me of this Hatian girl from NYC that I went to school with. She had the prettiest chocolatey skin with this LONG beautiful wavy hair and her brother was so sexy
Monk:
QuoteI rlly thought Afro was Haitian
idk why
had some Haitian coworkers in NYC
and they all have this similar look
u look distinctly Haitian
But like you said, doing research is important before you claim it.
I made that thread in DECEMBER. At that point it was collecting clues and a lot of speculation. And am now claiming it because I know its true and what people are seeing is real and accurate. Through DNA and documentation.
So I really didn't need a label to be "exotifying". If you have "exotifying" roots sometimes people will notice it without you saying a word. In fact its the opposite, its comments like the ones above, people telling me I look something that I know NOTHING of, that sent me looking for answers to begin with.
So yeah.
I really do not want to be combative, but there are some things I do want to point out to you.
First of all YOUR genetical make-up in its totality perfectly fits the bill of the ethnic group "African American", it is a very typical result for "African American", your personal DNA is not that of "Melungeon" people, nor is your experience growing up that.
So it would be really weird if someone could actually see Melungeon in you when you don't have the proper admixture of racial ingredients. Anybody that thinks I look Nigerian, I don't take him seriously, because I simply do not. My genetic admixture is absolutely atypical for a "Nigerian". Every ethnic look essentially is made up of a certain melange of ingredients. And you yourself do not have the proper proportions of ingredients to be Melungeon. From what I read, Melungeons could actually pass as white or native, which you could not.
And looking Haitian does NOT equal looking Melungeon. The typical Haitian look is 85-95% black, Haiti is known to be the only true black nation of the Caribbean, because they killed off almost all the whities over there. So when somebody says you look Haitian, they probably think you look very very Subsaharan African and not "tri-racial", what Melungeons essentially are, who I am sure form a little minority in Haiti, and people do not think of when thinking of Haitians.
So you might have Melungeon in your family but neither genetically nor culturally, do you fit the bill. Matter of fact you perfectly make up the unique and intricate admixture of "African American", splashes of white, native, Creole/Melungeon, and a whole bunch of West African. And that is also your culture, African American. Now if you really want to travel to these places where Melungeons today reside, talk to them, learn the habits, culture, proverbs, cuisine, and then figure out if this is really who you are, I believe, THEN you can talk about claiming stuff.
For right now it should be a little sidenote, not a the main headline. If we are being pedantic and consqeuent.
Many people don't know what a Melungeon is. And think Creoles are white.
So I wouldn't expect them to say, "are you Melungeon?"
And Melungeons come in all shades and colors.
The bottom line is that the heritage I am claiming has roots that are distinguishable to people in my appearance.
People can see my roots that I have confirmed. Bottom line. I just know how to properly label it. Haitian is a nationality. Melungeon refers to the Caribbean ancestors who traveled to the states and set up shop in Virginia and North Carolina.
That is the CORRECT way to claim it. But people can simply see where my roots lie.
Didn't need the label to "exotify" my roots. The man in my avatar looks Caribbean as well. He's a Dumas. :wellheythere:
Lemme read what's going on here...these paragraphs
n
SddDdddddddd
This thread has me in tears
Why do we do this mess
Afro sis when somebody says you look "Haitian", it means you look BLACK, like really black, extraordinarily black, because Haitians have more African usually than African Americans in their DNA. It DOES not insinuate you look tri-racial to them...
Melungeons are not blacks from the Caribbean, Melungeons are defined by their racial ambiguity with a more or less even distribution of Native, African and European ancestry.
And why would they see Melungeon in you, when really you do not have the proper genetic make up, that just makes no sense.

This whole convo is mess IMO
Sddddddddd
Because this really shouldn't matter and it's truly all subjective tbh
But I see both sides and I kinda agree with both.
When I see Afro of course I know he's black. He has strong features and dark skin.
But his hair texture does allude to the thought that he has ancestry that may be of another race down the line.
However I also agree with Malcolm. When I think of Haitian I think of someone who looks like Ibis or Busta Rhymes. Very Dark and African looking but a splash of some native or ancestry that peaks through subtly.
But tbh I actually consider them more "Black looking" than the average African American where their phenotype is more of a melting pot of a plethora of races splashed in.
They can have a wider range of looks vice Haitians IMO.
When I think Haitian I think of more of an exclusive look (dark skin with a PEEK of native mixed in somewhere deep in their DNA)
So I say all that to say that I agree with both. Sddddd
I see the Haitian thing people could allude to that Af' was talking About.
But I agree with Malc that when people think Haitians it's a look thats more African or "Black" than Melungeon or Creole. Melungeon and creole give me more of a bi racial tea

well it's possible but most African American men have kinky hair in America. that's just what it is. so when you see curly especially on a dark skinned person, it's something not in the norm. That's not me "bragging". so plz no one take it that way :uhh: these are facts

And after digging deeper when you said Melungeons were black, really they are not.
They clearly would not pass as black.
In fact most literature describes them as Portuguese, who happened to have a little black or native in them. Olive skin/tan white people.
:ATLcameo: :receipts:

Melungeons did NOT self-identify as blacks, and also would not send their children to black schools.
QuoteMelungeons would not send their children to black schools and they were not allowed in the white schools, so the Tennessee Department of Education had "Indian" schools for them. This led to almost total illiteracy among Melungeons. They would not have black teachers and white teachers would not teach in their schools, so they had to depend on the few Melungeons who had learned to read at the Presbyterian Mission School in Vardy. None of their teachers had been to high school. In Tennessee until the 1950's and 60's, Melungeons were usually classified as black for marriage, white for voting and Indian for education.

Now I will agree, because this heritage comes from my great grandfather and on some of his documents they had him listed as White. :uhh: which means he was white enough to pass.
But.... there are a few I've seen that could clearly be seen as of African descent.
Dark skin or bigger features with different hair.

You're pretty intelligent, Malcolm. It's amazing how polarizing you can be with it though. This post made all the sense in the world, but then you turn around and say all African Americans need to sound like Harriet Tubman :dead:

honestly if I didn't have my hair I dno't think these questions that would be asked.
but at the end of the day, my hair is actually a trait passed down through my heritage. people realize there's
something "exotical" about me. or however you put it Malcolm.
Doesn't mean they look at me and say . oh wow I know he's triracial. equally on all ends. but they just see something different and a little unique. And I embrace that. I love the contrast of my nose and skin to my hair. :howfestive: :raycharles2urmess: :raycharles2urmess:
couple ignorant ppl may accuse me of perming (like Malcolm originally did) but for the most part people can tell this is the hair that grows out of my head.

Sorry, sis, but it's true.
Sometimes you can just take on whatever perspective in a debate and figure out how to argue it through, regardless of whether that is your personal stance. This sharpens your wit and argumentative skill set. It also makes you look at things from different angles.
However on a regular basis it can take away from the authenticity of my intentions within a debate, when it is a reoccurring phenomenon ? la "Does he argue to argue, or does he argue because has something to say?"
This time around I was being genuine though.
matter of fucking fact....

i'm mad the very link you posted described them as "white for voting" and "Indian for education", and only legally black in some states, yet you typed up a storm about how they in fact are sooo inherently black. Wrong.
QuoteKimbundu-speaking Angolans who, like Angolans in Brazil, described themselves as "malungu". Within a decade of arriving in Virginia, after serving about 7-10 years of indentured servitude, these Angolan ancestors of the Melungeons were free to move from county to county. They were free as early as 1640 to own property and to name their community in their native Kimbundu language.
The name "Melungeon" was not applied to these first Africans by white outsiders or slave owners. It was a name they called themselves.

QuoteFor years, varied and sometimes wild claims have been made about the origins of a group of dark-skinned Appalachian residents once known derisively as the Melungeons. Some speculated they were descended from Portuguese explorers, or perhaps from Turkish slaves or Gypsies.
Nowhere are they described as black or African ethnic group.
QuoteThe origin of the word Melungeon is unknown, but there is no doubt it was considered a slur by white residents in Appalachia who suspected the families of being mixed race.
It was a slur used by whites. And the true etymological background is uknown. But I am pretty sure it comes from the French melange, which means mix.

The heritage is inherently Black. Which is something they seemed clueless about until receipts were printed. :dead:

I don't think iman hates him. I think she made a thread and he took it as something that was directed at him. With him being all obsessed with this digging into his bloodlines, i get that. That discussion just lead to everyone voicing how they were over this heritage shit. Bsource conversations always get passionate, that's all
it doesn't matter who's over it; just avoid the threads if that's the case. The gorls just wanna be messy :dead:
I think it was held up anger/frustration because we on Bsource sometimes handle him with kids gloves instead of giving the real. We know how sensitive he is, I could tell when I called him out on his annoying wet & wavy obsession, low key the girls agreed, but they were shy to agree or say the same, afraid they'd hurt his feelings.

You have to assess the situation case by case and Mel and Afro's situations are not comparable. That nigga KNOWS nobody is interested in those aided chinks, but continues to post. Afro has ignited an ancestry fire within a LOT of these members minds. and the ancestry thing wasn't even limited to this board around that time. I was seeing ancestry commercials on TV on the reg (still do) and was genuinely curious why it was gaining traction.

No one should be exempt. I don't care how popular or loved you're on here. If you're being annoying and tainting people's experience on here then you should be called out PERIOD. If we can call out Monica stans, Mel, Lew, etc. Then this fagg is no different. Don't see why these gors are all "Just ignore it! blah fucking blah!" A lot of people on here DO ignore it but when it seeps over into other threads, I think that crosses the line. Taking up all that bandwidth. Ch... and doing things for attention is tacky af. I didn't believe it before but he really does ride trends out for attention.
Ur not melungeon though. Your great great great grand parent might have been. You by no definition are.

I began piecing it together.
http://brandy.4fans.net/index.php?topic=8946.msg247372;topicseen#msg247372
But the thing is, I'm not comfortable claiming anything until I can prove its true.
Which is why you guys never heard the word "Creole" for months. or Melungeon. It was high speculation. And thats why it seems so "sudden" and random.
I did the homework, collaborated, tested DNA to see if I was actually related to Melungeon families.
And I am a Dumas. My hunch was right all along.
This is my truth that I have worked hard for to research, learn about, and confirm. I'm not someone reaching and randomly grasping mess to claim without even knowing that there's a connection. And that's why nothing anyone can say here can make me change who I am. I know it's mine. If that upsets them, they have to deal with that.

But you have to understand fininding out about "free people of color" is a lot easier and there are more records for those types of cases in our ancestry. It's extremely hard to find out in great detail about our African heritage as much was just completely stripped and wiped away. So in knowing this and adding the fact that he was CLOSE to his grandmother only more fules the fact that he wanted to start his ancestral journey with this side of his family. Nothing wrong with that and you have to start somewhere

I'm good on that. This isn't Iman's first time pulling something like this. I feel if you really like me as a person you'd PM me to call me out on something , not create a shady thread and then piggy back off of everyone else's comments once you felt the coast is clear. You're no better than any other faggot on the sideline throwing jabs that I really don't care about.
That's fake. And I have
zero tolerance for something like that once I see it for myself. Wish her well on her own Ancestry quest though. Too bad I won't be helping her though, was really looking forward to doing that. Because I see the importance of the research for everyone, not just myself. And I'm glad I encouraged others to take that step.
There is power in knowing who you are. And once you know your truth, don't let anyone pressure you into aligning with what they feel makes them more comfortable with you. Take that advice during your quest.

I really didnt think that thread Iman made was about him tho. Like u said this recent phase has sparked interest in some so now it's a topic that we are discussing here, whether we want to or not. Every thread doesn't have to be about him. U opened the floor for conversation so let the conversation be had. Everything isn't directed at afro and doesnt need to be taken personally
yeah, I don't think this was a shot at Afro but I can see why he thought it was. :dead: But somehow, everyone's true feelings came out in the end so Ig the thread needed to be made? idk
Lis, if I'm his "lil sis" then that thought shouldn't have even crossed his mind :uhh: :kii: Afro and I have actually had personal convos and he used to send me lil updates and pics of his family. I told him I'm happy for him but honestly I couldn't help but roll my eyes when he linked me to the last thread and at that moment I felt like maybe, I should inform him that this is becoming a bit much :diddraispoot: but I figured it wasn't my place so I kept it pushing. I made that thread because of the "Questions black people have for blacks" thread. I had that video fave'd for some time now and wanted to share it on here for the celeb reactions to not having NA blood. I think the fact that he felt like I was being shady with that thread speaks volumes to his character and his own internalized issues. The fact that he took an opportunity to personally attack me in that other thread told me everything I needed to know. He's a fake faggot. Fuck him and his "meldungeon" heritage.
s
Just ignore them sis. I've always supported and uplifted Afro whether it be his music or anything else, and I had a very personal moment with him before all the spears during the new black mess made him have that breakdown.
But over the months, he'll drop the term ignorant too freely. Anybody who knows me knows, I'm lighthearted, but don't ever call me ignorant to further your own intelligence.
So for anybody thinks he was getting "plucked" for no reason. Afro knows, just like how he attacked Vonc for NO reason. It's easier for them to confront us because we accept criticism.
But you will never see certain girls calling Afro out on his behavior. Just kissing his ass and its sad.
I'm kinda over it tho tbh lolz
And Talisa how you gonna talk about Iman when there are stickied thread on numerous website forums of you TEARING the fuck outta Afro. Completely DESTROYING him, gifs and all
And he's still up in here lapping up your doggy treats cause he's pathetic.
Check yourself before you come for somebody else bro! LOLZ

What kind of delusions of grandeur.
Once again, that thread wasn't directed towards you. I didn't have any issues with you prior to that but the fact that you took defense speaks volumes. It speaks to the insecurity deep within you. Why don't you take your own advice? :uhh: If you felt like it was shady towards you, wouldn't the smart thing to do would be is PM about the thread? :uhh: I've never been the type of bitch that needed to wait for the coast to be clear to tug a bit :kii: Since when? If I don't like you, you would know it. PERIOD.
You're a fake faggot, and I'm still crying at you still rambling about MY ancestry mess :uhh: You're really on edge huh? :kii: and trust me, I don't need your help and never did. For some reason, you can't seem to grasp that we're completely different people. Different bloodlines, different history and I don't have to go back to my great great great's to feel PROUD of who the fuck I am. I KNOW who I am. I know where my family is from. I can call my parents, uncles, aunts up and get all the tea. Get all the pics. We're different.
Stop acting like you're the President of the AncestryDNA. You def. see yourself bigger than what you are. A narcissistic fool. Work on that.
and really this is the last time I will speak to you.
You're childish af for someone your age and have a lot of growing up to do. I can tel you use this site to feel better about yourself. I have to agree with this to an extent. I literally had no problem with afro.......like AT ALL! I too have had PM conversations with him and he used to damn near be my most favorite person on here. I honestly didn't (and still don't) care about this heritage shit but him going on about it made me wonder what it was all about. He jumped down my throat because i asked a question. Afro does a pretty decent job of hiding his insecurities n shit most of the time but there are other times when simply cant deal. He's shown himself (to me atleast) over the past few months and its tragic tbfhwy. Im not a fan of ass kissing and hand holding and i feel that when those elements are taken away, he blows a damn gasket

Any AA taking this test should be perched on his blog.
It really helps you understand a lot of the results and how it relates to what states your ancestors from. The test is stunningly accurate when it comes to pinpointing your origins though. Because certain slaves were sent to certain areas. The DNA reflects it.
For many AA's who take the test though, their African DNA is sporadically and evenly distributed amongst the total percentage . Like 20% GHAna 21% Cameroon Congo, etc. My GHana came in at a whopping 34%. :ohwow: :ohwow: and then it smoothly transitioned south of GHana to the central region of Cameroon/Congo, then further south to SE Bantu. I'm actually one of the luckier test takes who have a less random distribution of their African DNA. So I'm at least thankful for that.
But I still think more could be done. For instance separating GHana/Ivory Coast. They clump those two regions together. I really wanted to know whether it was more GHana or Ivory Coast. It probably doesn't matter because I guess they're so genetically similar that a clump was logical, but still. :uhh: sss

QuoteDespite previous findings there are in fact also African Americans who don?t show any non-African admixture at all in DNA testing. Even though they can still be described as mixed regionally within-Africa. I managed to collect no less than 4 African American results showing 100% African ancestry, which is about 1% of my total sample group (4/350)(edit: i added a fifth one while writing this blogpost). I verified that these were indeed multigenerational African Americans and not persons with recent ancestry from either the West Indies or Africa itself. Most of the people with the lowest amounts of total African are from Louisiana, but some of these results were also from other states.

Ancient Ghana was in fact 4 counties at the MOST way back then
Most AA's who tests come back with Ghana/Ivory Coast belong to the Akan tribe since it's the dominating ethnic tribe in both countries and a tribe the Europeans took a lot of slaves from this is the reason why a lot of AA's and blacks in the diaspora have this DNA

QuoteA large number of Akans were taken as captives to the Americas, and many people of African descent in the Americas have partial Akan ancestry. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Akan slaves were all referred to as "Coromantees". Due to their organization, common language, and fierce nature, Coromantees were responsible for the majority of slave revolts in the Caribbean and North America.
I hunted Fonte (the creator of that blog) down and had him to analyze my African DNA in January. :justabit:
He gave me props for my impressive GHana score :stressed:
And he had already guessed a good portion of my DNA was from Angolans. And mentioned that people with roots in the West INdies tend to score these types of results in regard to the strong Central African presence.
The tests are real. And scarily accurate.
I really didn't know how to CONNECT much of what he was saying until now. Honestly when I first read it I was like huh :uhh: sdssdsd but now looking with a more educated eye, it makes sense. This is why I never gave up on my research. And THIS is why I am so excited. I've been hard at work trying to understand everything.
Here's my review.
QuoteHi Herbert, these are my thoughts on your results, remember it's just my 2 cents wink. Your Ivory Coast/Ghana proportion is impressive and nearly one half of your African breakdown (36/81=44%). It's twice as high as the average i found for 350 AA's (19,5%) and actually only 13 other AA results i've seen scored higher for this region (proportionally speaking). So this is definitely a region worthy of exploring further to get a better grip on your African background. It's good to keep in mind that besides origins from firstmost Ghana and then Ivory Coast this category could also be suggestive of origins from Liberia and even (southern) Sierra Leone. Judging from the results of actual persons from those countries. (see also African results).
Your Cameroon/Congo score (18%) is also significant but much more in line with what seems to be common among AA's and especially from the Carolina's and Georgia. This region is ambigious as it might point towards origins from both the Bight of Biafra and Central Africa. Given that you also score a fair amount of Southeastern Bantu while your Nigerian contribution is rather small it's tempting to assume your Cameroon/Congo combines with SE Bantu and generally might point towards Central African origins in your case. However other options might still also be valid!
Looking more closely at your SE Bantu score (13%), it's clearly above the average i have found for 350 AA's. It makes up 16% (13/81) of your total African breakdown, while the average would be about 6,5%. It's good to keep in mind though that averages hide a great deal of variation around the mean. I have seen about 35 other AA's score higher SE Bantu proportions than yourself, while about 133 AA's had higher SE Bantu proportions than the average of 6,5%. This region has very wideranging potential implications across southern and eastern parts of Africa. We will have to wait for an update of Ancestry's referencepanel, involving heavier sampling from Angola and Mozambique, to get a clearer picture.
I find this category nonetheless very intriguing, my personal take on any possible interpretation is to go by whatever's been documented on the African origins for whichever nationality the person who's taking the test belongs to. In the case of AA's i therefore believe that a Central African (northern Angola & interior of Congo) explanation seems to be most plausible in a majority of cases (of course there's always individual variation). Because judging from the slave trade records this region supplied about 25% of all captives to the US while the share of Mozambique/Madagascar was no more than 2%. While it's true that the Portuguese were heavily present in this area, starting from the late 1600's they were mostly confined to Angola in the area around the capital Luanda and places to the south of it (Benguela). The captives they brought over to the Americas were destined almost exclusively towards Brazil in the 1700's/1800's while during earlier centuries (1500's/1600's) also other parts of Latin America received many of these captives. Because of incidental pirate attacks on Portuguese slave ships a small number of Angolans also ended up in the US in the late 1600's. Around the river Congo, near northern Angola, it was actually the Dutch, French, English and later on even American based slave traders who were predominant. This place centered around the kingdom of Loango had many interior connections, perhaps reaching as far as Zambia even. So i imagine any Southeastern Bantu scores among AA's and also West Indians (they also can score noticeable SE Bantu scores upto around 20%, even when it's more exceptional), might still be originating from this disembarkation region.

I think they are
They settled everywhere they travelled, adsorbing some of the culture
QuoteA significant proportion of their number, (an estimated 13 million), are nomadic, making them the largest pastoral nomadic group in the world. Spread over many countries, they are found mainly in West Africa and northern parts of Central Africa, but also in Sudan and Egypt.
While their early habitat in West Africa was apparently in an area in the vicinity of the borders of present-day Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, they are now, after centuries of gradual migrations and conquests, spread throughout a wide band of West and Central Africa. The Fulani People occupy a vast geographical expanse located roughly in a longitudinal East-West band immediately south of the Sahara, and just north of the coastal rain forest and swamps, although situations have changed a lot in recent times, and, a sizable proportion of Fulani people now live in the heavily forested zones to the south, in countries like Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Cameroon, Guinea, The Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In my mothers village in Brong Ahafo there's actually a tomb yard where there's 700-800 years worth of buried dead :dead:
My mother is one of the very first of modern people to actually leave for Europe
My father (Ivory Coast) has connections to the Hausa/Fulani tribe and their admixture is more complicated since they are nomadic which means they've travelled from East, to North down Central and West and settled everywhere in between
QuoteThe kingdom of Bonoman (or Brong-Ahafo) was established as early as the 12th century, and between the 12th and 13th centuries a gold boom in the Akan area brought wealth to numerous Akans.
During different phases of the Kingdom of Bonoman groups of Akans migrated out of the area to create numerous states based predominantly on gold mining and trading of cash crops.
This brought wealth to numerous Akan states like Akwamu Empire, (1550-1650) and ultimately led to the rise of the most well known Akan empire, the Empire of Ashanti, (1700-1900), the most dominant of the Akan states.
This is why I :uhh: the blacks who ignore al the WEALTH of African history and glorify that less than 20% Euro or w/e slave DNA (and please this isn't directed to anyone)

Well we have people out here saying Africans are ugly, dirty, not fitting the standards of beauty. Which all contribute to people straying away from their heritage, if they feel Africans are nothing to glorify, why even look into it? But a negro nose don't come from Europe. :plzstop: We're not as far separated from our African roots as we like to think.

It's all about education.
If we were taught this from young, we wouldn't be having these conversations I don't think.
It irks me when people know the difference between Italy and France for example, right down to the culture, foods, languages, caricatures ect
But when it comes to Africa everything is the same..
it's the 'oh let's just paint black and let's get on with it'
Especially when there 10x more variation than the countries they think is so culturally rich and defining
I don't mind it coming from whites because it's not their business, but from blacks it's like :uhh:

I know. But Black Americans can't be blamed for that.
We're not taught African American history in school. Unless it's talking about Civil Rights or Black History Month or the same popular figures over and over and over.
Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks. I mean that can just pretty much sum up the mess we were taught about in regards to African American history in the early years of school. You were slaves, you were freed, you were oppressed, you fought, and guess what , turn on the news when you get home to see that you're still fightin! hehe! have fun kiddies!
My best friend has been teaching her son how to handle the cops as a TEN year old. This is the kind of country we live in. He has to know that he will be a target and it makes me so fucking ANGRY that my Godson has to hear this mess. He HAS to. My bestie has always been a realist and she knows she's raising a Black man. But it still fucking sucks. And makes my blood boil when I think of it. He has to know that a fucking target is on his back before he even hits high school.
I mean she puts it gently as possible but she's starting early on so it can be ingrained into his head. Nothing new when he's old enough to start staying out and hanging with friends, etc.
I'm sorry for rambling but I'm getting pissed discussing this now.
Well fortunately Americans can neither tell Germany from China nor Zimbabwe from Niger.

If Afro didn't PLOP a new fckn identity on his siggy every damn week his nationalism might exude more authenticity...
I just noticed this post. Hol' up . :calmdownsis:
The thing is, every identity I've been claiming is actually part of my family.
I know who my Native ancestors are (my grandmother's mom side). Where they lived, their names, and what tribe settlement they perched on.
http://brandy.4fans.net/index.php?topic=10533.0
I now know my Melungeon roots. (my grandmother's father's side).
Was able to confirm that through DNA.
All of my other ancestors are what some of you would call "just Black". :plzstop:
I'm excited but at the end of the day I am a result of all of these lines.
But I do look more like my mother's side of the family.
This is not me being delusional, this is truth.
That's the difference between genotype and phenotype.
I'm half my dad and mom, but I'm my mother's
twin. I inherited a lot of her physical features. Bone structure hair, eyes, lips, nose, even her eyebrows :uhh: I AM my mother. :plzstop:
There aren't people with "ramen noodle curls" on my dad's side of the family.
Honestly when I go down there they're looking at me like :udontlookok: "boy wat u put in ur hair?" :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:
they can still tell that I am my father's child tho. don't get it twisted. :justabit:
And those country women go crazy over my dad down in Georgia. :dead: :dead:
So no one should think that I'm in any way denying or forgetting him for he sake of "exotisy" sdsdsd
I honestly just don't look a LOT like him.
His skin Is one thing I think I definitely picked up from him. He has flawless youthful skin. :justabit:
But my mom did too so, ssds even that's a damn toss up . :plzstop:

Afro knows, just like how he attacked Vonc for NO reason. It's easier for them to confront us because we accept criticism.
But you will never see certain girls calling Afro out on his behavior. Just kissing his ass and its sad.
I'm kinda over it tho tbh lolz
I too have had PM conversations with him and he used to damn near be my most favorite person on here.
