You guys know I have an ongoing love affair with beautiful dark skinned women. :dead: Kenya is (was) quite high on my list. Naomi is somewhere in the middle. I always thought they had the most beautiful eyes. So you could imagine my dismay to find out that they both wear colored contacts.
A big reason I love these women is because of their unapologetic pride in their own skin, heritage and natural beauty. I thought GODya and 'omi were better than the whole 1998 colored contact mess. Still love them but for some reason I'm so disappointed. I feel as if these types of "add-ons" say that our natural God given beauty isn't enough. This is better, this is prettier.
You don't see white women going around changing their icy blue eyes or green eyes to brown. But mess. I still love them, but it's tainted. :stressed: Ignorance is truly bliss.

I dont think the contacts are that bad. Its along the same lines as make up to me, just an enhancement. Plus I don't really get an insecure mess from them (like Lil Kim for example).

Morn' GODntom
Your comparison is logical but I can't agree..IMO, makeup is used to SMOOTH the appearance of the skin. Hide blemishes maybe, etc. Bleaching creme is used to
change the color of the skin completely. I would compare colored contacts to that. You're taking something and covering your real eyes completely.
Maybe for a photoshoot or something, I can see that. I'm on the same page with you. But to walk around 24/7 with your eyes suffocating to breathe all because you want to give off a Eurocentric illusion..it's a bit much for me. :stressed:

I think I believed it more because of her natural long hair, etc. i just assumed she had a mixed heritage or something. and that her eyes were part of that.
And I thought Naomi's came from her west indian background or whatever. she's very exotic to me so it just fits her whole look.
they pull it off well. At least it doesn't look as bad as others I've seen tryna pull off a light eyed tea. :udontlookok:

I don't think its black trying to be white. Its more 'boring' brown eyed types wanting to be 'special' like those with coloured eyes. Asians, middle eastern, orientals etc all express the blue/green/grey eyes, not just white people.

Because I think it's around 60% of people having Brown eyes in the world

I don't think it's intentionally trying to be white , either.
But it's definitely influenced by eurocentric standards of beauty that have been forced upon many of our african american sisters.

But what I'm saying is in general, people who wear contacts, are doing it to be different, not white. Its an eye colour thing. Not a white beauty thing. As green and blue and grey eyes aren't exclusive to white people. Its just like make up and eye lashes and fake nails, all that mess.

coloring the hair blond), it really is unrelated to Eurocentrism. Is this your stance?

Someone can straighten and treat their hair because they are so lazy and don't want to go through a hair care regime. And thats their only reason. So are they now 'white beauty loving sell outs?
The intention dictates the cause.
So stop labelling everyone as the same. We all have our own reasons for doing what we do, and WE know them.

I think the problem is that you're taking my comments as condemnation, when that's the last thing I'd do. Any comment I make in relation to Eurocentrism is in regard to its broad, inescapable impact its had on
MY people.
Just because someone pops a contact in their eye, or perms their hair does NOT mean their goal is to become a white woman. However, there are many influences which are both direct and indirect in our societal structure which tell our black women what is beautiful, and what is not.
The results of its impact is sometimes shown in very potent doses , and at other times in more minuscule amounts. Regardless of capacity, the effects can never be ignored or negated.

the thing is ... i love her how her hair look natural and since she claims it's all natural so i think i will be really disappointed if i find out it aint true.. ok now..i get sometimes she have extensions on but all her hair better not be a full and complete lacefront since she claims it's hers

I don't see any forced eurocentric standard of beauty element here. Unless the individual decides to take that on themselves, thats their bag.
Are you at all familiar with the impact of Eurocentrism on black women in America?
Yes. When it comes to things like hair and skin tone I would agree. In this instance, I don't see it.
It doesn't stop at hair and skin.
Have you ever heard of Lil Kim
For people who have issues with their beauty and are influenced by the eurocentric definition of it, then yes for them it doesn't stop at hair and skin tone.
But what I'm saying is in general, people who wear contacts, are doing it to be different, not white. Its an eye colour thing. Not a white beauty thing. As green and blue and grey eyes aren't exclusive to white people. Its just like make up and eye lashes and fake nails, all that mess.
So black women also perm/straighten their hair to be "different"? With your logic here, as long as it's not directly related to white people (e.g. coloring the hair blond), it really is unrelated to Eurocentrism.
Yes definitely weaves and that whole bag in general is related to the influence of white standards of beauty, i totally believe in its effects, I'm not arguing that it doesn't.
BUT AGAIN eye colour is not exclusive to any ONE race, so NO, there is a distinction here.
I think the problem is that you're taking my comments as condemnation, when that's the last thing I'd do. Any comment I make in relation to Eurocentrism is in regard to its broad, inescapable impact its had on MY people.
LOL im not disputing any of that.
All I'm saying is not when it comes to eye colour, i don't see the white beauty agenda influence thing. lol
And that's your opinion. You're welcome to it.
However, I'll stick to facts. And one fact is that black women are taught to believe that EVERYTHING about them is wrong and needs to be fixed in some way.

Maybe your disappointment is the very reason they wear them. Seems like you guys deem these women less attractive now that you know the truth
I can see Zu's point

Kenya's whole thing is her beauty. You don't see women walking around looking like Kenya Moore every day.
To find bits of pieces of this "beauty" she gives is not even hers naturally, I could see how it would be a bit disappointing. :dead:
But that's her hair. :justabit: She just adds extensions here and there sometimes.
Me pointing out her contacts wasn't CONDEMNING her to the pits of hell for being a sell out, like ZuZu tried to make it seem. :plzstop: :plzstop: I still live for Kenya. NEVER get it twisted.

Good logic but not applicable with me.
I stan for natural beauties.
I'm the last person you'll find worshipping 10 feet of weave installed in someone's head.
But I can see your point
They don't NEED 'em, but I don't think they rely on them either
I still stan for Kenya. Not one point in this thread did I say she was less pretty because of colored contact usage.
I expressed my disappointment in her being one of "those gorls" who run around with colored contacts in their eyes. There's a huge difference.

I think Kenya's eyes are naturally light brown, even if she does wear contacts now. They looked lighter in old pics

I was fooled by Kenya. Because she wears those same color contacts all the time. I had never seen her real eyes. Naomi changes the color from blue to green to brown. And at the beginning of her career she didn't have those contacts.

Colored contacts, for those who wear them, are no different than highlighting your hair etc.
The contacts on Kenya and Naomi actually look nice on them and slightly enhance their presence if that makes sense. Not their features..
They normally don't look nice on blacks because they don't "need" colorful eyes but they look nice on those 2..

Afro you're not able to discern a point or make a distinction. Most else in the thread got the point though so its cool lol, love u too u know that.
I get your point, loud and clear.
Your point is that light eyes are not an exclusively European feature. So someone putting colored contacts in does not make them a wanna white womuh.
But here's the reality --
most black people who have light eyes are of a significant admixture, usually
European admixture. Or simply inherited a recessive gene from our slave masters that had skipped generations and happened to land on them. It is also very rare to see.
HALF of Americans in the 20th century had blue eyes. And guess what, it wasn't mostly the blacks, Hispanics, or Native Americans walking around with them. It was not until interracial marriage became more acceptable that this began to change, as more
MELANIN creeped into everyone's genetic makeup.
However, the IMAGE of the blue eyed, blond haired woman as the "ideal" of beauty has not crept out of psyches just yet. How can it? We see it everywhere. If it's not the white woman herself, there is a black woman wearing blond hair on a poster board somewhere.
I can't speak for where you are, but a majority of people in this country with those colored eyes are WHITE. It's simple as day. :uhh: Melanin controls the skin color and eye color, which is why its RARE that you see any of us walking around with icy blue or green eyes. We are DRENCHED in melanin.
Thankfully. :supluv:
So this goes back to my point about EUROCENTRISM. Blacks who have green/blue eyes are usually highly admixed with EUROPEAN. Possibly half white, or maybe a quarter white. Not hispanic or Native blood. Do you get it now?
We don't bat an EYE in the states when we see a white person with green or blue eyes. It's expected. But on a black person it's like WOW. R u mixed :ohwow: where did it come from? :ohwow:

But that's exactly what you've been doing the entire time, and over something silly like contacts. None of our faves are natural from head to toe. They wear things to enhance what they've already got. I don't know why we're so quick to judge black women over the silliest things. Just because a woman isn't rocking her natural 100% all of the time doesn't mean there's some deep rooted issue or insecurity.

But I'm not going to get into some huge debate over some contacts, lol. I've honestly never paid attention to Kenya's.

I still stan for Kenya. Not one point in this thread did I say she was less pretty because of colored contact usage.
I expressed my disappointment in her being one of "those gorls" who run around with colored contacts in their eyes. There's a huge difference.
So any unrelated conclusions drawn are purely based on assumption.
But why is Kenya suddenly one of "those girls" because she wears colored contacts? :everythingok:
!!!
And I don't understand why he lumped her together with the rest of the "insecure" girls. I don't see anything wrong with temporary mess like eye and hair color. She's not bleaching her skin or lightening her instamess photos. She seems very secure with herself.
And I don't think it's nice to judge someone just because everything on them isn't natural. No need to be so dramatic.
Who's judging?
I just said I still stan for her.
And if anything needs judging , its this COUNTRY....first and foremost...not ANYONE in our community. Don't even get me started on that.
Literally taking the words out of my mouth.
Meh. It can either be a form of self expression or an extension of self hatred, all depends on the motive behind it. I don't think it makes anyone less worthy of admiration. Just let people do them.

Colored contacts, like any "enhancement" can be viewed as an underlying insecurity but not in Naomi and Kenya's case. That's like saying any woman who dyes their hair is automatically insecure..

You're "heartbroken" and "disappointed" because they wear colored contacts and automatically categorized them with other black women who've been brainwashed to do things to fit a certain standard of beauty. You don't even know the motive behind them wearing the contacts though so I'm not sure why you quoted Yummy. Then you debated w'/ Zu over some more mess.

Well Euro brainwashing of our community is a real thing so its perfectly logical to arrive at that conclusion. But how is their BRAINWASHING their own fault? This is where I am finding a problem with your word "judging". How can I comfortably judge a victim?
Disappointment and heartbreak aren't feelings which stem from judgement. At least in my case. But you keep finding a way to tie it to judgement, when I am TELLING you that I still love Kenya and Naomi regardless.
It's like you're forcing their disownment for the sake of your argument.

I put it along the line w/ colored wigs. Most people just love to dabble in different mess.
I never think of "trying to fit beauty standards! sellout!" when I see a person of color wearing contacts.
I agree to an extent, but when someone wears them practically 24/7 and then
tries to give the impression that they're real. That's when I see it as an issue.
Like, Kenya was on Wendy's radio show a while back and one of the guys
said he thought she wore contacts and she took offense.
It's like finding out Toni had been using a vocal enhancing tool for her entire career. Or that GHan has other people to do her harmonies. I'd definitely be heartbroken and disappointment because I would feel DECEIVED. Will I still pick up that alber though? :justabit: Of fucking course.
Cuz at the end of the day I still love what I see and hear overall. Regardless of how it arrives to that end product or result.
But who isn't a little hurt or disappointment when they feel like they've been tricked or deceived? Kenya certainly passes off those contacts as her own. She never goes around saying they're fake, or used for enhancements. But mess.

That's what you're not getting.
Sometimes these things can be so deeply embedded into our psyches that we really know not we do. That's why it is important not to judge anyone. Instead understand.
For some reason, these women think that lighter eyes -- green and blue -- are better. Are prettier. Does this mean they want to be Becky? I don't think so. Kenya will tell you in a minute that she is a chocolate princess. And I love that about her.
This is why I will never ATTACK her and say "you self hatin' bitch!" That makes no sense, because if even if she hates herself (which btw is something I NEVER accused her of) its nothing of her own fault. I would never look to the VICTIM. I'd look to the media, I'd look to our history in this country.
Why do you want me to judge her so badly?

I put it along the line w/ colored wigs. Most people just love to dabble in different mess.
I never think of "trying to fit beauty standards! sellout!" when I see a person of color wearing contacts.
I agree to an extent, but when someone wears them practically 24/7 and then
tries to give the impression that they're real. That's when I see it as an issue.
Like, Kenya was on Wendy's radio show a while back and one of the guys
said he thought she wore contacts and she took offense.
So she lied about wearing colored contacts. That makes her a liar I guess?
Does it mean she's subconsciously trying to look like Becky instead of Keisha?
No
That's what you're not getting.
Sometimes these things can be so deeply embedded into our psyches that we really know not we do.
f
That's why I said subconsciously.
Well the fact that you used that example shows that you know this mess is real and it exists.
So I don't see the point of the debate. :plzstop:

Now this I agree with.

I just don't think that's the case with every black woman not rocking her natural mess. You have a habit of doing that.
It's not about judging someone.
Have you guys NOT noticed that Kenya always brags about her NATURAL beauty?
Like....wtf? :dead: She touts herself as a naturally beautiful girl.
So one should only be disappointed to discover a part of this natural beauty is indeed not natural.
Should we bring in a rocket scientist to explain this further?

I'm sure some can say that its all simply "enhancements".....or "softening the hair"...or one of the many justifications I've seen..
but this is the problem. we're so trained to BRUSH mess under the rug and shut up about it. never look deeper into it. and when someone else does, they're doing entirely too much.
Kenya's body is def' unnatural. I thought it was known.
The contacts don't make her look any more beautiful than what she already is, they just give a different look. Bottom line: I'm not clapping for this thread, sorry luv.

I'm glad you clarified your own definition of an enhancement. But you cannot blame me for questioning what you said. Because this is the meaning of an enhancement:
Quotean increase or improvement in quality, value
So when I see straightened hair listed as an enhancement, it gives me a bit of :udontlookok: moment. But I see where you are coming from.

Maybe they just like that contacts AMPLIFIES their look a bit
No need to judge women for doing things that makes them feel comfortable. It doesn't mean they feel they're not good enough. Like don't you style your hair a certain way cause you like it? I don't see how this is any different. But mess.

But if that were the case she wouldn't straighten her hair or wear makeup. She does simple things to enhance her natural beauty..
My point is....She uses the term "natural" a LOT.
That's the difference between her and someone like Beyonce.
Beefasa will gladly PLOP that lion mane on ha head and get on stage and TWIRL it all around :dead:
leave and give not one fuck about it.
So when I find out that she wears light color contacts I don't even bat an eye.
it's Beefasa. I'm not gonna sit here and say I'm disappointed, or hurt. :kii: :kii: :kii: for what? she's not sitting around claiming to a natural BEAUTY QUEEN.
btw, since when is straightening of our natural hair an "enhancement"? What about straight hair is better, exactly? This all goes back to the problem I am talking about thru this thread. But mess. I don't wanna get back into it. :dead: :dead: :dead:
I never said "straight hair enhances beauty" but it can be used to enhance beauty to pull of a certain look. Same can be said for when a person curls their hair etc. Straight hair is not superior nor are colored eyes.
But I see where you are coming from.
bffb n
I'm actually glad you pointed that out though, thanks bvy.

The contacts don't make her look any more beautiful than what she already is, they just give a different look. Bottom line: I'm not clapping for this thread, sorry luv.

That's how I feel honestly.
Do men really care about that mess anyway? Things like eye & hair color seem so minuscule and silly to me, Nails & eyelashes too. I don't understand this arched eyebrow thing.
A nice bahvey >

Maybe they just like that contacts AMPLIFIES their look a bit
No need to judge women for doing things that makes them feel comfortable. It doesn't mean they feel they're not good enough. Like don't you style your hair a certain way cause you like it? I don't see how this is any different. But mess.

How is styling natural hair comparative to wearing colored contacts?
I'm drawing a blank. :dead:
And I don't really "style" my hair, cuz I don't like the way styling products dry out my hair.
a lot of gel, mousses, etc. i've learned less is more with my head.
the most I use of a styling product a PINCH of gel. Literally a dime size. and that's for my entire head. just for a bit of hold.
i'm not here for hard looking and feeling hair.
Everything else I do is focused on keeping it healthy. and moisturized. the conditioner and shampoo I use is paraben free, silicone free, etc. even my leave in is free of harmful chemicals. I pay more but I'd prefer health over a quick style any day. anything that could be harmful, including heat, I don't want it. Regardless of how cute it looks. but thats just me. Im not judging anyone else. I just realize that I only get one head of hair and I have to treat it right.
So I cannot comfortably compare hair care to throwing blue contacts in my eyes.
those cosmetic contacts do not promote eye health in any way.

I don't think its black trying to be white. Its more 'boring' brown eyed types wanting to be 'special' like those with coloured eyes. Asians, middle eastern, orientals etc all express the blue/green/grey eyes, not just white people.
I don't think it's intentionally trying to be white , either.
But it's definitely influenced by eurocentric standards of beauty that have been forced upon many of our african american sisters.
!!!! It's what black girls run around calling "pretty" :dead: anything but their own
Oooh he got "pretty eyes". n

judging that person
I LOVE Kenya and stan for her :uhh: :uhh:
why would I judge her?
Just like those black girls running around saying "ooooh ur hair so pretty!" "ur eyes so pretty!!!!"..are not to be judged either. its not their fault.
but theres no harm in acknowledging and discussing it.
just because someone chooses to do so doesn't mean they're being an asshole. they're being real.
